4 1.0 Purpose The purpose of this document is to safely guide all applicable personnel through the removal of the F/8 secondary mirror from the prime focus assembly of the 4 Meter Mayall Telescope. 2.0 Applicable To This procedure is applicable to the Facilities, EM, and Engineering departments, or any additional personnel who will assist in completing these tasks for the Mayall 4 Meter Telescope. 3.0 Scope This document is a step by step procedure that outlines how to complete the removal of the F/8 secondary mirror from the prime focus assembly. 4.0 Definitions The acronyms referenced in this procedure are listed below. 6 8.0 Procedure The following processes must be completed before the removal of the F/8 secondary from the 4M prime focus assembly can begin. 8.1 Ensure the telescope is at Zenith (JHA-1). 8.2 Remove the Cassegrain Instrument (JHA-1). Note: This step is performed by the Instrumentation Group. The removal procedures for this step will depend on if KOSMOS or NEWFIRM is on the instrument. Refer to the KOSMOS Removal Procedure (2100-AD ) and its corresponding JHA (2100-AD JHA), or refer to the NEWFIRM Removal Procedure (2100-AD ) and its corresponding JHA (2100-AD JHA). 8.3 If NEWFIRM was on the telescope, install the guider (JHA-1). 8.4 Install the K&E alignment telescope adapter on the Cass guider using the blue K&E mount and the white adapter plate (Figure 1) (JHA-1). Figure 1: K&E Alignment Scope Mounted 8.5 Balance the telescope (JHA-1). Note: Refer to the 4 Meter Balancing Telescope Procedure (2100-AD ). 8.6 Stage the F/8 dummy (Figure 2), F/8 cell and mirror removal fixture (Figure 3), F/8 mirror removal table (Figure 4), and the F/8 mirror box (Figure 5) on the Ground Floor (JHA-1) AD Docx Page 6 of 15

8 Figure 5: F/8 Mirror Box 8.7 Ensure the telescope is at prime focus, with the PF corrector facing the primary mirror (JHA-1). If it is not, perform a major flip so the F/8 is facing away from the primary mirror. Note: If Mosaic is installed, follow the Secondary Major Flip F/8 to Prime Focus Procedure (2100-AD ) and the corresponding JHA (2100-AD JHA). If Mosaic is not installed, follow the Secondary Major Flip F/8 to Prime Focus (No Instrument) Procedure (2100-AD ) and the corresponding JHA (2100-AD JHA). 8.8 Lockout the telescope (JHA-1). Note: Refer to the Lockout Tagout Standard Operating Policy (1000-AD ) and the Lockout Tagout Standard Operating Procedure (2100- AD ). 8.9 Ensure the SE annex stay bar is installed from the flip (JHA-1). Note: If it is not, install it Open the hatch (JHA-1). Note: Refer to the 4 Meter Main Floor Hatch Removal Procedure (2100-AD ) and the corresponding JHA (2100-AD JHA). After completing the above, the remaining processes are as follows Rig the F/8 mirror cover (Figure 6) (JHA-2) AD Docx Page 8 of 15
9 Figure 6: F/8 Mirror Cover Rigged for Removal 8.12 Remove the F/8 mirror cover and fly it down to the Ground Floor so that it can be taken away for long-term storage during the DESI project (Figure 7) (JHA-3). Figure 7: 4M F/8 Mirror Cover on Telescope 8.13 Lift the F/8 cell and mirror removal fixture to the Console Floor (Figure 3) (JHA-4). Place the spreader bar on a cart Use the depth micrometer tool to measure the tilt of the mirror cell relative to the prime focus cage (Figure 8) AD Docx Page 9 of 15
10 Figure 8: F/8 Depth Micrometer Tool 8.15 Verify the position of the match marks for rotation. Remove the previous marks if they are not suitable Remove the panel cover from the inside of the PF cage to access the translation screws (JHA-5). Back off two of the translation screws; record which screws and how much each was turned Disconnect the electrical wiring and all other services going between the F/8 cell and mirror, and the PFA (JHA-6) Rig the mirror removal fixture to the 3 ton jib crane (Figure 9) (JHA-7). 11 8.19 Connect the removal fixture to the F/8 mirror cell (Figures 10 and 11) (JHA-8). 13 8.23 Prepare the mirror for removal from the cell Lift the fixture and the cell/mirror assembly, and adjust the rigging so that the mirror is facing up (Figure 14) (JHA-12). Figure 14: F/8 Mirror and Cell Rotated so Mirror is Facing Up 8.25 Lift and install the F/8 dummy on the prime focus cage (JHA-13). Note: DO WE REALLY NEED TO INSTALL THE F8 DUMMY? 8.26 Close the hatches Remove the SE annex stay bar (JHA-14). Note: Refer to the 4M SE Annex Stay Bar Installation and Removal Procedure (2100-AD ) and the corresponding JHA (2100-AD JHA) Unlock the telescope. Note: Refer to the Lockout Tagout Standard Operating Policy (1000-AD ) and the Lockout Tagout Standard Operating Procedure (2100-AD ) Check the telescope balance Remove the mirror from the cell (JHA-15) Raise the mirror removal table to the upper limit Remove the three mirror removal plugs. Note: Refer to A Rest the mirror and cell on the removal table AD Docx Page 13 of 15
14 Ensure the mirror access ports are centered over the jacks Remove the mirror retainer. Note: Refer to D Cut the seal retaining cable and discard Remove the vacuum seal and save for a template. Note: Refer to C Lower the removal table and push the mirror out of the vacuum cell Use the 50 mirror band to move the mirror to a wash table Hand-wash the mirror Take Minolta measurements Open the F/8 Mirror Box and prepare it to receive the F/8 mirror Use the 50 mirror band to move the F/8 mirror to the F/8 mirror box, and package the mirror for long-term storage (JHA-16) Move the F/8 mirror box, with the mirror inside, to the Third Floor of the Mayall telescope for storage (JHA-17). There are not any processes that must be completed after the removal of the F/8 secondary from the 4M prime focus assembly. 9.0 Procedure Review This procedure must be reviewed by employees under the following terms: 9.1 Initially 9.2 When there is a change in the job process(es) 9.3 When there is a change in a worker s status, or job title 9.4 When governing authorities (such as OSHA) make changes 9.5 Every three years, at a minimum 2100-AD Docx Page 14 of 15
