8. Functional Description 8.1 Function of individual components 1. Entry slot: The image plate is inserted in the scanner through the entry slot and automatically inserted in the transport mechanism. 2. Yellow LED: LED lights: The scanner is switched on but not yet initialised. LED blinks: No connection to PC. Memory full. 3. On/Off button: To switch the appliance on or off hold the key down for 2 seconds. 4. Green LED: Scanner is ready for operation. 5. Erasure unit: After scanning any data on the image plate is automatically deleted in the erasure unit. 8. Image plates: The image plate serves as the exposure medium for X-rays and stores the image data. 9. Foil cassette / Foil sleeves: Prevents erasure of image data from the image plate and protects the image plate from damage. The image plate is inserted in the foil cassette. Together they are placed in the X-ray cartridge. The image plate is positioned together with the foil cassette at the entry slot of the transport drum and fed to the scanner. 10. Light shielding arc: The light shielding arc prevents the penetration of secondary light on the output gap of the transport drum and avoids that the image plates fall down after the scanning procedure. 6. Transport drum: The transport drum contains the complete transport mechanism, as well as the scanning unit and the erasure unit. 7. Status LED: The LEDs show if an image plate can be inserted for reading out. Green LED: An image plate can be inserted. Yellow LED: Do not insert an image plate yet. 2009/02/ /30 11

8.2 Description The scanner transfers the image data stored on the image plate into a digital image. X-ray: The image plate is exposed to X-radiation similar to an X-ray film. This happens in the corresponding foil cassettes. Image plate Reflection layer Reading out the image data The scanner is switched on by pressing the ON/OFF button (3). Then the read-out mode is activated by image processing software. The light protection cover with the image plate is then positioned at the entry slot (1) of the transport drum (6). If the status LEDs (7) are lighted in green, the image plate can be inserted in the entry slot (1). This can be done by pressing the thumb through the light protection cover and pushing or, for longer covers, by applying pressure to the end of the sleeve and in the direction of the transport drum. The image plate is then automatically drawn into the transport drum by the transport mechanism. Inside the transport drum the image plate passes through the scanner unit where the image data is scanned and then transmitted to the PC. A window on the monitor shows the progress of this procedure. Photomultiplier Laser source Parabolic mirror Prism Rotating disc Erasing the image data After the scanning procedure is completed the image plate passes to the erasure unit (5). Image data still held on the image plate will be erased. Finally the image plate leaves the transport drum and is fed to the exit slot. The image plate can now be prepared for the next X-ray exposure. Where the exposure dose was high (x-ray source of 300 KV or higher and all isotopes) the film will probably require subsequent erasure using a bright light source, the CR 35 Reset or the erasure unit in the transport case additionally. If used carefully, it is possible to reuse the image plates several hundred times. Before reuse, the image plates should be checked for signs of dirt or damage. Damaged image plates must not be reused / /02/25

Installation Only suitably qualified personnel are permitted to set up, to install or to operate the appliance Transport of the scanners Check that the delivery contents are complete and check for any signs of transport damage. 21 Usage 15. Using image plates 19 inactive side: active side: The scanner may only be operated in combination with image plates by Dürr NDT. The usage of other image plates must be authorised by Dürr NDT. Active side: The active side is white or light blue. Inactive side: The inactive side of the image plates is black. The manufacturer's instructions are printed on this side Working with image plates Image plates must be visibly checked for signs of damage. Damaged image plates (e.g. a torn outer layer, or visible scratches, which will affect the diagnostic assessment) must be replaced. Image plates are flexible like X-ray film. Do not bend or subject to pressure. Do not scratch or get dirty Storing image plates Store image plates in a dark place. Do not store in hot or moist conditions. Store the image plates in the corresponding foil cassette. If an image plate is stored for longer than 24 hours, then it should be erased again before the next X-ray exposure. Protect from direct sunlight and ultraviolet rays. If storing near the X-ray devices, the image plates must be protected against pre-exposure with X-radiation /02/ /30 21

Foil sleeve 16. Foil cassettes / foil sleeves / light protection covers Prevent image data on the image plate from being erased. Protect the image plates from dirt. The image plate is positioned together with the foil cassette at the entry slot of the transport drum and fed to the scanner. Using the foil cassette or light protection cover the image plate is fed into the scanner Foil cassette Light protection covers Foil cassette The foil cassette cannot be used in dirty areas. The inactive side of the image plate must still be visible after the plate is placed into the foil cassette. Foil sleeve When carrying out testing in damp or dirty conditions the flexible foil sleeve should be used. The image plate should be inserted into the foil sleeve and the sleeve closed. The closure to sleeve must be against the inactive side of the image plate. Light protection covers Protect the image plate from light and prevents erasure of the image data. Additionally, the light protection cover with its adhesive strips makes it easier to insert the image plate for scanning. Handling the light protection covers is explained in leaflet / / /02/25

17. X-ray 17.1 X-ray preparation With X-ray cartridge The x-ray cassette should be used where the image plate could be damaged mechanically during exposure. 24 Slide the erased image plate carefully into the foil cassette / foil sleeve and then place in the x-ray cassette. The active side of the image plate must point to the closed side of the X-ray cassette. Close the cover of the x-ray cassette. The closed side of the X-ray cartridge must point to the X-ray tube. Without X-ray cartridge Slide the erased image plate into the foil cassette. The black side of the image plate must be visible. or: Slide the erased image plate into the foil cassette and close. The closure to sleeve must be against the inactive side of the image plate. Place the foil cassette / foil sleeve on the object to be x-rayed. The active side of the image plate must face the X-ray tube /02/ /30 23

17.2 Image plate exposure Set exposure time and settings on the X-ray appliance. Expose the image plate Possible loss of image data: Image data on the image plate must be read by the scanner within 30 minutes of exposure! Reading out the image data Switch on the scanner. Call the X-ray module in the image processing software on the PC. Activate the scanner Select the required scanning mode. Status LEDs on the scanner must be lit green. 28 Foil pocket Open velcro fastening. Remove a small section of the image plate from the foil sleeve and fold back the flap. Lay the image plate with its foil sleeve onto the insert tray and carefully use both hands to slide the film into the transport drum. The image plate will now be taken up automatically into the scanner / /02/25

Foil cassettes Remove foil cassettes with image plates from the X-ray film cartridge and place in position at entry to tube of CR 35. Place the foil cassettes carefully into the correct position so that the foam section at the entry slot is flush with the transport drum. Slide the image plate with both hands into the transport drum; it will now be taken up automatically into the scanner. During read-out, the status LEDs on the entry slot are lighted in yellow. 30 Loss of image data: The foil cassettes may only be removed from the transport drum when all 4 status LEDs light green. The images will automatically be transmitted to the software. The progress of the read-out procedure is displayed in the preview window /02/ /30 25

17.4 Erasing the image data After scanning the cassette proceeds to erasure. Image data still held on the image plate will be erased. 33 Non-erased image data Where the exposure dose was high (x-ray source of 300 KV or higher and all isotopes) the film will require subsequent erasure using a bright light source, the CR 35 Reset or the erasure unit in the transport case. Calculating erasure time The erasure time will depend on the intensity of the light source. If image information on the image plate is to be erased completely in one second, then theoretically a light intensity of 2.4 million lux/sec is required. The minimum erasure time in seconds can be calculated by dividing 2.4 million by the actual intensity of the light source available in lux. Where the light intensity cannot be found in the documentation accompanying the light source, then this must be established using a Luxmeter. Typical light intensity of X-ray film equipment is ca lux. This would give an erasure time of ca. 2.4 m / = 120 s. The erasure time can be varied depending on the actual dosage used. Additional erasure of image data In order to establish whether unerased image data is still present on the image plate and additional erasure is necessary: Scan the image plate again. Analyse the X-ray exposure. If the counts visible in the scanned image exceed 600 then the image plate requires additional erasure / /02/25

Cleaning Only cleaning agents authorised by Dürr NDT must be used. Other cleaning preparations can damage the equipment. We recommend the application of DÜRR NDT IP-Cleaning Wipes, Order no.: CCB351A Image plates Dirt on either side should be cleaned off using a soft lint-free cloth. Any remaining dirt can be removed using DÜRR NDT IP-Cleaning Wipes; use a careful circular wiping motion. Before reuse, the image plate must be completely dry Foil cassettes Visible soil must be removed from the flexible foil cassettes before reusing them. Apply a careful circular wiping motion to remove dirt using DÜRR NDT IP-Cleaning Wipes.
