System Requirements A 64-bit Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 computer with at least 8 GB of RAM (16GB is better). Installation and Troubleshooting Installation Run Setup Lucis Pro Win 6.2 SA.exe to install Windows 64-bit Lucis Pro 6. This will install the program executable and the built-in Lucis Art settings file. When the first preset is saved, the first user preset file is created and saved. These will be explained in a later section. Backup It is important to back up your software and serial number on a storage device that is separate from your computer, in case you need to reinstall the software. Your user-defined presets are saved in a file that you should back up: LucisSA.user.xml. Please note that if you uninstall Lucis, your User preset files are also uninstalled as is the builtin Lucis Art preset file: LucisSA.builtin.xml. Lucis Preset Files are usually stored here: Windows 10: (C:)\Users\<username>\Documents/LucisSA Windows 8.1: C:\Users\<username>\ Documents\LucisSA Windows 7: C:\Users\<username>\ AppData\ Local \Lucis Pro SA Lucis Processing Overview Images often contain hundreds or thousands of contrast levels. Our eyes can only differentiate 32 levels of contrast. Therefore, fine contrast variations are only partially recognized as textures our eyes can't resolve. Lucis enhances the image contrast variations that you choose and would like to view. Lucis compares each pixel to every other pixel along hundreds of radial lines in two directions to map out contrast variances. Consequently, Lucis is very computationally intensive and uses a lot of RAM. Then you can use the Enhance Detail slider and the Smooth Detail slider to select the range of contrast variances you wish to view. Contrast variances within the selected range are enhanced, and contrast variances outside the range are diminished. The relative emphasis of contrast information is shifted, but information is not thrown away. Lucis easily and accurately reveals detail that other image-processing methods can t produce. The Enhance and Smooth Detail sliders are two of the most powerful tools available for enhancing image detail and image information. Typically, it is best to find the optimum Enhance and Smooth Detail slider values before proceeding with using the other Lucis Pro features. For most scientific applications, the Enhance Detail slider is the only feature needed because the primary interest is to accurately enhance image detail Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 4

Single Channel mode versus Split Channel mode The Lucis algorithm modifies image intensity information. Grayscale images are processed perfectly. For color images, how the image is processed in terms of color shifts depends on whether you are in Single Channel mode or Split Channel mode. Many times, any color shifts are welcome. They are a desired part of the processing. However, the software does have the Assign Original Image Color slider that allows you to diminish or remove any color shifts. You can also diminish color shifts by using the Mix with Original Image slider. In Single Channel mode, Lucis converts the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) information to HSL (Hue, Saturation, Luminance). Lucis processes the Luminance information, and then combines the new Luminance (L') with the unaltered Hue and Saturation. The HSL' information is converted back to RGB. Therefore, some color images will experience color shifts as Lucis extracts the image detail. This typically occurs in patches of the image, such as orange and gray areas in shadows or brighter patches of blue or red. These color shifts are easily corrected using the Assign Original Image Color slider. With Split Channel mode you can select and individually enhance the intensity information in each color channel separately. So dramatic color shifts can result. Split Channel mode only applies to gray scale and color images. Split channels cannot be used on 16-bit gray scale images. For scientific and medical applications Split Channel mode is useful for images with data sets in individual color channels, such as fluorescence microscopy images. In photography and artistic applications, Split Channel mode is very powerful and can be used in a variety of ways. For example, a photograph may have most of the intensity information in one color channel that is centered on an object that you wish to make more powerful. Slightly enhancing that channel more than the other two will make the object pop off the page. Or you can enhance each channel differently to achieve a variety of color and detail shifts in the image. Another method is to drastically shift the intensity levels in each channel, and then use the Assign Original Image Color slider to remove the color shifts, leaving you with just the overall intensity shifts. There are many ways to use Lucis Pro in photography and artistic applications. Please visit the Usage Tips web page at to learn more. There, you can find more images and processed results of a variety of photos and images Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 5

Getting Started To open Lucis Pro, simply double click on the Lucis icon which will be on your desktop if selected at installation. This will bring up the program s User Interface (UI) as shown in Figure 1 below. Figure 1: User Interface (UI). Then load an image into Lucis Pro SA as seen in Figure 2. Figure 2: UI with a loaded image Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 6

Lucis Pro operates in either single channel mode or split channel mode. When the program initially starts, it is in single channel mode. This mode is handy for simple and quick enhancement of details in an image. Split channel mode is much more powerful for processing color images and for colorizing grayscale images. This will be discussed later. Use File/Open dropdown to load an image file. Lucis Pro SA supports 8- and 16-bit image files. The following file formats can be loaded and saved: TIF JPEG BMP PNG As stated earlier, Lucis Pro SA starts in single channel mode. Before an image file is loaded, all the variables areas are disabled (grayed-out). When you first load an image file, these areas will become enabled. The Enhance Detail slider value will show a number that indicates how many intensity levels there are in the image. This also indicates the quality of exposure. For a perfectly exposed 8-bit image, the value will be 257. For a 16-bit file the value will be Values less than this indicates that the image is underexposed. 8 1. Enhance Detail. Move this slider to the left to increasingly reveal image detail/features. When the image is first opened, the value is always the number of intensity variations in the image (the highest intensity minus the lowest intensity), rounded to make it odd. For 8-bit images the maximum value is 257. For 16-bit images the maximum value is 65, Smooth Detail. Move the Smooth Detail slider to the right to increasingly smooth image detail/features. When the image is first opened, the Smooth Detail slider value is always 1. When the Smooth Detail slider equals 1 there is no image smoothing. The slider value is displayed at the right end of the slider. Slider values must be an odd number. The value of the Enhance Detail slider must be higher than the Smooth Detail slider value. You can change slider values by moving the sliders or typing-in values. 3. Application Bar. The version of Lucis you have and the location of the opened image. 4. Scan Lines. Lucis maps out contrast variations. Each pixel is compared to every other pixel along Scan Lines. Enter the number of Scan Lines here (99 maximum). If the image is smoothed a great deal then artifacts can occur. Increase the value to remove any radial image artifacts. Decrease the value to create radial artifacts in the image which produces an interesting artistic effect. 5. Mix with Original Image. Use this slider to mix the processed image with a percentage of the original image. 6. Assign Original Image Color. Lucis processing may brighten or shift colors in patches of the image. Use this slider to assign all or a percentage of the colors of the original image to the Lucis-processed image. 7. Split Channels. By checking the Split Channels box, you change from Single Channel mode to Split Channel mode. In Split Channel mode, each color channel can be selected and enhanced separately. Split Channel mode works for color and gray scale images. Display Composite Image. This control is enabled in Split Channel mode only. When checked, the Preview Window displays the full, Lucis-processed image with all color channels. Unchecked, the Preview Window displays only the selected color channel as a grayscale image. Weight. This column controls the amount of the channel s data that is included in the processed image, from 0% (channel is disabled) to 100% (channel is fully visible). 8. Preview. When checked, the Preview Window displays the image as it will appear after Lucis processing. Uncheck this box to view the original image. 9. Tie Together. Check this box to keep the difference between the Smooth Detail slider value and the Enhance Detail slider value constant. When you move one slider, the other slider moves by the same amount. 10. Preset Controls. Use Load Preset to change the Lucis parameters to one of the LucisArt 3 settings or a saved, user-defined preset. Save New saves the current settings as a new preset. Manage allows you to delete, rename and reorder user-defined presets. 11. Process Revert Close Process activates the Lucis processing. The Lucis processed image opens in its own window. Revert changes the Lucis settings to their default values. Close exits Lucis. 12. Zoom. When opened, the image is scaled to fit in the Preview Window. Use + and to change the zoom value up or down by 10% of the zoom value or type in a value. 13. File Edit Windows Help File pull down menu has Open, Open Recent, Save User Preset File, Save Preset As, Load User Preset, Batch Processing and Exit. Edit pull down menu has Copy Processed Image to Clipboard (as 8-bit only), Paste Image from Clipboard, Zoom In and Zoom Out. If you have copied your Lucisprocessed image to the clipboard, you can use Paste Image from Clipboard to open the Lucis-processed image in Lucis. This easily allows you to process the image a second time. Windows pull down menu has Show/Hide Original Image and Show/Hide Processed Image. If you select Show Original Image then the original image appears in its own window. Help pull down menu has About, which provides the version of Lucis Pro and your registration information (name, , and serial number) Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 8

Zoom In and Out The UI includes a Zoom + and Zoom -. These controls work with Windows Ctrl + and Ctrl -. They change the image Zoom by 10% each time, increasing or decreasing the image size in the preview window. The user can also enter zoom values between 10% and 300%. Just typein the new value in the Zoom box and press Enter. Using the Enhance Detail and Smooth Detail Sliders Using the Enhance Detail Slider in Single Channel Mode When the image is first opened, the Enhance Detail slider value equals the range of intensity values in the image (the highest intensity minus the lowest intensity), rounded to make it an odd number. The Enhance Detail slider value can be changed in two ways: By moving the slider thumb left or right, or By changing the value in the text box to the right of the slider. Moving the Enhance Detail slider to the left enhances image detail. Figure 4: Original (unprocessed) image. Figure 5: Enhance Detail slider = 43, Smooth Detail slider = Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 9

Using the Smooth Detail Slider When the image is first opened, the Smooth Detail slider value is always 1. The Smooth Detail slider value can be changed in two ways the same as the Enhance Detail values can be changed: Figure 6: Original (unprocessed) image. Figure 7: Enhance Detail slider = 249, Smooth Detail slider = 39. By moving the slider thumb right or left, or By changing the value in the text box to the right of the slider Moving the Smooth Detail slider to the right will smooth the image detail. Be careful to not smooth too much or the image will lose all detail unless that is what you want. Using Both Sliders By moving the Smooth Detail slider to the right and the Enhance Detail slider to the left, you are diminishing the smallest image detail and the largest image features. This enhances midrange contrast patterns in the image Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 10

Figure 8: Unprocessed image (preview box unchecked) Figure 9: Enhance Detail slider = 91, Smooth Detail slider = 39. Optimum Values for Sliders Moving the Enhance Detail slider and observing the changes to the image will help you get familiar with how detail is revealed. This, plus the Assign Original Image Color slider (when processing color images), is all you need to enhance images for most scientific image processing applications. Experiment with moving the Smooth Detail slider and observe how the detail is smoothed. If you are both enhancing and smoothing the image and you think that you are close to what you want, the slider values can be tied together (see Tie Together, Page 16) to make it easier to adjust the image processing. Split Channel Mode Using the Enhance Detail Slider In Split Channel mode you can select each of the color channels and enhance them separately. The Enhance Detail and Smooth Detail sliders will process the intensity information in the selected color channel only Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 11

Below is the Single Channel mode image of a fish (8-bits per channel). The Enhance Detail slider value is 187, which means that the range of intensity values in the image is 187 out of a possible 257. This image is underexposed because of the way water disperses light and has Figure 10: Original (unprocessed) image in Single Channel Mode. reduced red information. If scuba diving, and depending on the camera that is used, this can be noticeable or objectionable. Lucis can easily clear this up. Now, if the image in single channel mode is Enhanced at 93, this yields Figure 11. Figure 11: Improvement using Enhance Detail slider = Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 12

Figure 12 below shows the same image with Split Channel mode selected, without any Lucis processing. You can see that the maximum Enhance Detail sliders for the Red, Green, and Blue channels are 207, 167, and 183 respectively. Since these slider values equal the intensity range in each channel, this indicates that the image is underexposed, especially in the Green channel. Red Figure 12: Original Image opened in Split Channel mode. Whenever an image is opened in Split Channel mode, the intensity values in each channel are stretched to use the entire range of intensity values. So, just by opening the image in Split Channel mode, Lucis has improved the image by enhancing the low-contrast channels. Figure 13 shows the image after the Red channel is selected, and the Display Composite Image check box is unchecked. This displays just the intensity information in the red channel Figure 13: Red Channel only, unprocessed. Figure 14: Red Channel Enhance Detail slider = Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 13

as a grayscale image. Then Figure 14 shows the effect of moving the Enhance Detail slider to the left, causing the intensity information in the Red channel to be enhanced. Figure 15 shows the intensity information in the Green channel. Figure 16 shows the effect of moving the Enhance Detail slider to 93, causing the intensity information in the Green channel to be enhanced. Figure 15: Green channel only. Figure 16: Green channel Enhance Detail slider = 93. Figure 17 shows the intensity information in the Blue channel. Figure 18 on the right shows the effect of moving the Enhance Detail slider to 93, causing the intensity information in the Blue channel to be enhanced, in this case by the same amount as the Red and Green channels. Figure 17: Blue channel only, un-processed. Figure 18: Blue channel Enhance Detail slider = Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 14

Figure 19 shows the effect of checking the Display Composite Image box. This is a preview of the image that would result from fully processing the image with the slider settings selected for each color channel. Figure 19: Composite image, each channel processed with the Enhance Detail slider = 93. Using the Smooth Detail Slider The identical process using the Smooth Detail slider could be used to smooth the intensity information in each channel. In addition to smoothing image detail, this process frequently results in dramatic color shifts. Therefore, this process is primarily used for creating artistic effects Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 15

Figure 20: Original image (Preview box unchecked) Figure 21: Smooth Detail slider = 71. Using Both Sliders Using both sliders can yield interesting results for artistic applications. Moving the Smooth Detail slider to a value of 3 to 9 can remove noise from an image that has the detail enhanced. The figures below show the original image and the image enhanced using both sliders. Figure 22: Original image (Preview box unchecked). Figure 23: Enhance Detail slider = 45, Smooth Detail slider = Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 16

Tie Together The Tie Together feature allows you to set a fixed difference between the values of the Enhance Detail and Smooth Detail sliders. Tie Together makes it easy to explore the many possibilities your image holds for artistic transformation. When Tie Together is checked, moving one slider causes the other slider to move by the same amount. In Figure 24, the difference between the two slider values has been set to 20. So, when the Enhance Detail slider is 243, the Smooth Detail slider is 223. Figure 24: Artistic effect using Tie Together By checking Tie Together and moving one slider, you can view all the possible image variations up and down the slider scale that result from the difference between the two slider values being equal to 20. Scan Lines For the most part, Lucis users leave the Scan Lines value alone. Below is a description of how Scan Lines work and how you might want to change them. Lucis operates by determining relative intensities, the intensity variations between pixels. When measuring the intensity differences between pixels, Lucis compares each pixel to every other pixel along hundreds of radial lines called scan lines. Lucis Pro has a default value of 32 for Scan Lines. This value is multiplied by 8 during processing, so this results in the algorithm processing pixel contrast variations along 256 scan lines Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 17

Because pixels are a finite size and the number of scan lines is not infinite, you can sometimes see radial artifacts in the image depending on the Lucis processing parameters chosen. Increasing the number of scan lines will frequently eliminate these radial artifacts if they are observed and are not wanted. Note that the greater the number of Scan Lines, the more computationally intensive the image processing and the longer it will take. This default value for Scan Lines is high enough to eliminate any visible radial artifacts in the image for most images. If you reduce the number of Scan Lines, this will start to create radial artifacts. Setting the Scan Lines to 1-3 creates the most dramatic effect. It can add interesting texture to the image. Please visit the Usage Tips page at for more information. Figure 25: Processed image with deliberate radial artifacts. Enhance Detail slider = 97, Smooth Detail slider = 87, 4 Scan Lines. The Shadow Artifact This type of artifact only occurs around discontinuities in the image (abrupt changes in intensity) and usually when applying the more extreme Lucis slider settings. For most images the contrasts vary enough that this artifact is not observable, or only affects a small part of the image. Figure 26 shows the shadowing artifact that, when it occurs, can t be removed by changing Lucis parameters Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 18

Figure 26: Lucis image with the Scan Lines increased to 40. Enhance Detail = 63. This image has several discontinuities. There are abrupt edges between the building and the sky. This shadow artifact is a result of the relative nature of the Lucis processing. To map out contrast variances, each pixel is being compared to every other pixel along hundreds of radial lines in two directions. Consequently, a blue pixel from the sky that is near a dark part of the roof is relatively brighter than a blue pixel out in the middle of the sky surrounded by similar blue pixels. Thus, the pixels near the dark part of the roof are brightened, creating a bright shadow. Similarly, a blue pixel from the sky that is near a bright part of the roof or a railing is relatively darker than a blue pixel out in the middle of the sky surrounded by similar blue pixels. Therefore, the pixels near the bright part of the roof and railing are darkened, creating a dark shadow. Mix with Original Image Slider The Mix With Original Image slider lets you mix the processed image with a percentage of the original image. The percentages can be adjusted to control the proportions of the original and processed image that are mixed to create the final image. Figure 27 shows the original image. Figure 28 shows the same image where the detail is overly enhanced using the Enhance Detail slider. Then, the result of mixing 25% of the Lucis image with 75% of the original image is shown in Figure Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 19

Figure 27: Original image. Figure 28: Over-enhanced image. Enhance Detail slider = 27. Figure 29: Mixed image: 25% Lucis image with 75% of the original image Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 20

Assign Original Image Color slider The Lucis algorithm modifies image intensity information. Grayscale images are processed perfectly. For color images, there can be color shifts. The Assign Original Image Color slider allows the assignment of all or a percentage of the original image s color to the processed image. This is especially important for skin tones. Figure 30 is an un-processed image. Figure 31 shows the same image with the detail enhanced using the Enhance Detail slider. There are some areas with red tones in the eyelid. This processed image has some patches of red color shifts in the skin tones (look at the eyelid at the lower left corner.) Figure 30: Original image. Figure 31: Enhanced image Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 21

Figure 32 is the same image as Figure 31 except the Assign Original Image Color slider has been moved to the 100% Original position. This assigns the original image s colors to the processed image and removes the color shifts caused by the Lucis processing. Figure 32: Processed image, color corrected using the Assign Original Image Color slider. Enhance: 71, Smooth: 1, Color Assigned 100% Display Composite Image The Display Composite Image check box is available only in Split Channel mode. When the Display Composite Image check box is checked (the default condition), the Preview window shows the result of the Lucis processing on all color channels. Uncheck the Display Composite Image box to view only the selected color channel as a grayscale image, as shown below in Figure 33. Figure 33: Display Composite Image box Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 22

Channel Weight When in Split Channel Mode one can alter the amount that each channel will be weighed (counted) towards the composite Lucis-processed image by altering the weight number associated with each channel. Click on the Weight column and the value can be altered from 0% (the channel is disabled) to 100% (the color channel is fully enabled and counted when calculating the composite image). The effect of altering the channel weight is shown in the Preview Window. This feature is useful for Fluorescence Microscopy and for developing new artistic effects. User-Defined Presets The User-Defined Presets feature provides the ability to save and apply any number of userdefined presets. While Lucis Pro SA processes each image differently because it uniquely reacts to an image s relative contrasts, with User-Defined presets you can save and apply prior settings that you liked and then make any adjustments from that point if desirable. Then the altered preset can be added to the User-Defined presets and Saved As a preset file at any location. This feature is easy to use. When you have the processed image settings you would like, click the Save New button and enter your Preset Name in the dialog, as shown in Figure 34. The preset names can be a simple descriptive name for example Moth or a more explanitory one as shown that includes the slider values (e.g, Moth 43 1). Click on Load Preset to get the dialog box shown in Figure 35. Select a Preset and click on Apply. You have access to the presets that you have saved, as well as the built-in presets provided at installation. Figure 34: Assign a name to User-Defined Preset. Click OK to save this defined preset. In this example, the numbers in the name are the Enhance Detail slider value first, followed by the Smooth Detail slider value. However, this order and format is a user preference. Figure 35: Loading Presets Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 23

To view and manage the presets that you have available, click the Manage button. A window opens which shows your stored presets. You can rearrange them, delete them and move them up and down the list. For some users, it can be very convenient to have multiple user preset files. This is especially useful if different types of images are being processed, such as landscapes, portraits, still life, colorize gray scale, SEM, TEM, scanned prints restoration, and so forth. To do this, simply create a group of presets and use File Save User Preset File As and give it a recognizable file name. As explained earlier, your presets are saved in a file that you should back up: LucisSA.user.xml. Note that if you uninstall Lucis, the built-in presets file is uninstalled but not your user preset file(s). Use the File Save Presets to save your presets file before uninstalling Lucis. When Lucis is reinstalled, the built-in presets are also reinstalled. Use File Load Presets to recover your previous user-defined presets. Save As Feature After you have processed a source image file, the results will be displayed in a separate window as shown below in Figure 36. In this case, you can click on the File Save As option to save the processed image at any desired location. Figure 36: Save As feature Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 24

Furthermore, Save As allows for saving your processed file in any of the Lucis Pro supported file formats. Additionally, saving as a JPEG format file allows the user to select different levels of compression (image quality) as shown in Figure 37 below. Figure 37: Setting JPEG quality User-defined Preset Manager Your presets can be saved and loaded using the File Save presets and the Load Presets. Figure 38: User Defined Preset Manager Lucis Preset File Locations: Windows 10: (C:)\Users\<username>\Documents/LucisSA Windows 8.1: C:\Users\<username>\ Documents\LucisSA Windows 7: C:\Users\<username>\ AppData\ Local \Lucis Pro SA These are the default locations for the preset files, however, User Presets can be saved to and retrieved from any previously used location or locations Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 25

Built-In Presets Lucis Pro SA includes a built-in preset file which is installed the first time and every time that the program is installed or re-installed. This set of presets on the left side duplicates the Windows Lucis Art 3 Photoshop plug-in values for the special effects of Sculpture and Plaid. This preset file is named LucisSA.default.xml which is in the same folder as the User Presets file. Just load a built-in preset. Then move one slider to get the range of effects that were available with LucisArt 3. Batch Processing LucisPro SA features a robust batch processing option that will automatically apply a specific user-defined or default preset to many image files in a folder. These files must be in the same folder (directory/sub-directory). When Batch Processing is selected, you will be prompted to select a Preset either from the Built-in Presets or one of your User Presets as shown in Figure 40. The Lucis Art values are discussed in the Downloads section at lucispro.com. Figure 40: Prompt to load a Batch Preset The Batch Process operation is as follows: Start SA File/Batch Select preset Select source folder Press Batch Processing button Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 26

Then the program processes each file, displaying a progress bar for each, and text like "Processing file 3 of 10: xyz.jpg" A text box shows a running account of everything that happens (basically, a mini log): Processing files in folder blah/blah using preset MyPreset (for example) Processing file file1.jpg... success; file saved Processing file file2.png... success; file saved Processing file file3.tif... success; file saved Processing file file4.bmp... success; file saved... All files processed are saved in <folder>/<folder>/<folder>/lucisresults-mypreset The log file can be saved to any location using the Batch Processing Save log to file option. By default, Lucis Pro SA will always save JPEG images at quality 90 in Batch Mode, however, any value can be selected when using Save As for individual JPEG files. Depending on the file size of your images, be sure to allow enough disk space to accommodate the source files and the processed files, especially when saving as TIF (lossless). Using post-processing tools, you can change the quality and characteristics of individual files after Lucis Batch processing. There is no limit on the number of images that can be processed using Batch Mode other than your available disk space capacity, and the processing time of your CPU and main RAM memory. If you have a mix of 8-bit and 16-bit image files, running the Batch Mode will process the files according to the selected Preset: A single channel preset for 8-bit images will operate as such on these image files. When applied to a RGB 16-bit image file, Lucis Pro multiplies the Single Channel preset values by 256 to accommodate the increased dynamic range of 16-bit images. If a Single Channel preset is selected, the images will be processed as gray scale with the associated preset values applied to the files but only if the original image is grayscale. If a Split Channel preset is selected, the images will be processed as RGB with all preset values applied to all image files. However, 16-bit gray scale image files cannot be processed with Split Channel presets Lucis Pro 6 SA Windows Page 27
