Photoshop 3 Masks Creating a Clipping Mask A Clipping Mask uses the data in one layer to mask the other layer. Creating a Layer Mask from a Selection A Layer Mask can use a selection to mask a layer. Create or load a selection using any of the selection techniques shown earlier. Make sure the layer to be masked is not a Background Layer. The mask shape (star) should be on the lower layer. Hover the cursor between the two layers. Hold down the option key. The cursor changes to a 2-circle icon as shown. Click once and the top layer is masked by the bottom layer. Creating a Layer Mask A Layer Mask hides a layer s pixels based on a grayscale image attached to it. Click on the Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers Panel to convert the selection to a Layer Mask. Select a layer and click on the Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers Panel. Painting with black hides the image pixels. Painting with white reverses this effect by revealing pixels. Painting with any shade of gray crates a semi-transparent effect. With the Layer Mask selected, painting with white adds to the mask. Painting with black subtracts from the mask. Painting with gray creates a semi-transparent effect. Helpful Key Commands Hide Layer Mask shift-click the Layer Mask. Click again to reverse. Show only Layer Mask option-click the Layer Mask. Click again to reverse. Separate layer from Layer Mask Click on the lock icon between the layer and Mask.

Photoshop 3 Smart Objects Layers Panel Vector Smart Object Copy and paste a vector object from Illustrator into Photoshop and it becomes a Vector Smart Object. Double-click the layer icon to edit the Object in Illustrator. Convert a layer to a Smart Object Select a layer and choose Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object. You can also choose the Layers Panel Menu as shown. Adjustment Layer Double-click to change the adjustment settings. There is a mask icon to the right of the Adjustment icon for localizing the adjustment. Smart Object Smart Objects contain a icon on their layer icon. Double-click the icon to edit the Smart Object. Smart Filters Filters applied to a Smart Object layer are nested in the layer as Smart Filters. These filters can be hidden and edited at any time. Adjustment Layer Click to create an Adjustment Layer
Photoshop 3 Filters Filter Gallery Many of the filters available are contained in the Filter Gallery. Multiple filters can be selected to create unique effects. Choose Filter > Filter Gallery. Filter Gallery Filters are grouped according to type. Click on an icon to activate the filter. Settings Settings for the selected filter. All filters are available in the drop-down menu at the top. Filter Gallery Layers Multiple filters can be arranged in layers. Layers can be rearranged and create different effects depending on layer order. Layers can be hidden by clicking the eye icon. Create Filter Layer Delete Filter Layer Fade After applying a filter, you can choose Edit > Fade to reduce the intensity of the effect. Blending modes are also available to change the way the filter blends with the original image. Consider choosing Fade after applying any filter as a way to potentially refine the effect beyond the standard filter settings.
Photoshop 3 Filters Filters not part of the Filter Gallery. Blur Filters Average Finds the average color of an image or selection, and then fills the image or selection with the color to create a smooth look. Blur and Blur More Eliminate noise where significant color transitions occur in an image. Box Blur Blurs an image based on the average color value of neighboring pixels. Gaussian Blur Quickly blurs a selection by an adjustable amount. Lens Blur Adds blur to an image to give the effect of a narrower depth of field so that some objects in the image stay in focus and others areas are blurred. Motion Blur The filter s effect is analogous to taking a picture of a moving object with a fixed exposure time. Radial Blur Simulates the blur of a zooming or rotating camera to produce a soft blur. Shape Blur Uses the specified kernel shape to create the blur. Smart Blur Blurs an image with precision. Surface Blur Blurs an image while preserving edges. Distort Filters Displace Uses an image, called a displacement map, to determine how to distort a selection. Lens Correction The Lens Correction filter fixes common lens flaws such as barrel and pincushion distortion, vignetting, and chromatic aberration. Pinch Squeezes a selection. Polar Coordinates You can use this filter to create a cylinder anamorphosis, in which the distorted image appears normal when viewed in a mirrored cylinder. Ripple Creates an undulating pattern on a selection, like ripples on the surface of a pond. Spherize Gives objects a 3D effect by wrapping a selection around a spherical shape. Twirl Rotates a selection more sharply in the center than at the edges. Specifying an angle produces a twirl pattern. Wave Works much as the Ripple filter does, but with greater control. ZigZag Distorts a selection radially, depending on the radius of the pixels in your selection. Noise Filters Add Noise Applies random pixels to an image, simulating the effect of shooting pictures on high-speed film. Despeckle Detects the edges in an image (areas where significant color changes occur) and blurs all of the selection except those edges. Dust & Scratches Reduces noise by changing dissimilar pixels. Median Reduces noise in an image by blending the brightness of pixels within a selection. Reduce Noise Reduces noise while preserving edges based on user settings affecting the overall image or individual channels. Pixelate Filters Color Halftone Simulates the effect of using an enlarged halftone screen on each channel of the image. Crystallize Clumps pixels into a solid color in a polygon shape. Facet Clumps pixels of solid or similar colors into blocks of likecolored pixels. Fragment Creates four copies of the pixels in the selection, averages them, and offsets them from each other. Mezzotint Converts an image to a random pattern of black-and-white areas or of fully saturated colors in a color image. Mosaic Clumps pixels into square blocks. Pointillize Breaks up the color in an image into randomly placed dots, as in a pointillist painting. Render Filters Clouds Generates a soft cloud pattern using random values that vary between the foreground and the background colors. Difference Clouds Uses randomly generated values that vary between the foreground and background color to produce a cloud pattern. Fibers Creates the look of woven fibers using the foreground and background colors. Lens Flare Simulates the refraction caused by shining a bright light into a camera lens. Lighting Effects Lets you produce myriad lighting effects on RGB images by varying 17 light styles, three light types, and four sets of light properties. Sharpen Filters Sharpen and Sharpen More Focus a selection and improve its clarity. Sharpen Edges and Unsharp Mask Find the areas in the image where significant color changes occur and sharpen them. Smart Sharpen Sharpens an image by letting you set the sharpening algorithm or control the amount of sharpening that occurs in shadows and highlights. Stylize Filters Diffuse Shuffles pixels in a selection to soften focus according to the selected option. Emboss Makes a selection appear raised or stamped by converting its fill color to gray and tracing the edges with the original fill color. Extrude Gives a 3D texture to a selection or layer. Glowing Edges Identifies the edges of color and adds a neonlike glow to them. Tiles Breaks up an image into a series of tiles, creating an offset between the selection and its original position. Y Trace Contour Finds the transitions of major brightness areas and thinly outlines them for each color channel, for an effect similar to the lines in a contour map. Wind Places tiny horizontal lines in the image to create a windblown effect. Texture Filters Craquelure Paints an image onto a high-relief plaster surface, producing a fine network of cracks that follow the contours of the image. Grain Adds texture to an image by simulating different kinds of grain. Mosaic Tiles Renders the image so that it appears to be made up of small chips or tiles and adds grout between the tiles. Patchwork Breaks up an image into squares filled with the predominant color in that area of the image. Stained Glass Repaints an image as single-colored adjacent cells outlined in the foreground color. Texturizer Applies a texture you select or create to an image. Video Filters De-Interlace Smooths moving images captured on video by removing either the odd or even interlaced lines in a video image. NTSC Colors Restricts the gamut of colors to those acceptable for television reproduction, to prevent oversaturated colors from bleeding across television scan lines. Other Filters Custom Lets you design your own filter effect. High Pass Retains edge details in the specified radius where sharp color transitions occur and suppresses the rest of the image. Maximum and Minimum The Maximum filter has the effect of applying a choke spreading out white areas and choking in black areas. The Minimum filter has the effect of applying a spread spreading out black areas and shrinking white areas.
Photoshop 3 Paths Paths Panel Saved Path Double-click a path to name it and save it. White area of the icon shows the inner area of the path. Work Path A temporary path. Newly drawn paths overwrite the previous Work Path. Fill Path with Foreground Color Fills the path with color on selected Layer. Paths Tips Trace images in Photoshop and export them as Illustrator files. Select File > Export > Paths to Illustrator. Command-click on a Path in the Paths Panel to activate it as a Selection. Hold down Command and shift and click on a Path to add it to an existing Selection. Hold down Command and option and click on a Path to subtract it from an existing selection. Stroke Path with Brush Takes the currently visible Brush Tool (Paint Brush or Pencil) and creates a Stroke according to the diameter of the Brush. Load Path as Selection Creates an active Selection from the chosen Path. Make Work Path from Selection Converts active Selection to a Work Path. Clipping Path For use in layout software. Creates a silhouette effect, masking the image when placed in InDesign, Quark XPress or Illustrator. Vector Masks In addition to a traditional Layer Mask, you can also use a Path to create a Vector Mask. Vector Masks are editable with the black and white arrows and produce a sharp, clean edge. Both Layer Masks and Vector Masks can be combined on the same layer. Vector Mask Click the Mask icon at the bottom of the Layer Panel two times to create a Vector Mask. The first click creates a traditional Layer Mask and the second click adds a Vector Mask to the layer. The original Path is dupicated in the Paths Panel and is italicized along with the words Vector Mask. You can then use the black and white arrows to alter the mask. Shape Layers Shape Layers simulate vector objects in Illustrator by combing a color fill adjustment layer with a Vector Mask. When using the pen tool, click on the Shape Layers icon in the Bar at the top of the screen. You can edit the path with the black or white arrows and change the color by double-clicking the adjustment layer icon.
