1 Theme Definitions Of the Blue Mountains Photography Group Incorporated March 2012 BMPG Theme Definitions Page 1 of 5
2 THEME DEFINITIONS 7 DEADLY SINS Wikipedia describes the 7 Deadly Sins as a classification of "objectionable vices that have been used since early Christian times to educate and instruct followers concerning fallen humanity's tendency to sin". The traditional version is usually given as wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony and have been depicted across time in literature (Chaucer's The Parson's Tale , a collection of Star Trek Seven Deadly Sins Stories 2010), art (Bruegal the Elder 1558) and film (Seven 1995, Groundhog Day 1991). In preparing an image for exhibition photographers may consider one or more of the traditional 7 Deadly Sins. Images might portray, but need not be limited to, a literal, humorous or ironic interpretation or a combination of all three! No exception to the submission rules will be given. THE BOX, To be defined at the event BLACK & WHITE(Monochrome) Black and white = from very dark grey to a very clear grey = monochrome work. Black and white toned entirely in a single colour = remains monochrome work. Black & white modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour = colour work. To stand in the colour print section. CELEBRATION OF LIFE Party, a social gathering, feast day or holiday or life in general. The celebration should be obvious and be a vital part of the composition. COLOUR The intent of this topic is to challenge photographers to produce an image where colour (one or more) is a defining characteristic. Consider the effect of colour on mood, emotion, intent, & impact. Has colour been used in a way that gives the image meaning that would be different if the colour was missing or was altered? An image that is predominantly mono (or de-saturated) but edited to reveal a part of the image in colour is not deemed to fit the topic definition. CREATIVE ABSTRACT A pictorial and pleasing arrangement of colours and shapes that is not recognizable as known objects, although it may suggest any object or scene. The image may have been edited with a software program to achieve the published image. CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY The presentation of a subject in a pictorial and/or pleasing manner that is not usually observed by the human eye. It could involve: The use of in camera technique. The use of computer software to create an image. The use of creative darkroom techniques. A completely different process to all of the above. Creative Darkroom/Digital Darkroom Technique An image that has been created by non standard developing technique. It could also be a normal developing process that has subsequently been modified. A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE A photo taken in such a way as to emphasise a new, creative or uncommon way in which an object(s) appear to the eye. FAMILY SNAPS WITH A DIFFERENCE This topic is an opportunity for photographers to capture an individual or a family group. The subject can be close family members or person or persons unknown to the photographer. The intent of this topic is to encourage photographers to take a different, an unusual, an alternate or a creative approach to Family Portraiture. BMPG Theme Definitions Page 2 of 5
3 Could this be a birthday, holiday, sitting around home, picnic all those family snapshot opportunities but taken with more craft applied to bring wider appeal to the photo than just the direct family? HDR High Dynamic Range, or HDR, is a digital photography technique whereby multiple exposures of the same scene are layered and merged using image editing software to create a more realistic image, or a dramatic effect. The combined exposures can display a wider range of tonal values than what the digital camera is capable of recording in a single image. MACRO Macro photography is close up photography; the classical definition is that the image projected on the "film plane" (i.e., film or a digital sensor) is close to the same size as the subject. MOODY Manner; style; mode; logical form; musical style; manner of action or being. Expressive of a mood, especially a sullen or gloomy mood. Given to frequent changes of mood; temperamental. A prevailing atmosphere or feeling A pervading impression of an observer: the sombre mood of the painting or the group. Could describe weather, people, writing, theatre. State of the mind in regard to passion or feeling NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY City at Night: a scene out-of-doors in a large town or city taken at night. It may consist of illuminations, buildings or people, but there must be evidence to show that the location conforms to the title. An image of a neon sign with no surrounding detail would not be acceptable. City Night Life: an image taken either indoors or out-of-doors, depicting a person or people indulging in some aspect of city nightlife e.g. theatre, dance halls, sporting events, beer gardens. Night Study: an image of buildings or scenery taken outdoors at night with the existing illumination or with flashlight contributing no more than supplementary light. Days End: an image depicting the end of the day from a human or animal involvement. e.g. a child going to bed or a man putting away his tools of work. It could also include just the landscape without human or animal. Night Scene out of doors: any photograph taken out of doors at night, providing that flash is not used. Nocturnal: an image depicting a person(s), animal(s), or thing(s) either in, of, done by or active in, the night. MOODY MONO Black & White (Monochrome) Black and white = from very dark grey to a very clear grey = monochrome work. Black and white toned entirely in a single colour = remains monochrome work. Black & white modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour = colour work. To stand in the colour print section. NAURE Nature photography depicts living, untamed animals and uncultivated plants in a natural habitat, geology and the wide diversity of natural phenomena, from insects to icebergs. Photographs of animals, which are domesticated, caged or under any form of restraint, as well as photographs of cultivated plants are ineligible. Minimal evidence of humans is acceptable for nature subjects, such as barn owls or storks, adapting to an environment modified by humans, or natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves, reclaiming it. The photographer, whatever photographic medium is used, must have taken the original image. Any manipulation or modification to the original image is limited to minor retouching of blemishes and must not alter the content of the original scene. After satisfying the above requirements, every effort should be made to use the highest level of artistic skill in all nature photographs. BMPG Theme Definitions Page 3 of 5
4 PEOPLE PORTRAITS A study of a person ranging from head studies to full length portraits with or without accessories. Ideally a portrait should show some aspect of the character/personality of the subject. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer. AT PLAY An image depicting a person, people or animal/s engaged in some form of play, recreation or pastime. It may also refer to objects or venue/s that is associated with play, recreation or pastime. To occupy oneself in amusement, sport, or other recreation: children playing with toys. Portraiture Using Available Light This competition night is a follow up to the Practical Night of 28 th February and as such the definition will vary slightly from that which might usually be provided for available light. n.b. In other definitions, flash is usually excluded. Available light for this competition evening is defined as: Light that is available in daytime, evening, inside or outside. It includes the use of camera flash, reflectors, candles, torches, street lighting, and car headlights but EXCLUDES photographs taken using studio flash setup. Entries may include, but ARE NOT limited to, images captured on the club night 28 th Feb Shadows: A shadow is an area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object. It occupies all of the space behind an opaque object with light in front of it. The crosssection of a shadow is a two dimensional silhouette, or reverse projection of the object blocking the light. The shadows should be obvious and be a vital part of the composition. Street Photography STREET PHOTOGRAPHY is a type of documentary photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions, and other settings. STREET SCENE is an image taken within the confines of a street or road in a built up area. Could show busker(s) with audience, town square showing sculpture(s) with person or people viewing them. Street photography uses the techniques of straight photography in that it shows a pure vision of something, like holding up a mirror to society. Street photography often tends to be ironic and can be distanced from its subject matter, and often concentrates on a single human moment, caught at a decisive or poignant moment. On the other hand, much street photography takes the opposite approach and provides a very literal and extremely personal rendering of the subject matter, giving the audience a more visceral experience of walks of life they might only be passingly familiar with. In the 20th century, street photographers have provided an exemplary and detailed record of street culture in Europe and North America, and elsewhere to a somewhat lesser extent. IN THE STYLE OF. Margaret Olley, Margaret Preston, Monet, Cartier Bresson. Images submitted should be inspired by, or based on, the style of one of the artists named. The image style inspiration needs to be identified on the evening. The club will provide small labels to identify the style for use on the night. IMAGES CAPTURES WITH OTHER DEVICES The increasing availability of an ever expanding number of new devices, capable of capturing photographic images, provides us with the opportunity to experiment with, and create innovative photographic representations using such devices. Images captured with a traditional camera such as a film or digital SLR, a film or digital point and shoot are ineligible. Members will be required to identify the device used.
