6 V O L U M E 5 2 N U M B E R 0 9 Page 6 BEST COLOUR image _Billy Mills.I took the photograph of the model (Monique) in the Apocalyptic theme shoot during the Hogsback congress. In order to create some spiritual or mystical atmosphere I decided to utilise a twirl effect and entitled the image Casting a Voodoo spell. The photograph of the model was taken with a Nikon D7100 and a Nikkor mm lens, set in manual mode at F11, a shutter speed of 1/8sec, focal length of 60mm and an ISO of 400 with spot metering and an exposure compensation of -0.67EV. The post processing was done in Photoshop CC with TKv4 and NIK Collection applications. As requested, the Twirl Effect can be created by duplicating your base or background layer and applying Filter Blur Radial Blur set at 100 and click zoom and best. Align the centre point of the radial blur to the centre of your focal point or subject, then click OK. Depending on the overall effect you want you can increase the radial blur each time by clicking alt+ctrl+f. Experiment with this process by increasing it up to 5 times and make the decision on which one you want to use then duplicate the layer. Click on the first blurred layer and apply Filter Distort Twirl set at +80 degrees and press OK. On the second blurred layer apply Filter Distort Twirl set at -80 degrees. Click OK and then change the blending mode from Normal to Lighten so that both layers will be visible. Group the two blurred layers together and put a layer mask onto the group. Then with a soft black brush paint back in the unblurred parts of the subject that you want to see. Ideally reduce the opacity and flow of the brush to bring back the subject gradually with a smooth transition thereby only showing the sharpest areas of the image where they are required.
7 V O L U M E 5 2 N U M B E R 0 9 Page 7 BEST MONO IMAGE Joan Smit Rural dwelling I came across this image while I was going through old disc, and thought it would make a good mono. It was taken on a Club outing to Newlands in I used a Nikon D70s, with a Sigma lens at f4, focal length 200mm, shot in raw and converted in Nix software. Best Junior Mono image Cog Kathy Smith took this image in the late afternoon at the Queenstown Air show in June. It was a dull afternoon, windswept clouds and minimal sunshine. I used my Nikon D7200 with my mm Tamron lens. The exposure was set at F7.1, 640 th sec and ISO 200. The cog is dark green, I changed the image to B = W and put a slight sepia tint on the final image.

10 Nkonkobe Animal Care NAC was started by Petro Heunis more than ten years ago and, of the initial committee, she is the only member who is still active. NAC has no paid employees and all the work, feeding the animals, cleaning the kennels and otherwise caring for them is done by herself. One casual worker helps with feeding the animals in the mornings. At the moment the shelter for stray and neglected animals of Nkonkobe Animal Care accommodates dogs and cats at kennels in the industrial area and fifteen at her home in Fort Beaufort. In addition, animals also are fed at the homes of their owners who simply do not feed them. Currently she feeds 65 dogs daily as well as stray cats at the local Hospital. Many dogs are let out onto the streets by their owners to find food for themselves and are seriously neglected. The areas of Fort Beaufort, Alice and Hogsback, are served by NAC when reports of cruelty or accidents are received, of which there are many. To curb the number of stray animals, it is absolutely necessary that they be sterilized as their offspring will have no home and no future. Also, animals who suffer should be put down as soon as there is no hope of recovery left. Many such animals roam around our streets. The amount of cruelty to animals is frightening and a book can be written about it. The financial burden of feeding that many animals, and of giving them shelter and their regular injections, not to even mention the necessity of having them sterilized, has become a real crisis. It simply costs a fortune and donations in the form of food and cash have virtually dried up so that the situation is desperate. The photo competition came about as a result of the desperate situation described above and a suggestion that such a competition be run in the hope that it may grow to some really substantial dimension in future. It is now only being run for the first time and we sincerely hope that it will pass the test well. Three volunteers have come on board and we badly need public exposure towards awareness of our plight which very much involves the community. ENTRY FORM Click on"enable editingplease enter early.
