The Amp-Hours Remaining wi be reset to the fu amphour capacity of the battery. Page 18 Introduction The VAH-65 Battery Monitor provides accurate instrumentation for 3 banks of batteries between 9.5 and 33.0 Vots. The VAH-65 dispays votage for three banks and amps or amp-hours for your house bank. It tracks a current entering and eaving the house bank and appies Peukert's and efficiency factors. You can set Low and High votage aarms and Low Amp-Hours Remaining aarms. When activated, the buit-in 85 db aarm wi sound and the dispay wi fash. The VAH- 65 outputs NMEA 0183 seria data or the data ine can be programmed as an externa aarm output or as a charger ON/OFF contro. Five eves of backighting can be seected and a set-up, caibration constants and aarm vaues are saved to nonvoatie memory. The VAH-65 comes compete with a precision shunt and is designed to work with 50 to 600 amp 50mV shunts. Page 3

Output Signa: NMEA 0183, Externa Aarm or Automatic Charger Contro Page 4 Setting Charge Contro ON/OFF Limits If the Charger Contro function is seected for screw termina (B), the VAH65 can be programmed to turn a charger on/off automaticay when required, depending on Amp-Hours Remaining. The factory defaut vaue is to switch the charge source ON when Amp-Hours Remaining drops down to 50% of battery capacity and switch OFF when Amp-Hours Remaining is back up to 90% of battery capacity. Screw termina (B) wi output a +5V signa when the charger is to be activated. To set the upper charge contro output imit (charger turn OFF point) in percent, press both the : and s keys to dispay Amp-Hours Remaining in percent. Then hod down the s key for 10 seconds (unti you hear a ong beep). The upper charge contro imit wi be dispayed in percent. Use the t and s keys to set the desired vaue. Press the : key to save the new vaue to memory. Page 17
3 Seect NMEA, Ext. Aarm or Charger Contro Output Screw termina pin (B) can be programmed as a NMEA 0183 data output, Externa Aarm Output or as a Charger ON/OFF Contro ine. The factory defaut is NMEA 0183 seria data. To togge Screw Termina Pin (B) between NMEA 0183, Externa Aarm Output and Charger Contro, press and hod down both the t and s keys for 10 seconds (unti you hear a ong beep). The dispay wi togge between showing "data", "E-AL" or "-CC- " to show you which mode is seected. The new output mode is automaticay saved to memory. A 5V signa (10 ma Max.) is output on screw termina (B) whenever an aarm condition exists and the aarms are enabed or whenever a charger is to be turned ON automaticay. Page 16 Instaation Before starting the instaation, pease read this entire section first. Be sure to insta the bukhead gasket before you insta the instrument. Finger tighten the screws that mount the instrument bracket - do not use toos. Figure 1 Finger tighten ony - Do not use toos Bukhead Gasket 2-1/8" (55mm) hoe Mounting Bracket Page 5 discussed above, then press and hod the key whie appying power to the instrument. Use the t and s keys to make the dispayed vaue read correcty. Press the : key for 1/2 second to save the amps caibration data to memory. The VAH65 is not accurate enough to, track the amphours for weeks on end whie your boat is at the sip not being used. Sma caibration and measurement errors wi eventuay accumuate and cause the dispayed amp-hours to sowy drift away from the actua amphours remaining in the battery. To minimize the ongterm drift you can program a amp-hours drift compensation vaue between 0 and 100 into the VAH65. The nomina drift compensation vaue is 55. To change the amp-hour drift vaue press and hod both the t and : keys when appying power to the VAH65. Use the s Page 14 (Connect to SHUNT-) Figure 3 Carefuy check a your wiring against figures 2 and 3. You can then mount the VAH65 in the instrument hoe. Insure that the bukhead gasket is in pace and use ony finger tension to tighten the bracket hod-down nuts Do not overtighten the bracket or you may damage the case. Check the Notes and Warning on page 19 for wiring the ground connection. Page 7
4 Dri a 2-1/8" (55mm) mounting hoe where you desire to mount the instrument (Figure 1). Bring the shunt wires, ground, and power ines out of the mounting hoe and use a sma fat screwdriver to make the connections to the screw termina on the instrument case back as shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3. and t keys to set the desired vaue. Press the : key for 1/2 second to save the new vaue. If the dispayed amp-hours is drifting down faster than it shoud, increase the drift compensation vaue sighty. Decrease the drift compensation vaue sighty if the amp-hours is drifting up faster than it shoud. NMEA 0183 Sentences The VAH65 can output seria data of battery votage, amps and amp-hours remaining in NMEA 0183 format. The sentences are output on screw termina (B) in the foowing formats: Page 6 Figure 2 Vots: $IIXDR,U,xx.x,V,VAH35*CS Amps: $IIXDR,I,xxxx,A,VAH35*CS A-H Remaining: $IIXDR,G,xxxx,,VAH35*CS *CS = Check Sum Page 15 Key Functions Operation The keys are used to seect what to dispay, backights, caibrate vots/amps, turn aarms on/off, set aarms and set/change constants. New information is automaticay saved to memory when the : key is pressed. Turning Aarms ON/OFF Press the s key 1/2 second to turn aarms ON. In Votage mode, the Battery1 icon wi bink. Press the t key 1/2 second to turn the aarms OFF. Backight Intensity Press : the key 1/2 second to adjust the backight eve for night viewing. Each time you press the : key 1/2 second, the eve wi get brighter 1, 2, 3, 4, OFF, Caibration/Zeroing/Adjusting Amp-Hour Drift The VAH-65 is caibrated at time of manufacture, but can be caibrated using the front pane keys. To caibrate the votmeter, press and hod the key whie appying power to the instrument. Use the t and s keys to make the dispayed vaue read correcty. Press the: key for 1/2 second to save the caibration data to memory. To make the ammeter read zero when no current is being used, press and hod the : key for 10 seconds whie viewing Amps. The VAH65 wi dispay "AUTO", automaticay zero the reading and save the auto-zero information into memory. To caibrate the Ammeter, first zero the amps scae as Page 8 Page 13
5 Changing Peukert's Exponent Peukert's Exponent reates how efficienty you can draw current from a battery. Because of inefficiencies, the faster you drain the battery, the smaer the battery appears to be. The defaut Peukert's Exponent is 1.25 (shown as 125), which is typica for many batteries. To change Peukert's Exponent, press and hod the : and s keys whie appying power to the instrument. Peukert's exponent wi be dispayed. Use the t and s keys to set the desired vaue. Press the : key for 1/2 second to save the new vaue. If your battery seems to discharge faster than what the VAH-65 is teing you, try increasing Peukert's Exponent sighty. Lower the exponent if the reverse is true. The correct setting wi depend upon how your battery was manufactured and it's age, etc. Page 12 1, 2,... etc. Screw termina pin (D) must be switched ON for the backights to work. Dispay Vots/Amps/A-H/ A-H % Remaining Quick press the, or keys to seect Battery Votage, Amps or Amp-Hours dispay. Pressing the key repeatedy wi step the dispay through Battery 1, 2, 3, 1, etc. To dispay the Capacity Remaining (Amp-Hours% Remaining), press the and keys simutaneousy.
