These are Mike Taylor s preferences and tips on how to spray Metal Flake using SATA and HOK products: Gun Set Up: I use a SATA 3000 or a SATA When using either gun, I commonly use a 1.3 or 1.4 tip. Using tips these sizes allows me to apply flake in a less aggressive manner, letting the flake lay down smooth and evenly. This also helps prevent heavy clumping or a saltnpepper look. Only when using a jumbo size flake, will I use a 2.0 tip. Base Preference: I prefer to use a base color that complements the chosen flake. A complimenting base will compensate for the areas that the flake does not cover and will not require excessive coats, giving you a uniform appearance. Mixing Flake: When painting with HOK Standard, mini and ultra mini metal flakes, I use S200 Trans Nebulae Base Coat Clear. S200 is a true base coat and has a suspending agent that allows the metal flake to lay down smooth. I prefer to mix 2 parts S200 to 1.5 parts RU Reducer. When mixed as a sprayable quart, I then add 1 teaspoon of flake. This is a good starting point as different flake colors will vary in coverage. After you spray your first coat, you can then add more flake if desired. Application of Flake: I prefer the Air Pressure to be at 25 to 29 psi and my gun distance to be 810 inches, as I like to spray with a quick motion. I typically apply 34 coats, letting each coat flash 1015 minutes in between. Clear Coat: Once satisfied with the flake coverage, spray 3 coats of HOK USC01 Clear, allow clear to dry overnight, wet sand with 600 and then reapply 23 coats of HOK USC01 Clear. Optional: After I wet sand the initial 3 coats of clear with 600, I now have the option to add art work, graphics or candy over the smooth flake finish. Once you have finished with the additions, reapply 23 coats of HOK USC01 Clear. Final Finish: Once clear has set over night (minimally), I wet sand starting with 1000 grit paper, finishing with 2500 grit paper and polish to a smooth shine finish.

11 SATANEWS 11 Vol. 26 No Continued from page 1: Specialty nozzles WSB nozzle size for the SATA HVLP One of the more notable is the WSB for SATA HVLP guns. This nozzle set has been in existence since the SATAjet 2000 B. It is a nozzle set today widely used for many of the waterborne basecoats. The fan is a bit narrower, yet taller. This gives a slim, tall, even fan pattern designed to evenly distribute waterborne basecoats for even metallic control. It has also helped to atomize and dry the waterborne materials very well for many of the paint companies. It is available for the SATAjet 2000 B, SATAjet 3000 B and now for the SATAjet 4000 B as well. The gun distance remains in that 46 inches for coverage coats, and typically in the 1012 inch range for the control coat, drop coat or effect coat as they are called by various paint companies. Air pressure recommendations for each paint manufacturer may vary. But remember with the SATAjet 4000 B the pressure for coverage coats may be lower than in previous models. HC+ for the SATAjet 4000 B HVLP A new nozzle set has been produced in late 2013, and is beginning to be used in It is only available so far in the SATAjet 4000 B HVLP. It is named simply the HC+. This nozzle is typically used in either water or solvent, or the new Low VOC basecoats when used in hot dry climates. It is a more focused fan than the traditional SATAjet 4000 B HVLP 1.4. It is slightly shorter by about an inch, but is also about 3/8 inch wider. It produces a bit larger droplet, and helps to prevent rings or halos on blends in hot dry weather. It is also effective when using an HVLP gun to spray clears that were formerly recommended for the 1.4 nozzle size. 1.3C for the SATAjet 4000 B HVLP This nozzle size was originally developed for use when spraying low viscosity clear coats, or for solvent basecoats with very thin viscosity. It takes the fluid flowrates of the SATA 1.3 HVLP and compacts it into a slightly shorter, but wider fan for faster wetting, and a cleaner edge when spraying clear coat. It helps to keep very thin materials in either clear or solvent basecoats from splitting the fan when used in hotter climates, or when using a bit too high air pressures. It also helps in some hot dry environments to spray waterborne, when it is simply flashing too fast with the lack of humidity. But the 1.3 C in the SATAjet 4000 B HVLP has now become more of a general purpose nozzle. If you are a painter that wants a bit faster gun speed, the more focused fan may suit you perfectly as well. If you want one nozzle size to spray thin solvent base, clearcoat, and the occasional single stage job, then this may be the nozzle size for you. SATAjet RP 1.2 W nozzle size For the SATAjet 4000 B RP, SATA has developed the 1.2 W nozzle set. This nozzle set is a bit like the WSB for the HVLP. It simply takes the fluid flow rates of the SATAjet 4000 B RP 1.2, and stretches it to a bit wider, yet thinner fan. It helps in areas where humidity may be a bit higher, and you want help to flash off your waterborne basecoat. P Nozzle size for the SATAjet 100 B The SATAjet 100 BP is a gun dedicated by the nozzle size to spray Polyester fillers. Most paint companies offer a product which is basically sprayable body filler. The P nozzle is designed with a 2.5 mm fluid nozzle and a 3 mm air cap. The aircap is designed with very short horns, to prevent buildup of the polyester material on the horns. The SATAjet 100 BP gun is also notably different with its black polished anodized body. The lightweight gun, with this specialty nozzle size is a great choice for spraying the sprayable body filler in a defined smooth fan. It effectively creates less sanding, and helps greatly to remove surface imperfections. This gun is also a great addition for spraying many truck bedliner materials. Many people use the tintable bedliner materials for spraying the inside of fenders and tins on street rods and motorcycles. This is both for durability and to maintain color match on the back side of the panels. SR nozzle sizes for the SATAminijet The SR nozzles, short for Spot Repair, have been in the SATA line since the beginning of the SATAminijet 3 era. They carried on through the SATAminijet 3, SATAminijet 4, SATAminijet 3000 B and now the new SATAjet 4400 B HVLP and RP. The spot repair nozzles are the primary nozzle used in automotive refinish. It is taller and more rectangular in shape than the standard nozzles. This makes it a great nozzle set for spot repairs and painting small panels as well. It is perfect for blends, and small repairs, jamming, and invisible repairs. The air pressure is very flexible, and can typically be used from 1029 psi on the HVLP, and 835 on the RP model. SATAminijet SR nozzle sizes are available in the following HVLP 0.8 SR, 1.0 SR, 1.2 SR, 1.4 SR RP (pending SCAQMD approval) 0.8 SR, 1.0 SR, 1.2 SR The most common size used in the SATAminijet 4400 B HVLP is the 1.2 SR. This is a nozzle size that can be used for spot primer, sealer, solvent base, water base and clearcoat. If you do choose the new SATAjet 4400 B RP remember the fluid flow rate is 30% higher than the HVLP, and you may choose 1 size smaller than you spray in the HVLP. 14 SATANEWS 14 Vol. 26 No Warfighter Made Warfighter Made, left to right, Brian Meyer, Butch Lynch, Rob Blanton, with the Warfighter 67 Camaro. I was able to meet with the three gentlemen behind Warfighter Made based in Temecula CA. The team consists of: Butch Lynch, owner of Imagineering Shop, a custom restoration shop and longtime SATA consumer, was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2005 and was given a 5% chance of survival. Beating the odds, Butch wanted to help others, so he turned his appreciation for life to those who made a positive impact on his (and each and every one of us), and started helping wounded warriors customize their vehicles. Robert Blanton is a 21 year active duty Reconnaissance Marine (soon to be retired), who received the Silver Star medal for Extraordinary Heroism during actions in Iraq, Since 2009, Robert has been dealing with the effects of PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and has been sharing his personal trials and tribulations with this invisible injury, to encourage fellow service members to seek treatment. Brian Meyer, a medically retired veteran of the United States Marine Corps with over 12 years of service. Brian was an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team Leader, and while defusing a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in 2011 when it detonated, causing him the loss of his right hand, right leg, and left him with only his pinky and ring finger on his left hand. In spite of the challenges all three have faced, they each have a very positive outlook on life and want to help other wounded veterans through the creation of Warfighter Made. So what does Warfighter Made do? Warfighter Made modifies, adapts, and customizes combat wounded service members or veterans owned vehicles, so they can continue doing the things they enjoy, while their vehicle reflects their individual Brian Meyer with his best friend Veritas personality. This follows the Warfighter Made credo Adapt to the injury Customized to the soul. Warfighter Made invites ill, injured and combat wounded service members/veterans to participate in the build of a Warfighter Made owned project, a HandsOn Recreational therapy, even If a Warfighter Member does not have a project to provide, but would like to participate. Once completed, Warfighter Made funds those individuals to participate in events, shows, and races to show the world their accomplishments. Eventually the project will be auctioned off as a Warfighter Made Vehicle, with all the proceeds going back to the Warfighter Made Project Fund. Warfighter Made also works with other likeminded nonprofits, businesses and individuals to ensure the service member/veteran gets the best experience possible. I was invited to visit their shop anytime, so shortly after the SEMA show; I took them up on the offer during a trip to California. While touring the facility my eyes were immediately drawn to Brian s modified HarleyDavidson with a left hand throttle. As a right hand amputee myself, it s a lucky thing that Brian wasn t in the office that day and the bike was inside blocked by another project, or I think I would have stopped the tour right there and gave that throttle a twist for the rest of the afternoon. Brian s bike was the Warfighter Made pilot project. It was a Night Train that he previously owned before his injury. Like myself, Brian s desire to get back on his bike grew, and that s when he was introduced to Butch at Imagineering Shop. From there, along with Rob, Warfighter Made was developed. The team knew they had a long road ahead, but the possibility of Brian riding again could be attained. Butch fabricated the Side Hack that provides a spot for Brian s service dog, a Great Dane named Veritas. Veritas is a vital tool for Brian s everyday life, so it s only fitting to have his best friend along for the ride. The side hack seat is mounted with a pull pin system that Brian can easily attach the seat for his wife. Butch moved the throttle to the left side, added the ignition switches and relocated his turn signals, horn and light switches in front of the handle bars for easy access. The shifter linkage was passed through the frame and converted to a custom hand shifter that Brian operates with his prosthetic and a foot brake was added to the left side that actuates the front and rear brake through a proportioning valve. The car that saved Rob s life, and started the idea of recreational therapy for him and others with PTSD was given to Rob s mom in 1971 as a high school graduation present. She parked it in 1989 and it sat in the elements until Rob picked it up in After four deployments, Rob started to have issues with PTSD and was on a path of selfdestruction. Rob s wife (also a U.S. Marine) reached out to Butch to get Rob involved in his Camaro build. It gave Rob something to focus on and look forward to. Recreational therapy at its finest! Another recently finished project is a Can Am modified for Davey Lind. Davey is a dual leg amputee from Iraq, An avid motorcycle rider prior to his injury, the Can Am gave him the confidence to ride again and experience everything we love about motorcycle riding...with one small problem. Davey s Can Am came with foot pegs. Without him realizing it, his prosthesis would vibrate off the pegs, leaving his legs hanging precariously close to the ground. Being able to walk again after the type of injury Davey sustained is an understandably important part in his life. The thought of his legs becoming damaged and taking away his earned independence, was a problem Davey thought would preclude him from riding his machine ever again. Whether the pressure is set too low or too high, color deviations will be the undesired result. The consequences are expensive rework disrupting the efficient work flow. With the aim to eliminate incorrect inlet pressure as a possible cause for quality problems, SATA currently offer spray guns with digital pressure gauges integrated in the gun handle, while for nondigital SATA spray guns there is the retrofit option of the SATA adam 2 available. The advantages of both solutions are obvious: They are compact, lightweight and precise, and enable the painter to keep the pressure always under control. Now, SATA is launching an additional retrofit solution for pressure control: With the SATA adam 2 U (U=Universal), consisting of a SATA adam 2 U dock and the SATA adam 2 display, the painter has now the option to adjust and monitor the inlet pressure in digital form on any type of gun whether SATA dry jet blow guns or other brands of spray guns. The display indicates the inlet pressure with an accuracy of +/ 1 psi, while the adjustment screw on the SATA adam SATA adam 2 mini dock for SATAminijet spray guns 2 U dock allows to set the pressure precisely. The retrofit unit SATA dock offers even further options for digital pressure control: Combined with the SATA adam 2 display, it replaces any analogue pressure gauge with G 1/8 male thread, e.g. on pneumatically operated systems or when upgrading an existing SATA air micrometer with analogue pressure gauge #27771 to digital. Simple unscrew the existing analog gauge from the micrometer and screw in the SATA adam 2 U dock (#195925), then slide on the adam 2 display. The SATA adam 2 display can now be used on all spray guns, either installed on the back or on the bottom of the gun. For this issue we wanted to feature a shop that does a variety of work. We were glad to meet Steve Vale from Steve s Restorations at the 2014 VTwin Expo. We asked Steve to give us some details of what they do, and here was his answer. My name is Steve Hale, I own and run Steve s Restorations and Hot Rods of Frankfort, NY. At Steve s Restorations and Hot Rods, high end show cars are our specialty. However we do everything from custom car and motorcycle building and design, to custom painting, and classic car and motorcycle restoration. We have a crew of 37 people, that range from their early 20 s to mid 60 s, that are all fun, energetic, knowledgeable and skilled to say the least! My first car restoration, a 1960 Jaguar MK1 Since I opened my business in 2006 (when I was 20), we have built a lot of very cool projects and have some great stories to tell of the trials and tribulations of getting them done! In November of 2012 I relocated my business into a 12,000 square foot facility that needed to be completely revamped. After working around the clock (literally) for almost a year, we have created what numerous people have told us to be one of the coolest and nicest shops they have ever been in! In the mean time and more importantly in the future we have also been and will be working on some very wild and interesting projects. Some of which include: A completely customized handicap accessible Harley Davidson motorcycle (for a customer that we have also built two handicap accessible 1972 Torinos for) The restorations of a 1950 s Coca Cola Handicap accessible 72 Gran Torino machine and a few antique strength testing machines, all of which will be on display in our showroom, along with our foosball table, arm wrestling table and unicycle! The showroom also features our custom 50 s style diner that we built and a couple of our finished vehicles or motorcycles are always parked in there. The complete build of a 1968 Firebird with a brand new Dynacorn body The restoration of a 1955 Chevy that hit a telephone pole The restoration of a 1969 Superbee, that we cut two cars in half (one smashed in the back and the other in the front) and made one car from! 21 SATANEWS 21 Vol. 26 No Continued from page 1 Lower pressure In many cases painters who pick up the SATAjet 4000 B spray guns first try them at pressures that they may have been using in all former generations of SATA guns, including the SATAjet 2000 B and SATAjet 3000 B models. For some this works out very well, but for others, changes needed to be made to gain a significant increase in transfer efficiency as well as an incredible finish result like no other. In many cases lower air pressures than previously used seems to be the key to success. When spraying the SATAjet 4000 B in either HVLP and RP it is apparent immediately that these guns are more flexible to use at lower pressure than the preceding spray gun models from SATA. Let s take a look in general at some suggestions when spraying various products, with either HVLP or RP versions of the SATAjet 4000 B. Low VOC High Solids Clearcoat. Today we are using many varieties of High Solids Low VOC clear coats. Many of them contain high amounts of Acetone or Oxsol. This clear can be very fast in nature. With fast clears, using the SATAjet 4000 B RP version, especially when it is hot, we are seeing pressures regularly used in the 22 psi range, and some even lower. This allows the proper wetting, fast working speed, and very fine atomization for a smooth finish result. It also dramatically improves the transfer efficiency, and leads to much better profit potential by cutting material costs, as well as significant labor savings on cleanup and polishing reductions. Other High Solids clear coats are not designed for small spot repairs, and are not so fast in flashoff times or curing. They are instead designed for larger areas, or for more of an overall paint job. Some of these clears may even be one in the same, but have a range of hardeners from rapid to slow to accomplish the tasks at hand. When spraying these as a slower high gloss clear, pressures with the SATAjet 4000 B RP usually work beginning at around 2627 psi. In cooler temps, perhaps a couple pounds higher, and in hotter temps, even lower. But the days of spraying clear at 35 PSI are gone. In fact, on the gun s handle with the SATAjet 4000 B RP max pressure allowed to reach the approval of the SCAQMD and EPA is 32. But it is very rare that that high of pressure needs to be used. Low pressures in conjunction with smaller nozzle sizes are often used when spraying these high solids low VOC slower clear coats. We have seen a very large increase in the 1.2 nozzle sets for the SATAjet 4000 B RP. Waterborne with the SATAjet 4000 B RP We are also seeing an increase in the use of the SATAjet 4000 B RP for spraying today s waterborne basecoats. Pressures ranging from 2223 psi in dry climates, to 2930 in wetter more humid climates make this gun very flexible. The 1.2 is also a great choice in many cases for spraying water. In hot dry climates, upsizing to the 1.3 is very often effective. Using the SATAjet 4000 B HVLP With HVLP we see some similarities to the RP version as well. The SATAJet 4000 B HVLP uses a max inlet pressure of 29 psi for base or clear, to meet the requirements of 10 psi or lower at the air cap s horns or center. But spraying clearcoat or basecoat, this gun too can be sprayed lower in pressure than in the past. When spraying high solids clear coats with the SATAjet 4000 B HVLP version, it is often sprayed as high as 2829 psi but can again be lowered when spraying some of today s very fast clears down into the 24 psi range, or lower when needed. We are seeing also a trend to smaller nozzles for water or high solids clear, but for todays very fast clears the trend is towards a 1.4 or 1.5 nozzle size in the HVLP guns. Waterborne basecoats sprayed with HVLP Waterborne basecoat sprays most often best in the 2627 psi range for coverage coats. 28 or 29 psi may be used in high humidity areas to help with flash off and dry times. But lower pressures near 24 are often used when in dry hot climates for best results. Nozzle sizes range per paint manufacturer from WSB to 1.3 or 1.4, and even some with a 1.5. So check with your local supplier for the size you should use with the paint you are using. Low VOC Basecoat (Compliant Basecoat) The latest trend has been paint companies developing and using Low VOC basecoats. These are solvent based using compliant solvents, again many times containing amounts of Acetone or Oxsol. It is typically fairly low in viscosity, and requires much lower air pressures to atomize it. We are seeing the HVLP nozzle sizes being around 1.4 being used most common. But the key has been lower air pressures. We are seeing great success with the HVLP guns in the pressure range of 16 psi, and in general, seeing a variety of 1418 psi most often used. The 1.3 RP has also been used in many cases, with an inlet pressure very low at 14 to 18 psi. Generally speaking, if you have a SATAjet 4000 B HVLP or RP, and you want to see your wetting speed improve, overspray be greatly reduced, and transfer efficiency improve as well, turn the pressure down. It is also important to remember gun distance and overlap. The SATAjet 4000 B HVLP should be sprayed at a distance ranging from 46 inches, and the SATAjet 4000 B RP at a gun distance of 57 inches. If it is your first time spraying the SATAjet 4000, move closer than you normally would, and use a 75% overlap, you will love the way it sprays. SATA cert The spray gun plays a crucial role in the coating process and significantly contributes to ensure high quality standards. Consistency in the quality standard is a basic requirement during the entire coating process. Over time, every paint spray gun is subject to wear and tear or becoming clogged or damaged. Very often, this is recognized too late; the consequences are an increased number of coating flaws and expensive rework.
