1 AN INVITATION TO THE THEATRE ARTS COLLECTION PAINTERS FOR THE THEATRE November January 1974 This exhibition of designs by 29 artists introduces the Theatre Arts Collection of The Museum of Modern Art. The collection, uncataloged and unresearched because of lack of funds, totals some 400 drawings. In addition, but not represented here, a number of drawings for films and happenings as well as printed lithographs and woodcuts, posters and programs are owned by the Museum. The Theatre Arts Collection is an aspect of the Museum little known to the general public. As early as 1934, however, such a collection had been envisioned. In that year Lee Simonson organized for the Museum an "International Exhibition of Theatre Art, " a comprehensive survey of scene and costume design. In 1939, Lincoln Kirstein founded at the Museum a Dance Archive which in 1944 was enlarged into a separate curatorial department, Dance and Theatre Design. In 1962, the collection was incorporated with those of the Department of Drawings and Prints. The present selection is not intended as a survey of theatre design by modern artists. It does suggest, however, the richness of the Museum's holdings. Such a collection remains particularly relevant to a museum concerned with the arts of our time, when so many of the foremost painters have contributed their talents to the theatre. The selection ranges from productions of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes to, most recently, Oh! Calcutta! W.S. L. Checklist NOTE: In the listing below, uninscribed dates are enclosed in parentheses. In statement of dimensions, sheet size is given, height precedes width. Acquisition numbers are followed by photographic negative numbers in parentheses. All works are on paper.
