The collection is a glimpse into the extensive collection of works that the gallery represents, celebrating just a few of Findlay s superb artists. Included in the exhibition are modern masters Alexander Calder, Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso; colorist Simeon Braguin, and many others. Findlay Galleries has an extensive collection of works on paper. Works on paper can bring into focus the sense of composition and structure the artists use throughout their oeuvre. For example, Picasso s use of line covers a wide range of styles, spanning from the flowing and elegant to the bristling and expressive - markings which seem to express not only the drama in the composition but also the inner force of the creator. With Alexander Calder a degree of stylistic and iconographic continuity exists among his prints, yet they were all created with very diverse purposes, including literary illustrations, poster designs, and studies related to sculptures and paintings. The prints provide a glimpse into the artist s working process while capturing his iconic style. This Summer Exhibition also showcases some of the internationally renowned contemporary artists that Findlay Galleries proudly represents. The gallery s contemporary collection encompasses a wide variety of styles, including abstract works and landscapes, as well as works by modernist artists and representational artists. 8 pablo picasso Spanish ( ) Exposition Vallauris, 34/200, Linocut in Colors on Wove Paper 30 1/2 x 23 3/8 inches FG The works on paper by Pablo Picasso ( ) embrace many different media and techniques. He drew constantly using pencil, pen and ink, pastel and watercolor. Some of these works are very complete studies, others are doodles sketched on café tables. Picasso s works on paper also include a lifetime of creating intaglio prints. These etchings, drypoints and aquatints range from his Saltimbanques of and his Suite Vollard of to his 347 Series and 156 Series, respectively dating from 1968 and Finally, lithography and linocut were used extensively by Picasso, particularly from Picasso was responsible almost single-handedly for what was a fifth major period in the history of lithography since its invention at the end of the eighteenth century. In 1958 z-1964, with his new and revolutionary technique of the one-block, multicolored linocut, Picasso added still another dimension to his works on paper.

15 john ferren American ( ) UT # 1, 1968 Ink, Pastel and Oil Spray on Paper 23 1/2 x 17 1/2 Inches FG In moving from geometric abstraction to the academically based figure and stilllife paintings he did after the war, and finally to the freely painted expressionist work of his later years, Ferren searched for a way to express moral truth. Throughout his life, he viewed painting as a means of seeking the reality behind appearance. His early appreciation of Kandinsky and a fascination with Zen that dated from his youth helped define the way he thought about painting throughout his life.
