MONOTYPE workshop with STUART ShIlS Open to Intermediate Artists of all Media Explore monotype printmaking with an emphasis on color, design and mood as keys to visual coherence and graphic strength. Working from window views and in-studio drawings, students will employ graphic shorthand and visual memory to generate imagery that captures the essence of places and moments through color and form, exploring the intimate relationship between observation and abstract structure. Join Roberto Osti, artist, teacher and author of Basic Human Anatomy: An Essential Visual Guide to gain the confidence to understand and enjoy drawing the beautiful forms of the human figure. Begin with study of the human form from a structural point of view: basic landmarks, essential volumes, and proportional relationships of body. Then focus on the main muscle groups and the aesthetic aspects they produce in the body. Each day will be divided into a lecture and then drawing from the model, with individual assistance. Complete a series of sketches and finished illustrations based on personal or published text in graphite, colored pencil, and colored inks. Examine story structure and pacing, character development, symbolism and color, and the balance between text and image. Great illustrations from the past and present at PAFA s Center for the American Artist will provide both inspiration and models for creating more expressive and informed work. Students are invited to bring their own illustrational artwork for a critique. Join Joe Sweeney for a plein air painting retreat in beautiful Cape May, New Jersey! Experience small town hospitality while painting Cape May Point, the Cove with sweeping vistas, Cape May Lighthouse, and Sunset Beach. Includes tips on choosing a prime location, reading the weather and light at a particular time of day, and setting up a landscape palette. Morning and evening painting times will leave the afternoons free to relax on the beach the perfect artist s getaway! Color will be the focus as participants paint from an expansive still life environment. Known for his complex and gorgeously rich abstract paintings based on nature, Scott has had many solo exhibitions in Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco and London, and has received numerous honors and awards. ClASSICAl figure DRAwING & PAINTING with JUlIETTE ARISTIDES Capture the vitality and gesture of the life model under the guidance of PAFA professor Bruce Samuelson, whose work combines a virtuosity of Old Masters-influenced draftsmanship with elegant abstraction. Hone your own approach to the figure, whether academic or expressive, through Samuelson s individually-tailored instruction. Foundational principles of structure, anatomy, form and gesture will be presented through demonstration, critique, and discussion of master drawings, past and present. During this 5-day extended workshop, frequent demonstrations will break down the process of figure drawing and painting into clear and consecutive steps, along with individual instruction and critique each day. AllA PRIMA STIll life with ChRISTINE lafuente All Levels Welcome Brooklyn-based painter and PAFA alum Christine Lafuente considers her paintings poetic responses to visual experience. Responding to the still life motif, learn how to build an oil painting directly, with the emphasis on color. The workshop will begin with a painting demonstration, followed by painting sessions in which students will be guided through a series of focused procedures: composing a painting and establishing tonal design, mixing color, achieving harmony and palette organization, applying large color masses, and using principles of oil viscosity to build form into wet-into-wet painting. Learn to paint your way through the mystery and uncertainty of the art-making process in this intuitive, practical and empowering workshop with acclaimed artist and PAFA graduate faculty member, Neysa Grassi. Dispel the voices of criticism in your head, and learn to perceive doubt as a valid means of investigation rather than a destructive force. Work in gouache and mixed media on paper to discover the freedom that comes from generating imagery without preconceived outcomes. Discussion of painting practices and feedback on students previous work will supplement studio activity. Instruction will be presented on an artistto-artist basis, whether participants are beginners or seasoned artists. Whether forming a foundation or looking to refine your craft, draftspeople of all levels will benefit from this combination lecture/hands-on workshop examining the variety of materials and papers for academic drawing. Learn how to effectively sharpen a graphite or charcoal pencil to a fine point, which eraser to choose, what a paper stump is for, and much more! Discover the range of drawing papers available from cardboard to cotton, including fine artists papers such as Fabriano and Hahnemühle, and learn how to select surfaces for metalpoint, graphite, conté and other materials. Original drawings will be presented as examples of each material and technique. 6 SUMMER STUDIO CRITIQUE PROGRAM JUlY 9 AUGUST 17 Designed for artists and educators who desire constructive feedback on their artwork as well as the support and interaction of an artistic community. Registration includes a private studio in the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building, and individual Friday critiques from a stellar ensemble of nationally and internationally known artists, including members of the PAFA s acclaimed faculty. Lead critic Neysa Grassi will hold group critiques, discussion and field trips. TOM CSASZAR is an artist, writer and lecturer. His paintings have been exhibited regionally for over 25 years. He has written numerous articles over the last two decades for the Journal of Art, Artnews, Art in America, American Crafts, Sculpture and the New Art Examiner, where he served as a Contributing Editor from 1993 to He is a member of the International Association of Art Critics and the College Art Association. He teaches Readings and Research and Aesthetics and Criticism and serves as a critic in the PAFA graduate program. Tom Csaszar, Difficulty Striking a Balance, 2017, oil on canvas, 34 x 38 in. BROOK DAVIS ANDERSON is the Edna S. Tuttleman Director of the Museum at PAFA. Prior to joining PAFA in 2017, she most recently served as Executive Director of Prospect New Orleans/ U.S. Biennial. Previously she served as Deputy Director of Curatorial Planning at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and was Founding Director and Curator of the Contemporary Center at the American Folk Art Museum in New York. She has served as an Assistant Professor at Columbia University, City College of New York, and Winston-Salem State University. RENÉE P. FOULKS interest in old master painting techniques distinguishes her work for its sumptuous surfaces, virtuosic realism and exquisite detail. Foulks exhibits her paintings and drawings extensively throughout the United States, at venues such as the PAFA Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Delaware Art Museum, and the Oglethorpe Museum of Art in Atlanta. She has been a faculty member at the University of the Arts and at PAFA, where she teaches figure, portrait and narrative drawing/painting courses; is a critic in the BFA and MFA Programs; and serves as Chairperson of PAFA's Drawing Department. Renée Foulks, Manifesto, 2010, graphite on paper, 24 x 24 in., Collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts NEYSA GRASSI is known for her gouache, mixed media, and oil paintings whose surfaces reveal the intense physicality of her creative process. Grassi is a recipient of a Pew Fellowship and has had solo exhibitions at several museums, including the Pensacola Art Museum in Florida and PAFA, as well as numerous one-person exhibitions in galleries in Philadelphia and New York. Her work is included in the permanent collections of PAFA, the Berman Museum of Art, the Palmer Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Woodmere Art Museum. She is represented by Locks Gallery, Philadelphia. She is a critic in PAFA s graduate program. Neysa Grassi, Untitled (9), gouache on paper, 16 x 16 in., courtesy of Locks Gallery, Philadelphia MARK GREEN holds a BFA at Washington University in St. Louis and MFA in painting at the University of Delaware. He served on the faculty of the Parsons School of Design, Paris Campus, and now teaches at the Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York. Intrigued by architectural forms as the vessels for our lives, and the psychological/emotional histories they contain, his paintings of singular houses and buildings are expressionistic portraits that defined states of being be they melancholic, brash, enigmatic or blissful. Mark Green, House (approach), oil & wax on panel, 28 1/4 x 24 in. AUBREY LEVINTHAL is a painter living and working in Philadelphia. Her practice centers around still life and narrative imagery but with an overarching concern for formal language. Recent show venues include Nancy Margolis Gallery and NOVELLA Gallery in New York, Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia, and Woodmere Art Museum. She is also an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant recipient. She has taught in the BFA program at PAFA and at Rowan University, Penn State University and Burlington County College. Learn to use the camera as an expressive tool as you develop an understanding of photography s technical and visual aspects. Instruction covers camera functions, compositional strategies, image editing in Photoshop, creating digital prints, and photographing artwork for a portfolio. Learn how to incorporate their methods into your own figure painting. Instruction and demonstration will cover Goya s powerful use of light and dark, the complex color of Titian, the dynamic compositions of Degas, the brilliant technique of Velazquez, and the expressive light of Leonardo and Vermeer. Learn underpainting techniques, glazing and scumbling layering methods, and wet-into-wet alla prima painting. Supply selection and care, historical palettes and pigments, varnishes, framing, storage, and health issues will be discussed.
