1 A. K. Prakash IMPRESSIONISM IN CANADA A Journey of Rediscovery With a foreword by Guy Wildenstein and an introduction by William H. Gerdts. 802 pages, 24 x 29 cm, 653 illustrations, mostly in color. Hardback with dust jacket. English. 78 [D] US$ 85 CAD ISBN Impressionism in Canada A New Standard Work Originating in France in around 1870, Impressionism is one of the most infl uential styles of classic modernism. Accordingly, much has been published about it and, in particular, its European proponents. For a long time, there was little research into Canada s contribution. Now, with the current publication of over 800 pages, IMPRESSIONISM IN CANADA A Journey of Rediscovery by A. K. Prakash comprehensively bridges this gap in art-historical writings. The fi rst part of the study looks to France. Since the late 1860s, young and ambitious US-American artists fl ocked to the academies in Paris and were soon captured by the ideals, techniques and the artistic scope of the Impressionists there. Canadian artists followed in the 1880s. As the second part of the publication about the situation in North America shows, from the middle of the 1880s Impressionism evolved to become the preferred art movement, in Boston and New York in particular. It was not until the end of the century that artists with Impressionist leanings in Toronto and Montreal were able to secure support from art dealers, collectors, gallerists, and the media. Finally, the third and most extensive section of the book looks into the lives and works of fourteen of the most significant Canadian Impressionists including William Blair Bruce, Maurice Cullen, J. W. Morrice, Laura Muntz Lyall, Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté, Helen McNicoll, and Clarence Gagnon. Have you seen our online press portal? There you will fi nd the covers, images and press releases of our new publications available to download. You can also leaf through our books on our website. We look forward to your visit. Other painters who employed Impressionist techniques over time are also presented for example, the renowned Group of Seven. In this review it becomes clear why the works of the Canadian Impressionists today not only belong to the most sought-after ever in their homeland but also attract ever more interest in other countries. With over 650, mostly large-format illustrations, this well-founded and well-researched publication provides a comprehensive overview of Canadian Impressionism, from its origins in France to its dissemination in North America, and investigates the lives and works of the most significant artist personalities a standard work on Canada s contribution to the arguably most important style in Western art history since the Renaissance. It is a magnifi cent piece of scholarship... full of wonderful, often very little known or unknown works of art and, really, a complete survey. There never was, and I suspect there never will be, a comparable study. Dr. William H. Gerdts, Chairman and Professor Emeritus, Graduate School of Fine Art, City University of New York, New York For more information or free review copies, please do not hesitate to contact us: Winfried Stürzl presse@arnoldsche.com ARNOLDSCHE Art Publishers Liststraße 9, D Stuttgart Fon +49 (0) Fax 79 www. arnoldsche.com Page 1
2 Press Material Testimonials Impressionism in Canada: A Journey of Rediscovery... is essentially a missing chapter from the history of Impressionism itself. Guy Wildenstein, The Wildenstein Institute, Paris The fl uent style and wealth of information in this book is encompassing and tells the whole story. Dr. Leo Jansen, Curator of Paintings, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam A lavish and expert survey of Canadian artists under the spell of French Impressionism. It will be essential reading for anyone interested in the fi rst wave of international modern art. Dr. Charles F. Stuckey, former Curator, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC Impressionism in Canada, exploring the extension of the original French style of painting into North America, brings forward a new dimension to the history of this important movement. Michael J. Tims, Chairman, Board of Trustees, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa A. K. Prakash s passion and commitment to the subject are legendary. The narrative derives from the objects and celebrates our own associations to nature and life. David Thomson, Chairman, Thomson Reuters, Toronto About the Author A. K. Prakash, art patron and collector extraordinaire, is an independent art advisor based in Toronto. In a varied and distinguished career spanning four decades and culminating in his appointment as a Privy Council Offi cer of Canada, he served as Advisor to the Cabinet Secretariats of two Prime Ministers of Canada and as advisor to the Canada Council for the Arts and the CBC, Ottawa; UNESCO, Paris and New Delhi; and the UN Development Program, New York and Cairo. In addition, he has guided the formation of some of North America s most prominent collections of Canadian and French art. Contents Foreword xxv by Guy Wildenstein Introduction 1 by William H.
