1 Australia s Impressionists THE NATIONAL GALLERY Tuesday 14 February In the first UK exhibition of its kind, four innovative Australian Impressionist artists, Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder, and John Russell, are showcased in an exhibition that sets out to explore the evolution of Impressionism within the context of Australia. From snapshots of life in the rapidly teeming cities of Melbourne and Sydney to dazzling landscapes of coast and bushland, these artists- like their colleagues in France, England and America- embraced plein air painting to capture the fleeting effects of light in the landscape. On loan from Australia s leading museums and private collections many of these marvellous paintings have never been seen before in the UK. Stunning self-portraits by Rembrandt, Rubens, Artemisia Gentileschi, Lucian Freud and David Hockney are exhibited alongside portraits painted by friends, relatives and even pupils. The most reliable surviving likeness of Leonardo, a portrait by Francesco Melzi, his student, is included. 3 Michelangelo & Sebastiano: A Meeting of Minds THE NATIONAL GALLERY Wednesday 26 April In 1511, two great Renaissance masters, Sebastiano del Piombo and Michelangelo, met in Rome where Michelangelo was completing the Sistine Chapel. A rare and remarkable friendship developed, one that evolved into a powerful artistic collaboration. Two of these collaborations: the 'Pietà' for San Francesco in Viterbo (c ), an exceptional loan, and The Raising of Lazarus, painted for the Cathedral of Narbonne, one of the foundational works in the National Gallery Collection, are the focal point of this exhibition. Choice artworks that precede their historic meeting will be displayed with examples of their extensive and intimate correspondence. 4 America after the Fall: Painting in the 1930 s THE ROYAL ACADEMY Thursday 11 May The most powerful art of the 20c may have been created by artists working in America during the 1930 s. In the wake of the Wall Street crash, changes in urbanisation, industrialisation and immigration pulsed across the country. Many artists working at that time were able to capture on canvas the massive impact of the social and economic trauma. In a once in a generation exhibition at the Royal Academy, 45 iconic works by Jackson Pollock, Georgia O Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Thomas Hart Benton, Philip Guston, and others, provide an electrifying portrait of a transformative period. Franklin D. Roosevelt, a truly humane and civilised American president asserted at that time: Art is not a treasure in the past or an importation from another land, but part of the present life of all living and creating peoples. Hung in chronological order, the 125 watercolours and drawings range from highly coloured, detailed Pre-Raphaelite attempts to follow John Ruskin s go to nature precepts to sweeping wash sketches by James McNeill Whistler and Philip Wilson Steer, to the abstractions of artists like Graham Sutherland and Henry Moore. 6 Canaletto and the Art of Venice THE QUEEN S GALLERY Thursday 15 June The Royal Collection contains one of the finest groups of 18th-century Venetian art in the world, including the largest collection of works by Canaletto once owned by Canaletto s agent, the major patron and art collector, Joseph Smith. Through over 200 paintings, drawings and prints from the Royal Collection's exceptional holdings, Canaletto and the Art of Venice presents the work of Venice's most sharp-eyed view-painter alongside that of his contemporaries, including Sebastiano and Marco Ricci, Rosalba Carriera, Francesco Zuccarelli, Giovanni Battista Piazzetta and Pietro Longhi, and explores how they captured unique Venetian scenes for their 18th-century audience, as they do for us today.
