1 LA MERIDIANA International Centre of Ceramics in Tuscany Sketching, Making and Meandering with Jan Edwards September 17 th 29 th 2017 Putting Line, Pattern and Colour on Clay and on Paper Setting our feet on a path of Inspiration and Exploration We will spend our first week at the clay studio at la Meridiana, using red terracotta clay, coloured slips, and black stain to embellish what we make. There will be instruction on making tiles and simple slab pots. A cornucopia of decorative techniques will be demonstrated, including brush painting, resists, and sgraffito. How best shall I decorate this pot to enhance its form? This question will be addressed by exploring some of the techniques and design ideas used by artists from the Etruscans to the present. Additionally we will doplein-air painting and drawing in clay in the classic Tuscan landscape just outside the studio

2 The heart of our second week will be a house in southern Tuscany, in Maremma, a wild country with beautiful coastline. We will start our days with 2 or 3 hours of plein-air painting and/or drawing. Daily instruction will be offered in composition, colour theory, mixing colour and perspective We will be working mostly in watercolour and ink and demonstrations will be adjusted to fit the needs of the group. During the afternoons and evenings we will venture further afar, to explore ancient villages with buildings carved in stone, archaeological sites and last but not least, the gourmet treasures of wine, cheese and fish found in the area. A small sketchbook and pen will be sufficient to capture impressions of our meandering. This workshop is open to art lovers with all levels of experience. It is well suited to potters who want to explore colour and to painters who want to get their hands in some clay Upon returning to La Meridiana, we will celebrate our creativity and friendship with a final feast.

3 At the end of the day, we will gather around the table where our personal chef Giovanni will spoil us with fresh meals and local wines. Transportation with our private van will give us the flexibility to venture out exploring this fascinating area, crossroad of the ancient people of the Etruscans. Through observation, sketching and painting, the impression of what we see will sink in our souls and nourish our imagination for a long time. Upon returning to Certaldo, our clay pieces will be fired. With a final feast we will celebrate our friendship and our creativity.
