Les Enluminures Made in Paris
Paris today is known as a center of art and culture, where lovely things are made and sold. This has been true for centuries. In the Middle Ages, if you wanted a beautiful illuminated manuscript, Paris was the place to go. From the thirteenthsixteenth centuries Paris was home to a makers and sellers of books, providing books for the king and royal court, for bishops and other clerics, for professors and students at the university, and for wealthy merchants.
1-2. Paris was the most important center in all of Europe for copying and illuminating Bibles in the thirteenth century. Tiny pocket Bibles were a Parisian invention, and were a great success. Many hundreds survive. Large format copies like our beautiful Harcourt Bible were less common. 1. Vulgate Bible Paris, c illuminated foliate initials and 8 historiated initials by the Mathurin and Aurifaber ateliers 640 folios. Dimensions 145 x 95 mm. TM 913 $180, The Harcourt Bible Vulgate Bible, volume one (Genesis-Proverbs) Paris, c illuminated foliate initials and 29 historiated initials by the Bari atelier 319 folios. Dimensions mm. $525,000 3
Many medieval readers identified with Job and his sufferings; Job is seen here on his dung heap (no. 2) King Solomon, known for his wisdom, shown as a teacher (no. 1) 4
3. Parisian booksellers made many copies of texts by Dominican and Franciscan friars. These sermons by the Dominican Nicholas of Gorran were probably copied during his lifetime. NICHOLAS OF GORRAN, Sermons Paris, c One historiated initial 136 folios. Dimensions 203 x 139 mm. TM 868 $95,000 The Dominican convent in Paris, founded in 1218, gave the rue Saint-Jacques its name
4. A deluxe manuscript beautifully painted by a follower of Jean Pucelle, an artist who worked for Jean le Bon, King of France ( ). This was certainly made in the circle of the royal court in Paris for the Order of the Trinitarians of St.-Mathurin. Breviary of St.-Mathurin Paris, c miniatures by a follower of Jean Pucelle 400 folios. Dimensions 185 x 130 mm. $185,000 The artists Jean Pucelle (d. 1334) and Jean le Noir (d. c. 1380) both worked on the rue Erembourg de Brie (later the rue des Enlumineurs)
The subjects illustrated in the historiated initials are almost always related to the opening words of the Psalm Psalm 1, David, the author of the psalms, playing the harp Psalm 38, I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue Psalm 26, The Lord is my light Psalm 52, The fool said in his heart there is no God
Psalm 68, Save me O God for the waters are come Psalm 92, Sing to God a new song Psalm 80, Rejoice to God our helper Psalm 109, The Trinity, The Lord said to my Lord
5. Parisian illumination prospered with the patronage of the French kings and aristocracy in the later fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Jean, duke of Berry ( ) owned at least six manuscripts painted by this artist, known as the Virgil Master. VIRGIL MASTER (active Paris, c ) Crucifixion Paris, c Miniature. Dimensions c. 225 x 136 mm. $28,000
6. Perrin Remiet specialized in luxurious copies of French vernacular texts and painted miniatures for numerous patrons in the circle of King Charles V ( ) PERRIN REMIET ( ) The Ages of Man miniature from Bartholomaeus Anglicus, Le Livre des propriétés des choses France, Paris, c Miniature. Dimensions c. 100 x 86 mm. $19,000
7. A pocket-sized Book of Hours painted by the most important artist working in Paris c This miniature tells the story of three living men who are reminded of their own mortality when they ride out and meet three dead men. Hours of Pierre de Bièvre (Use of Paris) Paris, c full-page miniatures, 1 half-page miniature, and 12 historiated initials by the Maître François 167 folios. Dimensions 125 x 81 mm. $65,000 The illuminator Maître François had his business on the left-hand side of the bridge
The manuscript s stunning Renaissance binding, c , features oval medallions of the Crucifixion and the Annunciation An unusual miniature with scenes from the life of Christ
8. The artist of this deluxe manuscript illuminated a famous copy of the historical work later known as the Chronique scandaleuse by Jean de Roye (d. 1495); he also illuminated printed books The Monypenny Hours (Use of Paris) Paris, c full-page miniatures, 2 large miniatures, 10 small miniatures and 24 calendar miniatures by the Master of the Chronique scandaleuse (active c ) 215 folios. Dimensions 167 x 115 mm. BOH 102 $400,000
Drolleries enliven the borders: at the top, a hound chasing a boar; at the bottom, a long-necked bird and an animal (a fox?) with dragon wings St. Luke; as a medieval scribe, copying a text on a scroll, we see his slanted desk, his ink horn to one side, and an elaborate table/ book case below
9. Printing was introduced to Paris in by Heynlin and Fichet at the Sorbonne. Books of Hours rapidly became one of the specialties of Parisian printers and publishers, decorated by metal engravings, many of which were designed by artists who also illuminated manuscripts. Printed Book of Hours (Use of Rome) Paris, Simon Vostre, c. 1515; with an earlier tipped-in almanac of large metalcuts, 28 small metalcuts and hundreds of border metalcuts, after designs by the Master of the Très Petites Heures of Anne of Brittany, Jean Pichore, and an anonymous Master working in the style of Dürer 140 folios. Dimensions 178 x 114 mm. BOH 75 $25,000 Simon Vostre (fl ) printed and published in Paris at the sign of Saint John the Evangelist on the rue Neuve Nostre-Dame
Children s games decorate the calendar Martrydom of Saint John the Evangelist by an anonymous Master working in the style of Dürer
10. Germain Hardouyn was a prolific printer active in Paris from 1500 to 1541, who worked in tandem with his brother Gilles Hardouyn. The two brothers furnished the Paris market and the provinces with numerous impressions of printed Books of Hours, often handcolored like this opulent example. Printed Book of Hours (Use of Rome) Paris, c. 1526, almanac large, 10 small and 16 medallions after designs by Jean Pichore, likely hand-colored in the Parisian workshop of Germain Hardouyn 84 folios. Dimensions 188 x 128 mm. BOH 60 $60,000
Printed Books of Hours often begin with an advertisement from the printer/publisher; the text below this picture gives the address of Hardouyn s shop, telling his customers where they could buy this book It is almost impossible to tell that this image is actually a hand-colored engraving
11. The work of this artist, a prolific and successful forger, is an interesting coda to the history of illumination in medieval and Renaissance Paris. Although known as the Spanish Forger, he borrowed freely from chromolithographic editions published in Paris for his compositions, and remnants of old Parisian newspapers have been found inside the frames. THE SPANISH FORGER (active Paris, c. 1890s to 1930s?) Seated Queen with Female Saint and Falconer France, probably Paris, perhaps after 1925 Miniature. Dimensions 235 x 144 mm. $6,500
