MUSEO SALVATORE ROMANO, PIAZZA SANTO SPIRITO 29 The Fondazione Salvatore Romano museum is placed in an old convent inside a refectory created by Augustinian friars next to the church of Santo Spirito. The refectory is built with a fourteenth-century Gothic style and is the only room in the renowned Santo Spirito to still have its original structure. Andrea Orcangna, a famous Italian painter in Florence, decorated the entire eastern wall with fragments of a Last Supper towards the bottom and a beautiful Crucifixion, this painting can be found in the Fresco room in the museum. This wall is one of the largest paintings left from the fourteenth century. The Cenacolo room is one of the few original parts to remain untouched by the fire in It houses many sculptures and painting. Today, the museum is used to house collections of sculptures, paintings, artworks and antique furniture donated by art collector Salvatore Romano. Romano took it upon himself to help set up the museum until he died in His last wish was to be buried in the sarcophagus located against the wall in front of the fresco; this showed his dedication and love for his work. He wanted to bring more heritages from ancient times up until the 14 th century.
CAPPELLA BRANCACCI PIAZZA DEL CARMINE The beautiful Cappella Brancacci is a small chapel within the otherwise pretty plain Santa Maria del Carmine Church (due to the fact that most of the church was destroyed in a fire in 1771). It is considered a miracle that the Brancacci and Corsini Chapels survived the intense fire that destroyed everything else in less than 4 hours. The Cappella Brancacci was founded in 1268 by a group of monks that arrived from Pisa to Florence and created a church of the Blessed Virgin of Carmel. In 1423 the Brancacci family decided they would decorate the chapel and Felice Brancacci hired Masolino da Panicale and his pupil Masaccio to paint the inside of the chapel. Both Panicale and Masaccio passed away before completion and it wasn t until 1480s that Filippino Lippi completed it. Sadly, a fire swept through and damaged much of the chapel, in 1780 a new alter and floors were put in but it wasn t until the 1980s when the entire chapel was given a dust removal. Now the chapel has brighter paintings. The restorations highlighted Masaccio s chiaroscuro (light and shade) and his grasp of perspective.
PALAZZO DAVANZATI VIA PORTA ROSSA, 13 The Palace was built by the Davizzi family around mid-14 th century but was purchased by the Davanzati family in 1578 and remained in their care until 1838 when it was divided into many flats and suffered damages. In 1904 it was bought by antique dealer Elia Volpi who restored the building, fully furnished it and then opened it to the public as the Museum of the Old Florentine House. The architectural structure, one of the most important features of the building, shows the transition from a medieval tower house to Renaissance building. The arrangement of the museum is a reconstruction of an old Florentine home; the furniture and household tools date from 14 th to the 19 th centuries. The building has unique feature of a three-arch loggia, which once opened and used as a store. The museum also holds a rare wooden chest or throne-bed with inlaid front and headboard from the Tuscan-Umbran area.
UNIVERSITY OF FLORENCE, DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE FORMER CONVENT SANTA VERDIANA PIAZZA GHIBERTI N.27 Niccolò Manetto di Buonagiunta founded the convent in 1395 for nuns about 30 km outsides of Florence. It took about five-years to restore the entire building before the nuns could move in. In 1402, the convent was planed under protection of the Republic of Florence and in 1425; a second phase of construction began. The third stage of construction was financed by Cosimo the Elder but it was his son Giovanni de Medici who probably paid the expenses. The Medici stem on the wall marks the occasion. In 1807 the Grand Duchy of Tuscany was annexed to France following Napoleon s victories, with the emperor s wishes to curtail the power of the Catholic Church, Santa Verdiana along with 65 other religious institutions were suppressed. In 1865 the government took possession of the convent and temporarily used it as a women s prison, which soon became permanent. The convent was therefore closed and modifications were made. Sixty years later, during WWII, political prisoners were held in the prison. When the new prison at Sollicciano was completed in 1983, the inmates of Santa Verdiana were transferred there, and the convent, sold to the university, was once again transformed.
MUSEO BARDINI VIA DEI RENAI, 37, The Bardini Museum is named after its designers Stefano Bardini who was a collector of art and after much commercial activity transformed his collection into a museum and donated it to the City of Florence. Along with being a collector of art Bardini also became known for his building restoration, he transformed some of the old building into a neo-renaissance building. The museum collection includes over 2,000 pieces dating from the eighteenth centuries and earlier including sculptures, paintings, furniture, ceramics, and tapestries. The exhibits and restorations follow the original design by the founder, which was important to him. Some of the pieces include Our Lady of Cordai by Donatello, Charity by Tino Camaino and Atlas by Guercino.
It s important to know craftsmen of Florence I ts important to protect their history It s important to pass on their traditions and preserve them in time The Centro Congressi al Duomo, the seat of practical application of Life Beyond Tourism, conceived and created the initiative VO PER BOTTEGHE in order to raise the awareness and bring its participants closer to the identity of territory in line with our intention to transform the tourist in traveller. 13 LIFE BEYOND TOURISM - HERITAGE COMMUNITY For over 15 years, the Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco has devoted its energies to promoting cultural exchange programmes and projects among young students and professional people from different walks of life and cultural backgrounds. The experiment was very successful and soon led to the forging of a broader vision designed to promote the enhancement of a regions and their local economy through tourism based on the welcome extended and on a real knowledge of the destination and its traditions and local realities as they have evolved and continue to evolve over time. In lifting the lid on what we share and what typifies us, LBT aims to promote intercultural dialogue to foster mutual understanding, in accordance with UN and UNESCO guidelines. Through cooperation with over 400 cultural institutes and international organizations, including UNESCO, LBT devises projects for the safeguard and enjoyment of cultural assets at the local and international levels, as best practices designed to promote intercultural dialogue. To date LBT has promoted over 100,000 days' of intercultural dialogue, organizing major events and occasions in its region. The Heritage Community Who we are The Portal, an offshoot of the LBT vision, is a tool for the dissemination of knowledge targeting the region's potential visitors. Its underlying principle is the contention that a region's culture is the result of interaction between its cultural heritage and its ongoing development Aims The Portal aims to highlight and communicate a region's specific features as they change over time, stressing the way in which an area puts its tangible and intangible heritage to good use on both the human and environmental levels. The Region as a Team A key factor in this process are the institutions and businesses spawned by their region and which have grown up around their heritage in a context of respect for the region and the visitor alike. An important aspect in ensuring that a region's specificity is recognized, is the presence of institutions and businesses which, despite their importance, don't enjoy the high profile they deserve. The Portal offers businesses a chance to stand out and to highlight their activities as being representative of their region's culture. Self-Awareness Self-awareness is one of the Portal's most crucial aims. Businesses and the public at large can improve their awareness of the cultural institutions that live and work among them. Lesser-known cultural institutions can present simply and clearly the heritage on which they base their existence and the deep bonds they have with the society to which they belong. Self-awareness is the key ingredient in the successful promotion of a true ethos of hospitality, so crucial in presenting a region's character to the world at large. For more information:
