1 Expo Chicago WIND curated by YINKA SHONIBARE, MBE September 19 21, 2014 Preview: September 18 Booth 613 Installation view, MCA Chicago Plaza Project: Yinka Shonibare, MBE, MCA Chicago, 2014 Photos: Nathan Keay, MCA Chicago On the occasion of EXPO CHICAGO 2014, James Cohan Gallery is pleased to present a booth exhibition WIND, curated by Yinka Shonibare, MBE, inspired by Chicago s identity as the Windy City as well as in dialogue with his Wind Sculptures series currently installed on the MCA s Plaza through October Shonibare created a presentation that investigates the symbolic, metaphorical and phenomenological aspects of wind, pairing works by the gallery s artists with folk art and non-western cultural objects. Featured artists include Yinka Shonibare, MBE, Michelle Grabner, Spencer Finch, Shinique Smith, Kara Walker, Charles Burchfield, Helene Appel, Yun-Fei Ji, Hiraki Sawa and Alan Saret, among others. The Wind Sculptures series developed out of an earlier work I presented on the Fourth Plinth in London s Trafalgar Square, Nelson s Ship in a Bottle (2010), which inspired me to ruminate more on sails. I m fascinated by movement and dynamism, which are both embodied by a taut sail whipping in the wind as well as by the convoluted trade history of the Dutch wax fabric I use in my work. I aspire to capture a particular moment in each piece; my headless sculptural figures refer to the broader colonial period, while these Wind Sculptures conjure the tangible from the intangible transforming the transient insignificance of a passing breeze into something fixed and monumental. --YINKA SHONIBARE, MBE
