1 Cooperative Extension Service Leslie County Main Street #514 Hyden, KY Fax: extension.ca.uky.edu It is with great excitement, fear, and some sadness that I want to let you know that I am finely retiring. The excitement comes from this long anticipated adventure into a new life-style. I have thought for years that I was perfectly designed for a retired life. The fear simply comes from the unknown. The sadness comes from the simple fact that this has been my life for 25 years which I have thoroughly loved. It has been my pleasure to help my friends [old and new] in so many fun and challenging ways. We have battled lady bugs, bats, snakes, grub worms, potato beetles and various wild animals. You and I have worked on sick trees, flowers, yards, beans, tomatoes, gardens, honey bees, and even pet chickens. Not all of it has been successful but I have felt good making new friends and trying to make a difference. Someone asked what have I done that I am most proud of? It would probably be helping to get the Veterans Cemetery here in Leslie County. I felt such pride after nearly twenty years from the first helicopter ride to the dedication [and uncounted trips to Frankfort and even Washington] to drive on the spur and see the flag and eagle at the gate. I m also proud that I was able to help develop some of the City of Hyden s parks and points of beauty. Likewise I am proud to have improved lives. I am especially proud of positively influencing the lives of young people. After spending time with young people at 4-H Camp, working with eggs, chicks and dulcimers I have come to the conclusion that we have some incredible young people. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your lives for so long. I truly feel honored. I am compelled to say that I have been so fortunate to have worked with the greatest people. Many faces have passed through this office. Like family we may have disagreed a time or two but I can say I have loved and respected each and every one. We are blessed to have such great people in our extension office. Again thank you and I wish you the very best. Vicki R. 3 4-H NEWS Vicki R. Boggs, Leslie County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development Agent Education Professor Popcorn Professor Popcorn Professor Popcorn Professor Popcorn 4-H Mountin' Tops Horse 4-H Teen Council TALK ABOUT FEELINGS There are many feelings you can have. No matter how you feel good or bad it is healthy to put your feelings into words. Talking about feelings helps you feel close to people who care and it helps you feel better when you are sad or scared. It is okay to feel sad. Everyone feels sad sometimes. As long as they don t happen too often or last too long, sad feelings like all emotions are just a natural part of life. When you are in a sad mood, it is important to talk about your feelings. You do not have to wait for a big problem to talk about your feelings. Getting enough sleep is important. When you are not rested, it may make stress feel much worse. A parent, grandparent, coach or a teacher can be a good person to talk to. You can start by going to the trusted person and saying, Can we talk for a minute? Then say how you feel and why. Even if you don t know why you feel a certain way, you can still talk about it. You can say, I feel upset, but I don t know why. It can also help to talk about happy things, too. Paying attention to the good stuff (especially during sad times) can help turn your mood in a positive direction. Here are some tips that can help you go from a bad mood to a good mood: Coming Up September 4 Hayes Lewis September 5 WB Muncy September 6 Stinnett September 7 Mountain View September 10 th 5:30 Extension Office September 27 th 3:30 Eat healthy foods! Make sure to eat well. Starting the day with breakfast can help you handle the day ahead. You should eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, meats and whole grains. Do not be fooled by the energy you get after having a soda or sugary foods and candy. That good feeling will wear off fast and you may feel even worse than when you started. Get the right amount of sleep. When you are not rested, it may make stress feel much worse. Getting enough sleep is important. You need it to recharge for the day ahead. Go play! Getting your body moving is a great way to help you feel happy. Exercising on a regular basis can help give you an outlet for all different types of feelings. To get moving, you might want to play a game with your friends or take a walk with your buddies. Take time to relax. Take a break by painting, coloring or listening to your favorite music. Go to your favorite spot to sit and read or even daydream. Write it down! You may want to start writing in a journal. Writing down how you feel can make you feel good and help you let go of your feelings. Find a quiet spot and grab some paper and start writing. If you keep feeling sad, remember to talk to someone you trust! Keeping your feelings inside is not healthy. Talk to a parent, friend or a teacher about how you are feeling. They might be able to help you think about your feelings in a different way. For more information contact Vicki R. Boggs, Leslie County Agent for 4-H Youth Development Education at (606) REFERENCE:

8 FCS NEWS Source: Natalie Jones, UK physical activity program coordinator We all know we should exercise every day for better health. But fitting it in can be tricky with the demands of home, family and career. If you have fallen off the exercise wagon before you know how easy it is once you miss one day to skip the next one. That s why it is so important for us to make exercise a daily habit. Research suggests it takes 21 days of doing an activity before it becomes a habit. Actually, if the habit is a new or a harder one (like exercise), it can take the average person up to 66 days to form a strong habit. Here are some tips to work exercise into your daily routine. Set daily workout reminders on your phone or keep a daily activity log. Exercise around the same time each day. Try to exercise first thing in the morning or right after work. It is really hard to stay motivated if you go home before hitting the gym. Make your gym clothes visible. Lay your gym clothes out the night before. You may even want to sleep in them if you plan to work out first thing in the morning. If you prefer evening workouts, put them by the door or in your car the night before so you don t forget them before going to work. Choose goals that are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely), and track your progress. Post your goals. Decide what your fitness goals are, and post them in a place where you ll see them to keep you focused. Reward yourself when you achieve your goal. Pick some activities you enjoy and switch up your routine to make it interesting. Being active does not always mean going to the gym. You can always walk or run outside or play a sport. Exercise around others. Work out with a friend, sign up for a class or meet with a trainer to help you stick to your goal.
