2 SKILL LEVEL Easy SIZE Finished Width About 24 inches (61 cm) Finished Length About 64 inches (163 cm) MATERIALS Lion Brand Homespun Yarn (Art. #790) A: , Hepplewhite, 2 balls B: , Sundae Stripes, 2 balls Lion Brand large-eyed blunt needle Tunisian crochet hook size N-15 (10 mm) or size needed for gauge Crochet hook size L-11 (8 mm) or two sizes smaller than Tunisian hook GAUGE 10 stitches and 7 rows in Tunisian simple stitch/4 inches (10.2 cm) Gauge is based on complete rows (forward and return passes). Do not count the forward and return pass as separate rows. For gauge swatch, using Tunisian hook and A, ch 15. Row 1 forward: Insert hook in second ch from hook, yo, pull up lp. *Insert hook in next ch, yo, pull up lp. Repeat from * across. Total 15 lps on Row 1 return: Do not turn. Yo, pull through 1 lp. *Yo, pull through 2 lps. Repeat from * across until 1 lp remains on Row 2: Sk st immediately below the lp on the hook (that lp counts as the first st on the row). *Insert hook behind vertical bar of next st (keeping hook to the front of the work), yo, pull up lp. Repeat from * across to final st. Insert hook behind final vertical bar and the horizontal thread that runs behind it. Total 15 lps on Row 2 return: As for Row 1. Repeat Row 2 until swatch measures at least 4.5 inches (11.4 cm). Each row will have 15 sts. Fasten off. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, use a smaller size hook; if more stitches and rows, use a larger size

3 NOTES Every Tunisian crochet row is worked in two passes: the forward pass, which adds loops onto the hook, and the return pass, in which loops are worked off the The right side of the work will always be facing you; do not turn. For the forward pass of Row 1, insert hook into the starting chain as specified and pull up a loop. (There are no vertical bars until Row 1 is complete.) Color changes are done at the beginning of each return pass. To change colors, drop the old color at the end of the forward pass, then yo and pull through 1 loop with the new color. Do not cut the old color; carry it up the side so you can pick it up at the beginning of the next return pass. STITCH EXPLANATION Tunisian simple stitch (Tss) Look at the row of stitches you are going to work into. You will see a vertical bar for each stitch. These bars are what you will work behind as you do the forward pass. 1. To start the forward pass, skip the first vertical bar (on the far right side, directly below the hook). The loop on your hook counts as the first stitch in the row. 2. Slide the hook from right to left through the next vertical bar, keeping the hook to the front of the work. Yarn over, pull up a loop. To work the final stitch, identify the final vertical bar and the horizontal strand that runs behind it. Insert the hook so it is behind both of these threads. Yarn over, pull up a loop. Working the final stitch in this way creates stability along the edge of the piece. This completes the forward pass. Switch to regular crochet Row 1: With B, sc in each st across, entering each st as for Tss. Work 3 sc in corner. Sc evenly around remaining 3 sides of shawl, working 3 sc in corners.
