2 SAFETY CHECK To use a sewing machine safely: Stitch slowly when learning how to use the machine. Keep your fingers away from the needle. Do not lean too close to machine, in case the needle breaks. To use equipment safely: Keep shears, scissors & seam rippers closed when not in use. Pass sharp objects handle first. Keep pins in a pin cushion...not in your mouth. To press and iron safely- Do not touch a hot iron. Keep your hands and face away from the steam. Position the cord so the iron doesn't get pulled off the ironing board.

3 USING AN IRON STEAM IRONING BASICS 1. WATER IS REQUIRED! 2. READ GARMENT CARE LABEL. 3. SET TEMPERATURE DIAL BASED ON FABRIC TYPE USE FABRIC KEY ON BOTTOM OF IRON. 4. TO STEAM DIAL SETTING = 4 or ALLOW IRON TO PREHEAT 1-2 MINUTES. 6. STEAM BUTTON IN UPPER POSITION. FILLING IRON WITH WATER 1. TURN IRON OFF. 2. POUR WATER INTO OPENING, FILL TO THE MAX LINE. DRY IRONING 1. PUSH STEAM BUTTON DOWN. 2. TEMPERATURE SETTING = FABRIC TYPE. 3. ALLOW IRON TO PREHEAT 1-2 MINUTES. WHEN FINISHED IRONING- 1. STORE IRON IN UPRIGHT POSITION. 2. TURN IRON "OFF" OR UNPLUG - IF YOU ARE THE LAST ONE AT THE IRON.

4 IRONING TIPS If water drips from iron...this indicates: Temperature selector is not in steam area. Iron turned OFF (automatically turns off after 60 minutes). Iron is NOT plugged in. Iron has not preheated. To prevent scorching or damaging fabrics: Read garment CARE LABEL. Select correct ironing temperature for fabric. Check to see that ironing board cover is clean. Check to see that iron surface is clean. If burned while ironing: Inform teacher. Run under cold water. Use a frozen sponge.

5 Common CAUSES of Sewing Machine PROBLEMS PROBLEM NEEDLE BREAKS POSSIBLE CAUSES The needle is dull, wrong size or put in wrong. Pulling or pushing on fabric while sewing bends the needle. Hitting pins. UPPER THREAD BREAKS Upper machine thread is not threaded correctly. Tension on the upper thread is too tight. The thread has knots. LOWER THREAD BREAKS Bobbin thread is not threaded correctly. Lower thread tension is too tight. Bobbin is wound too full. UNATTRACTIVE STITCHES Machine is not threaded correctly. Thread tension is not correct. Bobbin thread unevenly wound or loose. SKIPPED STITCHES Heavy finish on fabric - Wash fabric before sewing. The needle is dull, bent, or put in wrong. Machine is not threaded correctly.

6 Important Parts of the Sewing Machine and Their Functions Enlarged View of: #3 Presser Foot #5 Feed Dogs 1. Needle Threader Lever After aligning the needle, push down to thread the needle. 2. Thread Cutter Use to cut threads. 3. Presser Foot Must be LOWERED to sew. Holds the fabric in place while sewing. 4. Bobbin Cover Remove to insert bobbin, keeps this area of machine clean. 5. Feed Dogs Feeds (moves) the fabric while sewing. 6. Presser Foot Lever Raises or lowers the presser foot. 7. Reverse Button Machine sews backwards while pressing this button. 8. NEEDLE POSITION BUTTON ALIGNS NEEDLE WITH THREADER!! FIRST BUTTON TO PUSH WHEN THREADING MACHINE!!! Raises and lowers the needle automatically. 9. Speed Range Controller Controls the sewing speed; overrides the Foot Controller s speed. 10. Spool Pin and Cap Holds the spool of thread. The Cap keeps the thread on the Spool Pin. 11. Bobbin Winder Use to fill the bobbin with thread. (Winds the bobbin!) 12. Stitch Width Adjustment Adjusts width of ZIGZAG stitches. 13. Stitch Selections Keys & Indicator Press keys to change stitch pattern - Numbers displayed in window. 14. Needle STOP Position Key If key is LIT, needles stops in the down position; if UN-LIT the opposite. 15. Stitch Length Adjustment Adjusts length of stitch. (Ranges from no stitch to long stitches.) 16. Hand Wheel Raises or lowers the needle by hand. Must turn it TOWARDS YOU!! 17. Foot Controller Use your foot to press down on to make the machine sew

9 HOW to THREAD the NEEDLE by HAND 1st STEP RAISE Presser Foot Need RED LIGHT Follow the dotted line to the needle. Cut the fuzz off of the end of the thread. Thread needle front to back, place thread under presser foot.

10 Threading the NEEDLE using the NEEDLE THREADER Step 9 - Lower the needle threader lever until it clicks. Raise UP the Presser Foot Red Light required! RAISE NEEDLE - PUSH NEEDLE POSITION BUTTON ***Remember it aligns the needle with the threader! 9 Step 8 - Use thread cutter to cut the thread. Needle Position Button 8 Step 7 - Pull the thread through the thread guide discs FIRMLY. 7 Step 10 Pull on the loop of thread that passed through the eye of the needle until the end of the thread is completely through the needle s eye!!!
