1 Wren Feathers Ponchos As always this pattern is by me (Jennie Bagrowski) and is for your personal use only, you MAY share it by linking to this blog, you may NOT sell it or upload it to any site without my permission. If you downloaded this elsewhere it was stolen from: Quarter inch seams allowed on all pieces unless otherwise specified. I assume you have basic sewing knowledge and the explanation should suffice, but if you need help please me! You can easily adapt these ponchos for any doll! If you re not a weaver, check resale or import stores for appropriate fabric, like a scarf, belt, placemat, etc. you can cut to the proper size and hem. You can also often find trim or ribbon that looks handwoven and zigzag it together to make the proper width. If you knit or crochet, it would be easy to adapt these instructions using rectangles you make that way. Incidentally, there s a pretty awesome doll-size rigid heddle loom here: that you could use to make a piece of plain weave fabric for this project too. 2 Making an Awayo The awayo is traditionally made from two lengths of woven fabric, with a seam up the center front and back. This one is open a bit more in back to facilitate getting it on and off the doll. When you re measuring, it should fall about mid-thigh and be wide enough to stand out a little from the shoulders, and then allow for fringe if you d like. For my Nancy, the fabric strips were about 3 wide and 13 long, plus about an additional inch of fringe on either end.

3 Unless you hand-wove and hemstitched, put in a row of zigzags or straight stitching where you want the fringe to begin. Use scrap yarn to sew up the front edge, starting at the bottom. I just whipstitched, but sometimes this seam is covered with decorative stitching. Try it on the doll and mark where it needs to stop. My seam was 4.5. For ties in the back, thread extra yarn through on both sides just above the waist and twist or braid it into a cord long enough to tie into a bow. Remove weft threads to make fringe. Steam or wet them if necessary to remove texture.

4 Put the poncho on the doll and sew up about an inch at the bottom if desired. Make sure it s still easy to get on and off over her head! You may want to omit this if making for a child or if the doll has a really big head in relation to her body. Twist or braid extra yarn to use as a belt to help keep it in place for a look authentic to 1970s Nancys, or sew snaps under the arms for a look authentic to people-size awayos.

5 Making a Quechquemitl The quechquemitl also uses two rectangles, but they re placed at a 90 degree angle for a different look. Zigzag and make fringe as for the awayo, and lay them out as shown. You can have the extra fringe to the inside or outside as desired.

6 Hand sew with scrap yarn or topstitch by machine. These pix show outside (L) and inside (R) views. Try on doll and adjust fit at front. You ll need to use snap closures, placed where you see red dots in the photo on (R). If you have a lovely scrap of wool or slightly felted old sweater or something like that, I also included a pattern for another type of poncho, also based on a Nancy 1970s one.
