Christmas / Winter Contest 2009 Below you will find the wonderful entries in our Christmas/Winter Contest on our BFC Yahoo Group. ( A photo for each of the Entries is below. The words of the entrants are included with each photo giving a brief description of how they made their block, and in some how they plan to use their creation, or have used it already. CHRISTMAS AND WINTER CONTEST The Christmas and Winter Contest began Friday, October 23, 2009 and ended January 15, We had a wonderful member participation with 893 votes cast. Any project expressing the Christmas or Winter Season was eligible for Entry. A BFC-Creations Design had to be used but a design from some where else if needed to complete the project was acceptable. PRIZES: Christmas and Winter Contest: First prize: $200 in Club 100 credits to spend on BFC designs Entry 9 Second and Third prizes: $100 in Club 100 credits to spend on designs Entry 16 Entry 3 Fourth and Fifth prizes: $50 in Club 100 credits to spend on designs Entry 14 Entry 11 Congratulations to all the Winners and Entrants. Suz
Entry 1 Jan Bean This is an entry for the Christmas/Winter Contest. It was done using all freebees. They are: FBFC Victorian Wreath FBFC Christmas Village FBFC QIH Stocking FBFC QIH Stocking FBFC Christmas Postcards FBFC FSL Floral FBFC Christmas Bling I digitized a border using a "needle" design done in triangles. The designs were inserted then sewn out. I made templates and did the sewing in 3 hoopings. The fabric is a red velvet and I added Swarovski crystals - scattered around the finished design. It is framed in a 16x20 frame. A very simple design but truly one of a kind. 2
Entry 2 Anne Goligher I used the candles for the Christmas designs. These designs were on the freebie design page also added some crystals for a little bling. Dark green cotton and medium weight stabilizer 3
Entry 3 Audrey Lochansky Third Place Designs used were Snowflake from FBFC 387 Winter Fantasy, and Tree from FBFC 175 Victorian Santa Wreath. The Gold Scroll design is FBFC113, but I couldn't find the original design under that number. In addition to BFC freebies I added the little star on top of the Christmas Tree cut from a free design I had in my folder, and the Happy Holidays were from the monogramming part of my embroidery machine. I used a white cotton fabric for the background and one layer of tear away stabilizer. Each design was embroidered following QIH instructions that came with a design set. Not sure if the metallics show up in the photo, but I used a silver metallic instead of white behind the snowflakes and again replacing the colored strings on the tree with the silver metallic. Gold metallic was used for the entire design on the scrolls. A Candy Cane Fabric was used for the sashing around the embroidery. 4
Entry 4 Diana LeBherz BFC-781 Poinsettia Windows was stitched on one piece of fabric. I used a medium broadcloth/twill black fabric with a cut away stabilizer for high density designs. I embellished the center bracts of the flower with crystals and used gold metallic on sections of the musical notes. The frame is really matte black, but I am assuming the flash from the camera caused the gloss effect... 5
Entry 5 Jean Puffer BFC351 Santa's Sleigh Ride My name is Jean Puffer and I am from Chilliwack, BC Canada. The entry I am submitting is using the BFC351 design Santa's Sleigh Ride. I embroidered on cotton fabric. I used 505 spray to attach my batting and then embroidered. I did not hoop. I 505 sprayed it to medium weight tear away stabilizer. 6
Entry 6 Sandy Radtke Sometimes I make things from designs and some times from the fabric. This was a combination. Had the new Christmas bling I had bought and wanted to use them so went looking for Christmas fabric. I usually use tradition Christmas fabric like reds and greens but had this wonderful blue poinsetta in my stash and decided this was perfect. Found the other fabric in my stash and was going to do the designs in silver but decided wouldn't show up well so blue thread was perfect. Since the designs from Christmas bling and the free bling you gave us were not dense used just one layer of tear away with the fairy frost. I love the look! Here they are
Entry 7 Frieda Grischkowsky I used BFC and from the Swirly Bling collection to make a frame around the red work Santa. I stitched this on cream colored cotton that has metallic gold flecks in it - a fabric I kept using over the years for Christmas projects, and now - sadly - it is completely used up! I used one layer of water soluble tear away. I quilted a loopy design in the outer border, and stipple quilted the background. 8
Entry 8 Doreen Huston I used BFC909 Stained Glass Joseph, Mary and the Infant Jesus set. I used black medium weight cotton with medium weight Tear away stabilizer on the bottom and water soluble film on the top in my hoop. The majority of thread used was the Admelody Rayon colors suggested. I stitched out each block separately and then joined them after stitching. I then added the gold inner border and a black outer border, sandwiched the front with fusible batting and a backing and finished it envelope style, stitching about 5/8 inch in from the outside to create a bound affect. I then did some stitching in the ditch to stabilize the whole project for hanging. Made a lovely frontal for the lectern for the Christmas services at church 9
Entry 9 Renee Nelson First Place For my entry in the Christmas/Winter contest I chose BFC499 Christmas Time and BFC919 Swirly Bling for my designs. Using 4D Pro and a design from BFC499 Christmas Time I created a circle of poinsettias which I stitched on black Fairy Frost cotton and then framed with a narrow band of red cotton with gold highlights. The next border showcases a swirly bling design in gold metallic on black. I also stitched 4 large poinsettias (minus leaves) from BFC499 on a double layer of red organza, cut them out and tacked them in the 4 corners. A poinsettia cotton print border completes my entry. It was embroidered and quilted with my Husqvarna Diamond. 10
Entry 10 Nancy J Bugby My entry is BFC775-QIH Bell Pull-Stained Glass Nativity. I embroidered it on Black Kona Cotton using the colors recommended. I used Michael Miller Fairy Frost in gold for the back and border. I also used a gold cord around the design with a gold button at the bottom with a tassel. 11
Entry 11 Marsha Lemmons Fifth Place It's my stitch out of the BFC810 Winter Sunset. I stitched it for a Christmas gift for my uncle but my husband liked it & took it! Now I'll have to make the companion piece (BFC911 Winter Sunrise)... I used white cotton fabric for the stitch out with 2 layers of tear away stabilizer. Double matted it with black & white & then decided it needed something, so added the lavender picot ribbon trim. Hope you like it, 12
Entry 12 Lorraine Morrow Santa s Ride Lace bowl and doily BFC349 I used one layer of WSS. It looks as good from inside or outside. On the outside I added crystals in the centre of the stars they don t show up in photo. 13
Entry 13 Gail Wooden I used BFC 781. I mounted the window designs onto black felt with peltex backing. Since I rent this home I did not want to put nail holes in wall so I used "Command" strips which attached right to the peltex backing and does not leave a mark on the wall. My 14
Entry 14 Nancy Shepherd Fourth Place BFC 647 sewn on linen fabric. The fabric is backed by an iron on interfacing and then a medium tear away stabilizer was used. The door colors were not sewn. This was hooped 12 times on one large piece of fabric. 15
Entry 15 Sandy Catala Here is my entry for the Christmas/Winter contest BFC-798 I decided to try another use for the Santas on transport postcard designs BFC798. I chose design 07 from that set to embellish a shopping bag. First I embroidered the design on quilter s cotton using a med stabilizer and changed the colors a bit to what I had on hand. Then I modified two snowflake mini tree ornaments so they would lay flat and glued them to the fabric as well as clear rhinestones to give the effect of a little snow falling. I also used blue rhinestones for his eyes and yellow on the headlight. I then tried my first attempt at appliqué using a monogram stitch built into my Ellageo. Used 505 to place and then stitched to the bag. 16
Entry 16 Donna Haas Second Place This is BFC 669 stitched on royal blue twill, backed by medium weight tear away stabilizer. I used all Metro threads and matched colors the best I could 17
