Such a precious little wreath just had to have a name, so I gave it one:. With her Michigan heritage, Gay loves all things Cherry, and I decided she needed this wreath named for her. One of my professors told me I could teach calculus to an intellectually challenged child by breaking it down into small manageable pieces. So it is with. We re going yo just break it down into small pieces/sections! Order of stitching for this block: 1) Stems for cherries 2) Stems for sprigs and leaves 3) Wreath The leaves and cherries may be added as you complete their stems or after all stems are stitched. I stitched mine as I went. Wait to stitch the leaves by the wreath until the wreath is stitched down Copyright 2014

5 Just Takes 2 - Benjamin Biggs Stems: Cut one 10 inch square; stems cut on bias cut 4-5 strips one-half inch wide for cherries cut remainder of square into 3/4 inch bias strips My block is back basted except for the stems. I found they were just too small for me to turn under a seam allowance. If you are new to back basting or if you want to try it, Gay has a tutorial on her website Back basting isn t for every project, but it s my favorite method for these blocks. Note: If you are back basting, remember to mirror image your pattern. I haven t done that, so my patterns are all reversed. I always draw over my back basting with a pencil or Pigma pen. 6 Just Takes 2 - Benjamin Biggs Stems Press bias strips in half lengthwise, wrong sides together Press in half again, trying to keep the raw edge under your fold; you don t want it to show The black lines are the folded stem fabric. The red line is the center of the stem. B You will stitch the stem along the center, matching the INNER CURVE A of the drawn stem line on the back of your background. A When I first started, I basted just the background so I would have a line on the front to help with placement of the stem. Then I started drawing it on the front. I also basted the background with along the inside curve. Try these methods and see which is best for you. Repeat: Stitch your stem along the center, matching the INNER CURVE A of the drawn stem line on the back of your background. Use small stitches, turn work around and stitch along the same line. This competes the stitching on the inner curve, and you are ready to fold the stem to the outside curve. Now complete stitching the stem by appliquéing the outside curve. NOTE: Make certain you leave enough stem to be hidden under the leaves or stem that go over it. Trust me on this: you don t want to take out a stem because the raw edge shows when you put a leaf over it. You can always trim it off, but you can t add it. As, we Janiacs say, cut it big and whack it off. Cherries Baste using very small stitches. I then use a circle template and draw on the right side with a Pigma pen. It isn t necessary, but I like the insurance. As you stitch these little cherries, you will almost be turning with every stitch. To prevent points along the cherry line, work the seam allowance. If it has a crease in it, it will cause a point on your cherry. To prevent a bump on your cherry, make stitches closer together. You can always put your needle between the stitches and smooth out the curve, even after the cherry is completed. Just one at a time, and soon they will all be complete, pretty and round!
