The clever placement of light and dark patches blends together so beautifully that block edges are blurred, and the outer pieced border makes a subtle frame. A fun technique for making the half-square triangle units will speed you along to a satisfying finish. All measurements are cut sizes and include 4" seam allowances. A fat ¼ is an 18" x 20"-22" cut. WOF designates the width of fabric from selvedge to selvedge (approximately 42" wide). 3 Making the Quilt 1. The blocks and pieced border are made with half-square triangle units (HST) that finish 2" square. Use your favorite method to make HST, such as half-square triangle paper. If you wish to piece HST in the traditional method, cut 3" squares in half diagonally, stitch a light and a medium triangle together, and trim to 22" square. Read the rest of Step 1 for the number of HST to make. 6" = = Diagram 1 Diagram 2 8x Trim to 22" Diagram 3 HST finish 2" HST Technique: These directions result in a set of 8 HST alike. Draw diagonal lines in both directions on the wrong side of the light print 6" squares and Fabric A 6" squares (Diagram 1). Position a marked square on top of a medium print square with right sides together. Sew a 4" seam on each side of both marked diagonal lines. Use a ruler to cut the squares in half vertically and horizontally (shown in red on the diagram). Be sure that your rotary cutter goes through the exact center of the 6" square. This results in 4 squares 3" x 3". Cut each 3" square along the drawn diagonal line to make 8 HST (Diagram 2). Press the seam allowance to the medium fabric. Trim each square to 22" (Diagram 3). Repeat with all 6" squares to make a total of 1,084 HST. A few HST will be leftover. Hint: Set aside 60 HST made with Fabric A and medium prints. They will be used in the pieced border described in Step Referring to the Block diagram, join 16 different HST in 4 rows of 4 HST each, turning the HST to make the design as shown. Press the seam allowances in opposite directions in adjacent rows. Join the rows. Press seam allowances open. Make a total of 64 blocks like this. The blocks should measure 82" square. 3. Referring to the Quilt Diagram, sew 4 blocks together in 2 rows of 2 blocks each to make a 4-block unit. Make 16 block units. They should measure 162" square. HST Block Make Join the block units into 4 rows of 4 units each. Press seam allowances in opposite directions in adjacent rows. Join the rows. Press seam allowances open. 5. To make the pieced border, sew 2 of the Fabric A/medium HST together side by side, referring to the Quilt Diagram for placement. Make 28 HST units like this. Join 7 units alternately with 6 Fabric A 42"-long rectangles. Sew a Fabric A 62"-long rectangle to each end. Make 4 borders like this. Sew pieced borders to opposite sides of the quilt. Sew a Fabric A/medium HST to ends of remaining borders, rotating as shown. Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt. Finishing the Quilt 6. Layer the quilt with batting and backing and baste.
