FAT QUARTER NEWS Editor: Kathleen Ritzman MARCH 2014 NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT Thank you to the Membership Committee for doing a great job with the roster this year. If you haven t picked up your new one yet, please contact GayLynn Roth and arrange to pick it up as mailing all the rest is not in the budget. Maybe a friend can pick it up for you?? There was a terrific Silent Auction at the last meeting and several found some great bargains to help us avoid running out of fabric and patterns. Thanks to the Program Committee for setting up this activity. You missed some great deals if you weren t there. Next Quilt Guild Meeting: MARCH 13 1:00 pm We have a New Logo Committee that is developing ideas to be ready for the Guild s 25th Anniversary. Our first logo has served us well and we want to thank Linda Goebel for creating it. The Board approved selecting a new logo last month. Susan Cronenwett, chairperson, will be refining ideas in the next several months. If you have any input, feel free to contact Susan or anyone on the Logo Committee: Linda Goebel, Becky Merchon, Judy McCoy, Jean Amundson, Kathleen Ritzman, and me. Thank you to all the Committees for giving up some of your time to help the Guild. Our March 13 Guild Meeting will feature a discussion of the term, Modern Quilting. Who s modern? What s modern? Christina Cameli will share her thoughts on controversies that sometimes arise in the discussion of modern quilting, and some perspective on how modern quilts tie into the tradition of quilting that stretches across time. Signing up doesn t affect your FM rewards or rebates; the donation goes from FM to Samaritan House. The Samaritan House ID number is We know your contributions would be welcome! The Samaritan House has a website; check it out: Judy Niemeyer Pre-Workshop Mini Class Are you getting very frustrated doing your preparation for the Judy Niemeyer Workshop? If so, there will be a short mini-class before the next Guild Meeting (March 13) at 12 Noon. I will try to show you how I did my cutting and sorting, and answer any questions you might have. You can also get info and short videos at Judy s website: Quiltworx.com. Go to the pattern you have chosen and on the lower right hand side bar, look under techniques used and watch the videos there. JanniLou Creations has planned a great workshop and I think we will all learn a lot. ~Ginger Dale JUNE WORKSHOP: PIECING GENTLE CURVES by Karla Alexander FRIDAY, JUNE 13 9:30 AM 4:30 PM You ll learn a variety of methods from cutting and sewing free-form bent lines, to perfect quarter-inch tricks, to tips on color choices, as well as a variety of cutting and sewing methods that will be an added bonus to your bag of quilt tricks! Even if you ve never sewn a curve before, you will be surprised how awesome your blocks will be! Build your quilt one block at a time, taking time to evaluate your choices as you go. Karla will guide you through the cutting process, teaching you a free-form method as well as how to use her rulers. While purchasing the rulers is optional, they will provide you with a perfect cut every time. Cost of the workshop is $52 + cost of the pattern. See Guild Website for colored images of the patterns.

Block of the Month Fourteen members picked up the packet for the January Times Square block, but only eight members turned theirs in at our February 13th Meeting. One member chose to make four blocks, and several of the blocks had the crystal ball applique. Benita Goodheart was the winner of the drawing, but she did not pick up her blocks, so I will have them for her at the March meeting. Twenty members picked up the February Candy Box Heart packet and I expect to receive the majority of those completed at our March 13th Meeting. Because one member requested that I mail a packet to her, I need to remind us all of the procedure for mailing BOM packets: You will need to provide the BOM Chair with a self-addressed and stamped envelope of sufficient size to accommodate the 6 x11 BOM packet. I mailed one such envelope to a member in Florence, and the postage was $1.12. The BOM for March is titled Shades of Shamrock and 18 members have signed up to receive that packet. The packets will include the design on freezer paper for paper-piecing, and a blended green fabric swatch from which to make the shamrocks. The background and border will come from your personal stash. When members turn in their completed blocks, please return any unused fabric which we have provided. This fabric is purchased with the BOM Budget, and I may choose to utilize unused fabric in future blocks. As mentioned previously, you may choose to make more than one block, and you will receive one chance to win all returned blocks for each block you submit. Thank you for your participation and patience in getting me up to speed. ~Lorne Pleger, BOM Chairman DOCUMENTATION Our first Documentation session this year is Saturday, March 22 at the Carriage House in Newport. We still have openings on the schedule. If you have quilts you would like to have documented or have non-quilting friends who own quilts, please call Velma Freudenthal, ( ) or Evelyn De Paola ( ) to make an appointment. The only criterion is that the quilt must be owned by a Lincoln County resident. Be sure to give us a call if you think documenting quilts sounds as fun as we think it is and would like to join our team. To All Retreat Friends: WOW!! Thank you for the very generous gift certificate and gifts. I am very humbled and overwhelmed. Thanks so much! Another incredible surprise was a wonderful package of fabrics from all the retreat bus travelers. Ladies, thank you so much! You will see parts of several of them in the Garden Gate project I started at the retreat. I have gems which are precious, but quilter friends are priceless!!! Thank you all! ~Rose Shaw

Minutes of General Membership Meeting FEBRUARY 13, 2014 The meeting was called to order by President Jane Szabo at 6:30 PM. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Velma Freudenthal announced that the next Quilt documentation will be March 22. Also there is an exhibit of antique quilts from the collection of Aron Rothstein at the North Lincoln County Historical Museum showing through February 21. Gaylynn Roth reported 63 members in attendance with one guest/new member: Beth Nicholson. PROGRAM Karen Donobedian presented our Silent Auction with tables overflowing with quilting-related items for our bids. After our lively auction, Jean Maupin presented gift bags to the retreat organizers as a thank you from all the attendees at the successful January Retreat. DRAWINGS: Quilter s Surprise/Nifty Notions winners were Jennifer Reinhart, Gloria Zirges, and Jeanne Butler. Block of the Month Benita Goodheart won this month s blocks. S.A.B.L.E. Heart fabrics were won by Jan Hoffman and Beverly Ohngren. The color for next month s fabrics will be Green. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Programs/Workshops: Judy McCoy announced a bonus workshop to be presented in May by Florence Roberts. Community Service: Donated quilts included 6 from Lincoln City and 18 from Leta s Legacy. Quilt Show: Julia Bailey informed us that there are lots of slots open to volunteer for various Quilt show Committees. SABLE: March Fabrics will be Green. Jane also announced that we will be the Featured Guild at next summer's NW Quilter s Expo and would like about 40 quilts to show from our Guild members. SHOW AND SHARE session followed and included the finished Raffle Quilt top for next year. CLOSING ANNOUNCEMENTS The meeting was adjourned by Jane at 8:15 PM. Respectfully submitted, Shirley Kemnitz, Secretary ============================================= Minutes of OCQG Executive Board Meeting February 20, 2014 CALL TO ORER The meeting was called to order at 10:00 AM by President Jane Szabo. The January minutes were corrected to show that the once per year $10 discount for workshops is for Board Committee members and Quilt Show Committee Members. The corrected minutes were then approved with a motion by Joan, seconded by Virginia. The Treasurer s report was accepted as submitted, with Pat noting that there are $ left in the Retreat Fund, with one bill still outstanding. OLD BUSINESS Logo: Judy reported that Susan Cronenwett has assembled a sampling of logos from other quilt guilds for the Logo Committee to compare and consider with the goal of having a new logo for our Guild ready by December. Wireless mic: Judy called two different vendors regarding our need for a wireless mic system, and both recommended the same equipment: the Shure Lavaliere Wireless System. Both vendors quoted a price of $299. Virginia made a motion to spend $299 on the system as researched by Judy, seconded by Joan, passed unanimously. Outreach Fund Motion was made by Virginia and seconded by Cindy that we table the subject of the Outreach Fund at this time. We will solicit ideas from the membership for appropriate quilting-related recipients of our donation. NEW BUSINESS Audit: Karen presented the audit report and commended the Treasurer and Committee members on the documentation and record-keeping. Shari passed around a Fiscal Responsibilities handout with guidelines for receipts and reimbursements. February Meeting Time Change Request Karen suggested that the February meeting be changed to a daytime meeting because of the probability of poor weather/driving conditions, and perhaps the September or May meeting could be changed to night 9(o keep the balance of meetings at 6 daytime meetings and 6 nighttime meetings). After much discussion, it was decided that the Board would look at past monthby-month attendance records and then present our recommendation to the membership. NW Quilting Expo Committee: Jane Szabo, Virginia Dale, Lisa Taylor, Kathleen Ritzman, and Susan Cronenwett.

COMMITTEE REPORTS Block of the Month: Clarification that those wanting the block mailed to them should pay for the postage and envelope. Challenge 2014: Joan reported that there are some really good ideas being mentioned for the Which Witch Challenge. Community Service: Norma has been working on baby changing pads which have been well-received. Documentation: First Documentation of the year will be March 22. Finance: Janet reported that the prices quoted for printing the raffle tickets were $503 for 4,000 tickets and $596 for 5,000 tickets. Joan made a motion that we purchase $5500 tickets and the selling price be $1 each OR 6 tickets for $5. Seconded by Jackie, and passed by vote. Benita Goodheart, winner of February BOM. Hostess/Hospitality: The May meeting will have snacks/finger food. Sign-ups will be posted in advance. Membership: Present membership is 179. Programs/workshops: The deposit system seems to be working. Also, in the future, if there are not enough people signed up for a particular workshop, the committee leaders plan to work on renegotiating the contract with the presenter rather than simply cancelling the workshop. Projects Anonymous: Meets at the Carriage House from 10:00 AM 4:00 PM. (Lunch is at 12:00) on the 4th Thursday of the month Raffle Quilt: The top is finished and the quilter will be decided upon by the committee. Retreat 2015: The Committee Members are Nan Scott, Rose Shaw, Virginia Dale, and Joan Johnson. Nan has reserved space at the Oregon Garden Resort for the same time in January of 2015 for the Guild Retreat, with admission to the Stitches in Bloom Quilt Show to be included. There is also a weather-related cancellation clause in the contract allowing us to reschedule within 90 days. Nan presented a plan to have 600 tickets printed to be sold for $2 each to raffle off the Permutations Quilt pieced by the 2014 Retreat attendees, with the proceeds to be used for three retreat scholarships or for some other retreat-related enhancement. After further discussion, Nan made the motion, seconded by Joan, that the Board allow 600 tickets to be ordered for the raffle of the Retreat Quilt and also be allowed to sell the tickets at the Quilt Show in the Membership area. The motion was passed.: SABLE: Green for March. INFORMATION-ANNOUNCEMENT-ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 11:55 A.M. Rose Shaw & Virginia Dale show appreciation for gift bags Jennifer Reinhart, one of Quilter s Surprise winners. Respectfully submitted, Shirley Kemnitz, Secretary

Small Quilt Auction at Our Quilt Show Guild Members have already been thinking about what they can create and donate to our guild s Small Quilt Auction. In fact, some small quilts have already been submitted! This project raises money for the Guild and a charity. Here s how it works: Make a small quilt (wall hanging, usually) that you think would sell to Quilt Show guests who bid on the creations in a silent auction. That s all! Do your best work on the project of course helps them sell). The Small Quilt Auction Committee (Knotty Ladies this year) will ask each participant to name a 501-3C charity. These names will be placed into a pot and at some point before the Show, the name of one charity is drawn. Then one-half of all monies raised by the auction will go to that charity and one-half goes to the guild. So get your creative juices flowing and create something sweet. You can expect to hear more about this at our meetings, but we wanted to give you plenty of advance notice. Check out these great patterns for the June Workshop with Karla Alexander! Savanna Argyle

An Entry for our Small Quilt Auction at the Show Lisa Taylor s most recent Long-arm Quilted Project The applique flowers are beautiful! Rose Shaw s Retreat Project It was difficult to make a choice at the Guild Auction. All kinds of quilt-related items were available at the March Quilt Auction.

Save the date January 25 28, 2015! Quilting in the Garden OCQG Retreat January 26-29, 2014 In late January, 52 guild members and 6 relatives and friends gathered for retreat together at the Oregon Garden Resort. We attended the Stitches in Bloom quilt show in the garden, worked on our favorite projects in a spacious comfortable well-lighted room. Tasty meals were served right across the hall at round tables with two seatings to allow us to get to know each other better. There were optional demonstrations and workshops. No one went hungry with healthy veggie snacks, chocolate, nuts, and warm cookies straight from the oven every afternoon. Our accommodations were cozy and comfortable - each room with a private out- door patio and a gas fire place. The Spa, restaurant, and lounge with live music every night were just down the hall. We all had such a good time that the decision was unanimous Let s come back next year! So set aside $1/day starting now and you will have it covered when it is time to pay. Sixty people is the limit and priority will be given to guild members first. We will start taking signups at the April meeting. There will be a $50 non-refundable deposit to reserve your space, so start clearing your calendar now January JOIN THE FUN!
