Topics What is geocoding? Why would you use geocoding? How does geocoding work? APIGeocoder & geocoding results. How are address data organized? How you can use geocoded data. Using geocoded data with GIS. Examples of GIS queries. Illustrative GIS & geocoded data applications. 3
What is Geocoding? Geocoding is the process of determining and assigning latitude-longitude coordinates for address data. Address data may be one address or a file of addresses. Geocoding results are a means to an end. Normally geocoding results are used with a Geographic Information System (GIS). Geocoding software is required to geocode an address. Many types of geocoding software and services are available. APIGeocoder is a resource developed by ProximityOne. About APIGeocoder: /apigeocoder.htm 4
Why would you use Geocoding? Once addresses are geocoded, the address location can be shown as a marker on a map for visual applications. The map at right shows a school (an address) as a green marker in context of other geography. Our ability to show the address as a point location on a map is enabled by geocoding the address. 5
How does Geocoding work? Collect the address data. Organize address data into a file. The address file is processed by geocoding software. APIGeocoder determines the road segment containing the address The latitude-longitude of the road segment end points are known (part of TIGER/Line Digital Map Database) The latitude-longitude location of the address is computed from the road segment coordinate data. The latitude-longitude is assigned to the address. The address record is updated with the L-L values. 6
How does Geocoding work? APIGeocoder uses the Census Bureau TIGER/Line layers and optionally the Proximity Digital Map Database 7
How Geocoding works there s more The Latitude-Longitude is an important result of geocoding. APIGeocoder also returns the Geocodes for selected geographies. The geographies on the correct side of the road segment. For example, the census block, congressional district, school district APIGeocoder also returns selected subject matter attributes. Characteristics of the block group in which the address is located. For example, median household income, median housing value Geocodes and subject matter items are output to original address record. 8
How are Address Data Organized? Address data should consist of separate fields/columns. Typically an address record would include: ID Name Street Address City Name ZIP Code 9
Geocoding One Address With address loaded, click CodeOne button. Geocoded results section populates. Review output. 10
Geocoding an Address File Open an address file addr2.dbf illustrated. Click BatchCode button. Review output on right. 11
Geocoded Address File Open geocoded output file addr2.dbf illustrated. Two records in this file. Using CV XE GIS Viewer. Census block geocode shown at far right. 12
Using a GIS to Display Geocoded Data San Diego, CA vicinity How do client locations relate to patterns of economic prosperity by neighborhood? Census tracts by median household income Markers show client locations of a bank Display of markers enabled by geocoding. Geocoded data are converted to shapefile. 13
Combining Point, Line & Polygon Geography San Diego, CA vicinity GIS application showing illustrative bank branch locations (markers/points), bank branch service areas (solid fill pattern polygons), San Diego city area (cross-hatched fill pattern) Layers showing in map window that are checked in legend panel 14
Viewing Geocoded Data in Context San Diego vicinity La Jolla Customers (geocoded data) shown as markers. Locate/show business data on various types of map displays, such as thematic and point density. Thematic displays are colored by area Colors are used to display the ranges of data values Show patterns in data at levels such as region, state, county, metro, zip code 15
Using Geocoded Data Point density displays show the actual spatial distributions of data on a map. The view at right shows customers as points/markers (geocoded data). Points (geocoded data) can be colored or sized according to selected data values Points can be shown on maps with geographic features (roads, rivers, boundary lines, etc.) 16
Using Geocoded Data GIS layers allow users to change displays without revising the data Show any desired boundaries or features Alter data ranges, legends, colors, etc. View at right shown by changing attributes of Branch Areas layer and then clicking on $MHI by tract layer (relative to previous slide view). Powerful Zoom and Drill Down Features Go from national/regional to individual points Drill down to granular data underlying all points and areas 17
Using Geocoded Data Examining alternative new bank branch locations Install CV XE GIS /cv.htm Install California by neighborhood GIS project /dmi/ca1.htm Zoom to San Diego area Add layers separately developed Branch locations (point shapefile) Branch service areas (polygon shapefile) Customers for La Jolla branch service area (point shapefile) Possible new bank branch locations Graphic at right shows start-up view; three bank branch service areas, bank branch locations, OpenStreetMap base layer 18
Examining viewing lay of the land Layers added Branch locations (point shapefile) Branch service areas (polygon shapefile) Customers for La Jolla branch service area (point shapefile) Possible new bank branch locations 19
Examining how are customers distributed? Zoom-in View Shows customers for La Jolla branch service area (orange/brown fill pattern) Use of select/identify tool to view mini-profile for one customer (see pointer) 20
Examining using site analysis tools: customers How many customers? View shows new bank branch location options (blue dots) How many customers are within 1 mile of a location (see circle)? There are 58 customers of a selected customer type (see count at right) Selected customers shown with cross-hatch in map view. More about Site Analysis. 21
Examining using site analysis tools: customer potential How many potential customers at new locations; sales/income potential? View shows new location options (blue dots) What is the population in tracts within 1 mile of a location (see circle)? 50,000+ total population in this area (see count at right) Selected tracts shown with cross-hatch. More about Site Analysis. 22
Develop wide-ranging GIS applications Create maps like the one at right Wichita, KS Elem School Attendance Zones (SAZ) A query is applied to show only Wichita school district (bold black boundary) Patterns of median household income by SAZ; see $MHI intervals by color in legend left of map Elementary schools shown as blue markers; school district: black boundary A query is used to show only elementary SAZs; all SAZ boundaries (eg, ES, MS, HS) are maintained. More about this application 23
Related Topics Geocoding Enables assigning latitude-longitude to customer addresses Geocoding used to develop customer shapefile & locations shapefiles GPS Enables setting points (latitude-longitude) that can define a line or service area TIGER/Line & Digital Map Database Enables viewing boundaries of cities and census tracts Road detail; base for geocoding Site Analysis Enables selection of geographic objects for aggregation Used to count customer in an area selected visually Used to aggregate population by tract for tracts selected visually 24
GIS Resources You Can Use Mapping Neighborhood Patterns... visual analysis of geographic-demographic-economic patterns by census tract; add your own data Choose any state /neighborhood_patterns.htm Example: Missouri GIS project start-up view shown at right Getting started here: /dmi/modmi.htm Follow easy step-by-step instructions 25
ProximityOne resources to create & apply insight a visual example of a thematic pattern view of median household income ($MHI) by Census 2010 block group developed using GIS software subject matter data integrated into block group shapefile. view is located in the Kansas City metro but could be anywhere in the world. $MHI block group thematic pattern layer superimposed on a MapQuest OpenStreetMap layer used as a base layer schools shown as triangular markers add other wide-ranging geography and subject matter to the view. ProximityOne specializes in developing and integrating diverse independent geographic-demographic-economic-business data into dynamic GIS applications for collaboration and decision-making.
