About The Course Course title: Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Lectures: ED202, 13:20~15:10(Mon.), 9:00~9:50(Thur.) Pre-requisites: Computer programming skills in C/C++. Basic data structures and algorithms. E.g. multi-dimensional arrays, linked lists, sorting, and so forth.

About The Course Teacher: I-Chen Lin ( 林奕成 ) ichenlin@cs.nctu.edu.tw Office: EC 704 Research interests: computer graphics, computer vision, image-based and interactive 3D modeling, motion capture

About The Course (cont.) TAs: 吳立楨 林軍揚 Office: EC 229b, 237 Phone ext.: 56676, Course web page:

Human-Computer Interaction Human the end-user of a program the others in the organization Computer the machine the program runs on often split between clients & servers Interaction the user tells the computer what they want the computer communicates results

What is HCI? Task Organizational & Social Issues Design Technology Humans

User Interfaces (UIs) Part of applications that allow people to interact with the computer system to carry out their tasks They face the users directly, but get relatively little attention in early IT projects.

Why Study User Interfaces? Major part of work for real programs approximately 50% Real software is intended for people other than project developers. Bad user interfaces cost money (5% satisfaction -> up to 85% profits) Lives User interfaces are hard to get right without iterative procedures.

HCI An appropriate process of interfaces: Design Prototyping Evaluation implementation (of UIs)
