1 CIRRUS SR22 Service Bulletin Number: Issued: Revised: October 13, 2009 SNS SUBJECT: ICE PROTECTION - AIRFOIL - Porous Panel Vent Inspection 1. COMPLIANCE Recommended: Accomplish this Service Bulletin at the next scheduled maintenance, annual inspection, or within the next 100 flight hours, whichever occurs first. Compliance time begins upon receipt of this Service Bulletin. This Service Bulletin has been revised to ensure functionality of the porous panel vents through expanded instruction eliminating potential obstruction of porous panel vent tube(s) by sealant. Also, effectivity has been expanded. Operators who have successfully complied with the Original or Revisions 1 or 2 of this Service Bulletin, must complete this Service Bulletin (Revision 3) in its entirety. 2. EFFECTIVITY. 3. APPROVAL FAA approval has been obtained on all technical data in this Service Bulletin that affects type design. 4. PURPOSE A condition was recently discovered where on some aircraft, the porous panel vents at the outboard end of the inboard wing panels were obstructed by sealant. The purpose of the vents is to assist in removing air from the porous panels after periods of non-use. If a panel vent is sealed, the air inside the reservoir can not generally be removed by the operating pressure of the metering pumps. During subsequent operations, this trapped air prevents the panel from wetting-out completely or requires greater time to wet-out (typically 5 minutes). 5. DESCRIPTION This Service Bulletin contains instructions for inspecting the porous panel vents for sealant obstruction, removal of sealant if necessary, and verifying proper functionality of the inboard wing panel vents. 6. WARRANTY INFORMATION For aircraft under warranty at the issue date of this Service Bulletin, Cirrus Design will cover all parts and labor costs for this Service Bulletin if the work is accomplished within the Compliance time period and the work is performed at an authorized Cirrus Design Service Center. Operators who have successfully complied with the Original or Revisions 1 or 2 of this Service Bulletin should contact Cirrus Design Customer Service for warranty reimbursement. 7. MANPOWER REQUIREMENTS Procedure - Inspect Porous Panel Vent: 0.25 man-hour. Procedure - Porous Panel Sealant Repair (if required): 0.5 man-hour. Procedure - Porous Panel Vent Tube Clean-Out: 0.25 man-hour. Functional Test - Porous Panel Vent: 0.25 man-hour. Page 1

Set BAT 1, BAT 2, and AVIONICS switches to OFF positions. C. Perform Procedure - Inspect Porous Panel Vent. (1) Procedure - Inspect Porous Panel Vent (See Figure 01) (a) At outboard end of inboard wing porous panel, locate wing cuff finishing sealant. (b) Visually inspect porous panel vent and verify sealant does not obstruct vent on wing porous panel. Repeat on opposite wing. 1 If sealant is obstructing LH or RH porous panel vents, perform Procedure - Porous Panel Sealant Repair. 2 If sealant is not obstructing LH or RH porous panel vents, perform Procedure - Porous Panel Vent Tube Clean-Out. D. Procedure - Porous Panel Sealant Repair (See Figure 03) (1) Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies. Description P/N or Spec. Supplier Purpose Putty Knife (non-metallic) - Any Source Remove sealant. Scotch-Brite Scouring Pad M St. Paul, MN Prepare porous panel surface. Isopropyl Alcohol TT-I-735 Grade A or B Any Source General cleaning. Low Tack Masking Tape No M St. Paul, MN Protect porous panel and porous panel vent from contaminates. Sealant MIL-S-8802/ AMS-S-8802, Type II, Class B Any Source Seal wing cuff. CAUTION: Exercise caution to prevent cutting into wing cuff or damaging porous panel. (2) Use putty knife to remove finishing sealant from lower, outboard edge of inboard wing porous panel. (3) Using soap and water, remove anti-ice fluid from outboard end of inboard wing porous panel. (4) Cover fluid dispensing holes of porous panel with low tack masking tape to prevent contaminates. (5) Low tack masking tape must cover porous panel vent to prevent contamination by wing cuff finishing sealant. Page 2

3 (6) Mask sealant application area so that sealant will be visible along outboard edge of the inboard wing porous panel. (7) Using ultra-fine scouring pad, lightly abrade surface of sealant application area. (8) Wipe surface in one direction only to prevent smearing contaminates. For best results, wipe dry with clean white cloth in one direction only, while surface is still wet. (9) Using isopropyl alcohol, solvent clean sealant application area. (10) Apply thin layer of sealant to sealant application area. (11) Remove masking tape before sealant is fully cured. CAUTION: Do not elevate temperature of porous panel above 158 ºF (70 ºC) when curing sealant. (12) Cure sealant per manufacturer's instructions. (13) Perform Procedure - Porous Panel Vent Tube Clean-Out. E. Procedure - Porous Panel Vent Tube Clean-Out (See Figure 02) (1) Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies. Description P/N or Spec. Supplier Purpose Drill Bit (0.040-inch) #60 Any Source Clear vent obstruction. Safety Wire (0.015-inch) MS20995C15 Any Source Clear vent obstruction. Breakaway Wire (0.012-inch) ASTM B3 Any Source Clear vent obstruction. CAUTION: Note: Do not use powered drill to remove sealant from porous panel vent or vent tube. The porous panel vent is connected to a vent tube on aft side of panel. Excessive pressure may damage vent tube, requiring replacement of entire porous panel. It is permissible to use a drill chuck to facilitate support for drill bit, safety wire, or breakaway wire. (2) Remove any sealant obstructing porous panel vent by inserting and rotating drill bit by hand. Note: Due to tight bend in porous panel vent tube, clean-out wire routing is limited to approximately 3/4 inch (2 cm) in panel vent tube. Do not inadvertently break wire off inside of vent tube. (3) Remove any sealant obstructing vent tube by inserting and rotating wire by hand. (4) Perform Functional Test - Porous Panel Vent. F. Functional Test - Porous Panel Vent (1) Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies. Description P/N or Spec. Supplier Purpose Soap and Water Solution - Any Source Detect venting air. Note: At temperatures well above freezing, aircraft metering pump(s) may not provide adequate system pressure to wet-out entire length of porous panels. Page 3

4 Increasing system flow rate (MAX vs. NORM or MAX vs. HIGH) will increase arterial pressure of system which promotes complete wet-out of porous panels. (2) Set BAT 1 and BAT 2 power switches to ON. (3) Set ICE PROTECT mode switch to HIGH. (4) Set ICE PROTECT system switch to ON. (5) Visually inspect porous panel vent for proper functionality. Note: Initially, fluid may exit panel during system startup. This fluid was trapped between vent check valve and vent from previous operation, but may not be evident on panels if vent was obstructed by sealant. As panel fills, incoming ice protection fluid forces air inside panel to the highest point (check valve), through vent tube, and out of vent. (a) Use soap and water solution to confirm that air is released from vent. (b) Once panel is full and air is removed, verify fluid exits vent while system is operating. (c) Set ICE PROTECT system switch to OFF. (d) Set BAT 1 and BAT 2 power switches to OFF. (6) If porous panel vent is not functioning: (a) Repeat Procedure - Porous Panel Vent Tube Clean-Out. (b) Repeat Functional Test - Porous Panel Vent. (c) If porous panel vent is still not functioning, elevated pressure may help remove/release obstructions from the vent tube. 1 Perform Procedure - Porous Panel Purge. (Refer to SR22 AMM Temporary Revision 22AMM_TR_ or Reissue B or later of the SR22 AMM.) 2 If porous panel purge does not clear vent tube obstruction, contact Cirrus Design for disposition. G. Complete airplane records by noting compliance with in Aircraft Logbook. Page 4
