1 Annex CLAIRE CHIANG Senior Vice President Banyan Tree Holdings Co-founder Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts Ms. Claire Chiang, Senior Vice President, Banyan Tree Holdings, is a co-founder of Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts, a leading developer and manager of premium resorts, urban hotels and destination spas around the world. She pioneered the group s retail business in 1996 and has since overseen the launch of more than 60 retail outlets worldwide. As part of Banyan Tree s strategic focus on human capital development, Ms. Chiang assumed two new roles in 2010 chairperson for China Business Development, where she primarily focuses on the acquisition of new management contracts, and chairperson of the Human Capital Development Task Force, where she guides key strategic issues in organisational and human capital capability. Ms. Chiang is also the chairperson of Banyan Tree Global Foundation which was established in early 2009 by Banyan Tree Holdings. Her role involves directing and guiding the evolving process of the group s commitment to corporate social responsibility and its mission to Embrace the Environment, Empower the People. Ms. Chiang was an Arts and Social Sciences graduate (Honours) at the University of Singapore ( ), the present day National University of Singapore. During , Ms. Chiang worked at the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Hong Kong (presently the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong), while conducting intensive sociological fieldwork on factory workers and industrial relations in Hong Kong and completing her Master of Philosophy (Sociology) degree. From , she lectured in the Sociology Department of the National University of Singapore and continued research work in the Centre for Advanced Studies from 1990 to She co-authored the book Stepping Out: The Making of Chinese Entrepreneurs with Professor Chen Guo Ben which was published in l994 by Simon and Schuster and translated into Chinese and Japanese. The publication garnered a National Council Book Award and spawned a 30-chapter Chinese-language television drama in Singapore that won five broadcast awards. Ms. Chiang was one of the first two women in 89 years to be elected to the Board of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry and was awarded in 1999 as a Woman of the Year for her contribution to the community. She served as a Singapore Nominated Member of Parliament for two terms (l )
2 where she raised many policy issues related to the social service sector, women, family, education and the disadvantaged. In 2009, she was recognised by The International Alliance for Women World of Difference 100 Awards for championing village-based entrepreneurship. Ms. Chiang sits on many boards, including ACCORD (Family & Community Council), andtripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices (TAFEP). She is also a member of the Board of Governors of Raffles Girls Secondary School. She serves as a volunteer with Help Every Lone Parent (HELP),Rotary Club of Suntec City and also serves as a mentor for the Young Women s Leadership Connection mentorship programme. She was also appointed Director and Non-Executive Chairperson of Wildlife Reserves Singapore, and chairperson of Wildlife Reserves Singapore Conservation Fund. Wildlife Reserves Singapore under Temasek Holdings is the parent company of Jurong Bird Park, Night Safari, Singapore Zoo and the River Safari. In 2008, Ms. Chiang was awarded a Pingat Bakti Masyarakat (Public Service Medal) during Singapore s National Day Awards and was the inaugural Singapore Innovation Park Fellow Award. In the same year, she was formally appointed as a Justice of the Peace by Singapore President SR Nathan to exercise such powers and to perform such duties as may be conferred on them by any law. This was followed by her appointment to the Board of Visiting Justices in In April 2009, Ms. Chiang, together with Mr. Ho Kwon Ping, was a joint recipient of the Hospitality Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual China Hotel Investment Summit. The award was presented to honour outstanding individuals for a lifetime of extraordinary leadership, accomplishments and contributions to the hospitality industry. In 2011, Ms. Chiang introduced her biography, My Journey and After, a 768- page book in Chinese that profiles her journey as a woman from childhood through adulthood, marriage, motherhood, community engagement, politics and business. Written with notable Singaporean journalist Poon Sing Wah, My Journey is peppered with black-and-white and colour photography and Chinese calligraphy, and is an engaging, instructive read on Asian values, Singaporean history, and one woman s passage through various seminal phases of her life. On 31 July 2014, she was elected as the Chairperson of Executive Committee, National Book Development Council of Singapore. In Aug 2014, she was awarded the Public Service Star BBM for her contribution in implementing work-life integration, as part of Singapore s commitment to create fair, responsible and progressive work environment. Most recently on 27 Aug 2014, Ms. Chiang was elected as a Pioneering Member for the Diversity Action Committee to build up the representation of women directors on boards of companies.
3 PETER A. COCLANIS Albert Ray Newsome Distinguished Professor Director, Global Research Institute University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill Peter A. Coclanis is Albert R. Newsome Distinguished Professor of History and Director of the Global Research Institute at UNC-Chapel Hill. He served as Associate Dean for General Education at UNC from 1993 to 1998, and chaired the History Department there from July 1, 1998 through November 30, From December 1, 2003 until November 30, 2009 he served as UNC s first Associate Provost for International Affairs. He is also an adjunct professor in Economics and a Faculty Affiliate in the Department of Asian Studies. Coclanis was born in Chicago in 1952 and took his Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1984, joining the faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill that same year. He works in the fields of American, international, and Southeast Asian economic history, and has published widely in these fields. He is the author, for example, of The Shadow of a Dream: Economic Life and Death in the South Carolina Low Country, (Oxford University Press, 1989), which won the Allan Nevins Prize of the Society of American Historians, and co-author with David L. Carlton of The South, the Nation, and the World: Perspectives on Southern Economic Development (University of Virginia Press, 2003). In summer 2006 his short book, Time s Arrow, Time s Cycle: Globalization in Southeast Asia over la Longue Durée was published by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (Singapore). In 2011 a book he co-edited with Mart Stewart entitled The Mekong Delta: Environmental Change and Agricultural Sustainability was published by Springer, and in that same year he co-edited another volume (with Daniel P. Gitterman, entitled A Way Forward: Building a Globally Competitive South (UNC Global Research Institute in association with the University of North Carolina Press). He has another book and a co-edited book scheduled for publication in He has published about 300 articles and essays --including pieces in the American Historical Review, Journal of Economic History, Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, Journal of Southern History, Explorations in Economic History, Journal of Social History, William and Mary Quarterly, Journal of Interdisciplinary History, Social Science History, Agricultural History, and Technology and Culture--has edited or co-edited three other books, and has written about 150 book reviews. In addition, he has published poetry, photography, and a short story. His work has appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines as well, including the Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New York Daily News, Singapore Straits Times, The Chronicle Review, Bloomberg.com, Prospect, and Reason. He is currently completing a
4 lengthy book entitled Distant Thunder: The Creation of a World Market in Rice and the Transformations It Wrought. He has received an array of grants and fellowships over the years, including a Fulbright, and year-long fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Humanities Center, and Harvard s Charles Warren Center (twice). He has taught at Columbia, Harvard and the National University of Singapore in addition to UNC. In he was President of the Agricultural History Society, and from was President of the St. George Tucker Society. In addition, he was President of The Historical Society from 2002 to 2004, was later editor of the Journal of the Historical Society, and is on numerous editorial boards, including The Journal of Interdisciplinary History, Enterprise and Society, and Southern Cultures. He was program chair for the 2001 annual meeting of the Southern Historical Association, and in 2001 was named Concurrent Professor by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture s Agricultural Museum and Agricultural History Society for his lifetime achievements in agricultural and economic history. For three years ( ) he served as co-chair of the Rural Network of the Social Science History Association. In 1993 UNC awarded him its Hettleman Prize, the university s premier research prize. In spring 2004 he was elected a Fellow of the Society of American Historians. In fall 2005 he visited at the National University of Singapore as Raffles Professor of History, and in fall 2006 delivered the Averitt Lectures in Southern History at Georgia Southern University. A revised version of these lectures, entitled Home and the World, will be published in 2015 by the University of Georgia Press.
5 KISHORE MAHBUBANI Dean Professor in the Practice of Public Policy Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy National University of Singapore A student of philosophy and history, Prof Kishore Mahbubani has had the good fortune of enjoying a career in government and, at the same time, in writing on public issues. With the Singapore Foreign Service from 1971 to 2004, he had postings in Cambodia (where he served during the war in ), Malaysia, Washington DC and New York, where he served two stints as Singapore s Ambassador to the UN and as President of the UN Security Council in January 2001 and May He was Permanent Secretary at the Foreign Ministry from 1993 to Currently, he is the Dean and Professor in the Practice of Public Policy at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy of the National University of Singapore. Concurrently, Prof Mahbubani continues to serve in Boards and Councils of several institutions in Singapore, Europe and North America, including the Yale President's Council on International Activities (PCIA), Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs, Indian Prime Minister s Global Advisory Council, University of Bocconi International Advisory Committee, World Economic Forum - Global Agenda Council on China and as Chairman of the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize Nominating Committee. In the world of ideas, Prof Mahbubani has spoken and published globally. His articles have appeared in a wide range of journals and newspapers, including Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Washington Quarterly, Survival, American Interest, National Interest, Time, Newsweek, Financial Times and New York Times. He has also been profiled in the Economist and in Time Magazine. He is the author of Can Asians Think? (published and translated in Singapore, Canada, US, Mexico, India, China Myanmar, Turkey and Malaysia), Beyond The Age Of Innocence: Rebuilding Trust between America and the World (published and translated in the US and China), and The New Asian Hemisphere: The Irresistible Shift of Global Power to the East (published and translated in the US, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Egypt, China, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Italy, Taiwan and Vietnam). His latest book is The Great Convergence: Asia, The West and the Logic of One World (published and translated in the US, the Netherlands and China). Prof Mahbubani was selected as one of Foreign Policy s Top Global Thinkers in 2010 and In 2011, he was described as the muse of the Asian century. Most recently, he was selected by Prospect magazine as one of the top 50 world thinkers for 2014.
