3 Fred Hansen 63 Fred Hansen was the first Rice graduate to win an Olympic gold medal, and his track and field career sparkles in more ways than one. While a member of Rice s varsity track team, he set a new state record to become the Southwest Conference champion in the broad jump. He was a Rice Outdoor All-American in the pole vault from 1961 to 1963, and he also won the 1962 Outdoor NCAA Championship in the same sport. As a graduate student at Rice, Hansen continued to compete in the pole vault, setting three world records. His vault of 17 feet, 4 inches in the pole vault is still the third best in Rice history. During this time, he also won the gold medal in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Hansen graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry with his D.D.S. degree in 1969 and currently is a practicing dentist in Houston. National Track and Field Hall of Fame inductee, 2004 Rice Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, 1970 Texas Sports Hall of Fame inductee, 1967 Three-time world record holder in the pole vault, NCAA and Amateur Athletic Union All-American, Triple Crown Winner: Texas, Kansas and Drake Relays, Hansen is a life member of the Texas Dental Association and a member of the American Dental Association, and he has practiced dentistry in Houston since As a foursport letterman in high school, he set a 3A state record in the pole vault and broad jump. The Texas native continued his varied athletic endeavors after graduating from Rice, becoming one of only six amateur golfers to qualify for the U.S. Senior Open Golf Championship in 1994.

4 Bobby May 65 Bobby May attended Rice from 1961 to 1965, graduating cum laude with a B.A. in commerce. The Dallas-area native was part of Rice s highly competitive track and field team during that time, winning the NCAA highhurdle title in 1965 and four Southwest Conference hurdles titles. After graduating, May worked for two years in management programs for John Deere and Ford Motor Company. He hadn t thought about pursuing coaching as a career, but when he was approached about returning to Rice as the assistant track coach and assistant business manager, he jumped at the chance. May served as assistant track coach for eight years and then spent four years as head coach. He was named athletics director in 1988, taking over a program that hadn t won a championship since But May led Rice through a remarkable turnaround starting in 1994, when the football team and the women s cross country team won their respective SWC championships. After that, Rice did a lot of winning under May, bringing home 35 conference championships between 1994 and 2006, including a national baseball championship in After 39 years of service, May retired in Director of athletics, Rice, Associate athletics director, Rice, Business manager, Rice, Head track coach and assistant athletics director for business, Rice, Assistant track coach and assistant business manager, Rice, In addition to spending nearly four decades working at Rice, May served on the executive committees of both Division IA Athletic Directors and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics from 1997 to He also was on the NCAA Championship Cabinet at that time. May was inducted into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame in 1971.

5 Walter E. RED 65 While at Rice, Walter E. Red was an NCAA All-American for javelin and was a member of the 1964 U.S.A. Olympic Track and Field Team in Tokyo. He earned a B.A. and a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1965, joining Arizona State University as a faculty associate in the same year, a position he held until Red received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from ASU in 1972 and continued his career in academia. Currently, he is a tenured professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Brigham Young University. Throughout his years of teaching, he has continued to stay in touch with the mechanical engineering industry, most recently serving as a consultant for Direct Controls Inc. Wrote the original proposal that helped the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology at Brigham Young University receive a PACE Award of $313 million in software and hardware, 2003 Made more than 150 presentations on mechanical engineering to companies and individuals, Holds several robot calibration and direct control patents Participated in research and proposal activities that have garnered funding of more than $15 million, Authored or co-authored 100 journal, invited, peerreviewed and other publications, including three textbooks Fellow, Society of Manufacturing Engineers Red has become a leader in the field of mechanical and manufacturing engineering, most recently serving as session chairman for the 2006 Computer-Aided Design Conference in Thailand. Since 2005, he has been on the editorial board of the Journal for Computer-Aided Design and Applications, and he is a reviewer for several industry journals. The recipient of the 2000 Brigham Young University Technology Transfer Award, Red is a member of several mechanical and manufacturing engineering related organizations and committees.

6 Burke Grandjean 71 A committed student and a serious athlete, Burke Grandjean was a four-year letterman on the Rice men s track and field team, running the quarter and half mile. During his time at Rice, Grandjean ran on winning mile relay and sprint-medley relay teams at the Texas, Kansas and Drake Relays. He earned All-American recognition when the Rice mile relay team finished second at the NCAA Championship Meet in 1970, and he was cocaptain of the 1971 Rice track and field team that won the Southwest Conference championship by one-half point. After earning his B.A. cum laude from Rice in 1971, he went on to earn his M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin. He is currently the executive director of the Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center at the University of Wyoming. Gold medalist in the USA 1600-meter relay, World Association of Veteran Athletes, 1999 Received Presidential Scholar recognition from President Lyndon B. Johnson, 1967 Author or co-author of 20 refereed journal articles; more than 75 technical reports; and numerous other articles, book chapters and book reviews Has served as principal or co-principal investigator on more than 45 funded projects A current leader in the field of statistics and behavioral sciences, Grandjean has twice been recognized by Rice for his outstanding performance as a student athlete. Recipient of the coveted Bob Quin Award in 1971, he was recently honored with the 2007 Champions Award. Grandjean is a member of the American Association for Public Opinion Research, the American Sociological Association, the George Wright Society and the Justice Research and Statistics Association, and he has held numerous positions on editorial boards and grant review panels.

7 David L. Roberts 74 A four-year member of the Rice men s track and field team, David L. Roberts was an NCAA champion in 1971, 1972 and He was the National Association of American Universities champion in 1972 and 1974 and held the world record in pole vault from 1975 to Roberts represented the United States in the 1976 Summer Olympics, winning a bronze medal in the men s pole vault. After graduating in 1974 with a B.A. in anthropology and psychology, he went on to the University of Florida at Gainesville, where he earned an M.D. with honors from the university s College of Medicine in Clinical assistant professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Florida College of Medicine Chairman, Alachua County EMS Advisory Council Clinical assistant professor, Department of Community Health and Family Medicine, University of Florida, U.S. Olympic Sports Medicine Committee, Olympic bronze medal in men s pole vault, 1976 Fiction and poetry listings in A Directory of American Poets and Fiction Writers Roberts is the current medical director and chairman in the emergency department at Shands AGH, one of the Southeast s premier health care systems. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Alachua County Medical Society, the Florida College of Emergency Physicians and the American College of Emergency Physicians, where he also is a fellow. In addition to English, Roberts is fluent in German, Swedish and French and enjoys wildlife rehabilitation, blue-water sailing, and writing poetry and short fiction.

8 Ken Stadel 74 Arriving in Houston from Quenemo, Kan., Ken Stadel might have been a country boy, but he left Rice with a string of impressive accomplishments under his belt. In addition to his scholastic achievements, including making the President s Honor Roll as a biology major, he was a contender for Southwest Conference and national honors in discus. Among hundreds of competitors, Stadel twice placed second in the NCAA Championships in discus throw and won the SWC title four times in a row. He was also a two-time first team All-American in track and field and held a rare double of discus and shot put on the same day at the Texas Relays in Rice Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, 1988 Ranked among the top five discus throwers in the world for three consecutive years, Bob Quin Award recipient, 1974, honoring the top graduating Rice athlete in any sport for all-around excellence Emmett Brunson Award winner, 1974, honoring the most valuable member of the men s track and field team Stadel s career in the discus spanned a number of years after he graduated from Rice, and he was ranked in the top 10 in the U.S. for 10 years, with a top five world ranking three of those years. He received his M.B.A. from San Jose State University in 1982, and he is currently the president of Osage Building Materials in Osage City, Kan.

9 Jeffery Wells 76 During his four years at Rice, Jeffery Wells certainly made tracks both as a student and as a member of Rice s track and cross country team. An accomplished longdistance runner, Wells was an NCAA Track All-American in 1975 and 1976 and an NCAA Cross Country All- American in 1974 and He was the cross country Southwest Conference champion in 1974 and 1975 and the three-mile SWC champion in The valedictorian of his Madisonville High School graduating class in 1972, Wells excelled in the classroom at Rice as well. His senior year, he was the recipient of the Bob Quin Award, which is given annually to the university s most outstanding all-around male athlete. After graduating cum laude with a B.A. in history, Wells went on to graduate school, receiving a master s in theology and a doctorate of ministry from the Dallas Theological Seminary. Texas Runners Hall of Fame inductee, 2006 Rice Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, 1986 Second-place finisher, Boston Marathon, 1978 Member, U.S. Cross Country teams, 1977 and 1978, competing at the World Cross Country Championships Olympic Trials 10,000 finalist, 1976 and 1980 Through the years, Wells has continued to blaze trails. He has been a founder and pastor of several churches and was the originator of Project Cathedral, a doctoral-level dissertation project at the Dallas Theological Seminary Center for Christian Leadership. An avid marathon runner, Wells has won several competitions in Honolulu, Houston, Dallas, Stockholm and Auckland and is the former record co-holder of the American Marathon held in Eugene, Ore.

10 Larry W. Nettles 78 From 1975 to 1978, Larry W. Nettles was a four-year letter winner on the Rice track and field team. He was named All-NCAA District VI in cross country in 1976 and 1977, and the Rice cross country teams on which he participated never finished lower than second in Southwest Conference Championship meets. Nettles graduated with a B.S. in civil engineering in 1978 and went on to study at the University of Texas School of Law. After earning a J.D. with honors in 1981, he began practicing environmental law and has since been recognized several times as one of the top environmental lawyers in the United States. He currently is a partner and co-head of the environmental law section in the Houston office of the international law firm Vinson & Elkins LLP. Listed in The Best Lawyers in America, Has written more than 50 articles on environmental law topics for a variety of seminars and continuing legal education programs Named one of the Top 10 Lawyers in Environmental Law, U.S. Lawyer Rankings, Named a Texas Super Lawyer in environmental/land use law by Texas Monthly, Nettles has supported the Rice Athletics Department, assisting in endowing an athletics scholarship in memory of his former teammate, Steve Schroeder. The founder of the Environmental Law Section of the Houston Bar Association, he is chairman and past president of The Park People Inc. and serves the Houston-Galveston Area Regional Safety Council as a business community representative. Nettles is a graduate of Leadership Houston and is also a member of the Greater Houston Partnership Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, a fellow of both the Houston Bar Foundation and the Texas Bar Foundation, and a former chairman of the Houston Chamber of Commerce s Sports and Recreation Committee. He is a frequent speaker on various environmental law topics for many professional and industry groups and has defended clients in more than three dozen criminal enforcement proceedings.

11 Michael Novelli 80 Michael Novelli still holds the Strake Jesuit High School record in the mile run at 4:10.2 as well as the Rice record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:36.9. An NCAA Cross Country All-American in 1977 and an NCAA Track All-American in 1978, he served as captain of Rice s 1979 cross country and 1980 track teams. After earning a B.A. cum laude in economics and a master s degree in accounting, both in 1980, he went on to Cambridge University, where he received an M.A. in economics in He currently is the managing partner of Cypressbrook Company, a real estate development and brokerage organization. He has served as an adult Sunday school teacher both at Westlake Bible Church in Austin and at Wheaton Bible Church in Wheaton, Ill. More recently, he has led several short-term mission trips to Cuba. Novelli currently serves as an elder at WoodsEdge Community Church in The Woodlands, Texas, leading a $10 million capital campaign for the church in He served on the board of the Commercial Real Estate Broker s Association of Montgomery County from 2005 to 2007 and currently serves on the board of the Jones Partners at Rice s Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management.

12 Bruce Gingrich 81 Fast on his feet, Bruce Gingrich was a five-time Southwest Conference champion at Rice and a valued member of the men s track and field team in the mid- 1970s. He received a track scholarship, matriculating in 1976, and he broke the Rice and SWC record in the 800 meters. In 1979, Gingrich anchored the sprint medley relay to a new world record with an 800-meter split of 1:44.8, which at that time was the No. 1 time in the world for ages 21 and younger. Following graduation with a B.A. in economics in 1981, Gingrich took a sales position with F. Schumacher & Company before returning to the University of Houston, where in 1990 he earned a pharmacy degree. He soon after purchased his first drugstore and now owns 21 stores. No. 1 sales representative in the nation for F. Schumacher & Company Owner of Lifechek Drug, the nation s largest independently owned drugstore chain, with annual sales exceeding $70 million 997 Porsche Cup car racing competitor In addition to managing his Texas-area drugstores, Gingrich owns Dream Systems, a home entertainment and automation business, and he is venturing into the foodservice industry with a Mexican restaurant that is scheduled to open in November He continues to enjoy life in the fast lane as a trained pilot, and his cup car won the European Grand Am Championship in the GT2 class in Gingrich attributes much of his success to the education and athletic experience Rice afforded him and aspires to give other young men and women the same opportunities he enjoyed as a Rice student athlete.

13 Ryan Harlan 04 One of the most accomplished track and field athletes in Rice s history, Ryan Harlan is the all-time record holder in the decathlon and pentathlon. Although Harlan had never competed in three of the 10 decathlon events prior to matriculating at Rice, he was the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Co-Freshman of the Year and Junior National Champion in the decathlon in A four-time WAC pentathlon champion, Harlan also was an academic all-star, winning the 2001 Stancliff Award for outstanding academic and athletic achievements. He was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and a recipient of the Fred Wolcott Award in A WAC Athlete of the Week numerous times, Harlan was named the 2003 Rice University Honor Athlete before graduating in 2004 with a B.A. in managerial studies and studio art. Reval Hotels Cup International Indoor Heptathlon Competition winner, 2007 Fourth-place finisher, AT&T USA Outdoor Championships, 2007 Second-place decathlon finisher, AT&T USA Outdoor Championships, 2006 Two-time USA National Indoor Heptathlon champion, 2005 and 2006 NCAA Division I national champion in the decathlon, 2004 Since leaving Rice, Harlan continues to dominate nationally and internationally in track and field. With a win at the USA Indoor Combined Events Championships and a runner-up finish at the AT&T USA Outdoor Championships in 2006, he established himself as a major player and currently ranks fourth internationally in the men s decathlon. He received the 2006 William E. Simon Grant and the 2006 and 2007 USA Track and Field Elite Athlete grants, and he has been featured in Sports Illustrated and Houston Modern Luxury magazine.
