1 2016 Online Seminar Faculty Biographies Rex Bennett, Ph.D. President, Achieving Unlimited Rex Bennett brings a combination of business, management, and academic experience to offer a broad basis and integrated perspective for speeches and presentations on motivation, competitive strategy, customer satisfaction, and strategic planning. Rex is a nationally and internationally recognized speaker for hundreds of businesses, organizations, associations, and executive and management development seminars and courses. He also serves on the faculty of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mike Boehlje, Ph.D. Professor, Agricultural Economics Department, Purdue University Dr. Mike Boehlje is a distinguished professor in the Department of Ag Economics and the Center for Food and Agricultural Business at Purdue University. His research interests include alternative systems of coordination of the food and industrial product chain, the industrialization of agriculture, and alternative financial and organizational structures for farm and agribusiness firms. His research has been published by many agricultural publications and he s a well-known speaker at many state and national Ag Banking Conferences. In addition, he serves on the faculty of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Brandon Bohle Senior Information Security Consultant, Secure Banking Solutions Brandon Bohle is a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) who received his Bachelor of Science in Computer and Network Security with minors in Networking and Computer Forensics and his Master of Science in Information Assurance and Computer Security with an emphasis in Banking and Finance Security from Dakota State University. Brandon is also a Senior Information Security Consultant for Secure Banking Solutions. Dan Dwyer Managing Director, First Integrity Capital Markets Corp. Dan Dwyer is a Managing Director with First Integrity Capital Markets Corp. serving as a consultant to private and community financial institutions nationwide. With 20+ years of industry experience focused on capital markets and funds management for financial institutions, Dan has a unique background assisting clients in developing and executing investment, interest rate derivative, and funding management strategies. He continues to preside as chair and sitting member of Investment and Asset/Liability Committees for a number of privately held banks Nan Gesche, M.A. University of Minnesota Nan Gesche, M.A., is an expert in finding out where things go wrong, and in helping them go right. As an educator, speaker, and consultant whose passion is to help people play well together, Nan can guide organizations and individuals through transition without losing sight of your strategic goals. She has over 20 years of independent and corporate experience allowing her to help clients focus on the realities of business while stretching their thinking. Nan has worked with diverse organizations on projects such as change management, resiliency building, conflict management, as well as working with individuals on conflict management issues. She currently teaches for the U of M s Communication Studies department and the College of Continuing Education, St. Thomas Center of Excellence, and the Graduate School of Banking in Madison.
2 Jeff Goble Chief Market Strategist, Capital Markets, Country Club Bank, Kansas City Since 1986, Jeff has taught many investment classes at GSB in the graduate and post graduate schools as well as in the college faculty curriculum. Jeff also serves on the faculty of the Financial Managers Society in Chicago. Since 1989, he has written a bimonthly investment advice column for Bank News Magazine on a wide variety of investment and economic topics. He is the author of several books More Yield, Less Risk... Better Sleep! A common sense guide to managing your bank s bond portfolio, and Nest Egg How to Build Yours Then Turn it into Something Extraordinary. Charles H. Green Managing Director, Small Business Finance Institute Charles Green is a seasoned commercial lender with over 35 years of experience and serves as Managing Director of Small Business Finance Institute, which provides commercial lender training. Earlier in his career, he founded and served as President/CEO of Sunrise Bank of Atlanta. Green has written extensively about commercial lending, including the recent Banker s Guide to New Small Business Finance (John Wiley & Sons, 2014). He earned a B.S. Finance from the University of Alabama, a diploma from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking and completed Executive Education at Harvard Business School Richard Hamm President & Owner, Advantage Consulting & Training Richard Hamm has been training bankers for 25 years, specializing in all phases of commercial lending and credit, including portfolio and risk management, commercial real estate and appraisals, plus selling and negotiating skills. His training work includes our top industry associations numerous statewide banking and community banking associations, plus individual banks. On the consulting side, he has been involved in director training, loan policy formation, bank formation (start-ups and acquisitions) and related strategic planning. He is based in Huntsville, AL and owns/operates Advantage Consulting & Training after a 22-year banking career including senior positions in lending and credit. Richard is also on the faculty of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tom Hershberger President, Cross Financial Group Tom is President and Founder of Cross Financial Group, a sales and marketing consulting firm based in Lincoln, Nebraska. He has a comprehensive background in commercial banking and marketing management in the financial services industry. His in-depth understanding of the banking challenges and opportunities comes from 30 years of experience working with financial institutions, having served as president of a community bank and as a marketing director of two large retail banking institutions. Tom is an active speaker at state and national conventions and is a faculty member at several schools of banking, including the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Chad Knutson Senior Information Security Consultant, Secure Banking Solutions Chad Knutson is a Senior Information Security Consultant and serves as President of the SBS Institute for Secure Banking Solutions (SBS) out of Madison, SD. SBS is a leader in information security consulting for the financial industry in the US. SBS works with more than 900 banks around the country on information security services such as the development of Information Security Programs, Policies, and Risk Assessments, along with performing IT Audits, Penetration Tests, Vulnerability Assessment and other security services. Chad is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and Certified in Risk and Information Security Controls (CRISC), and received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems and his Master of Science in Information Assurance with an emphasis in Banking and Finance Security from Dakota State University. Chad has been with SBS since 2004 and has consulted with many financial institutions during this time.
3 Linda Larger Owner, Banker Education Solutions and Training LLC Linda Larger has successfully coached and trained hundreds of bankers to be their best in credit risk analysis and sales execution. With a long career in banking she has experience as both a banker and training professional having worked as a Vice President in Business Development for Commercial and Consumer Lending, Special Assets and Training. Her training work has been featured in publications of the Association for Financial Professionals and Business Banking Board. She is the owner of Banker Education Solutions & Training LLC (BEST) where she works with a variety of banks and state banking associations in a consulting role on training needs identification, and training program delivery and evaluation. Her favorite audiences are Lenders, Special Assets and Credit Administration associates. Jim Lethert Attorney Jim is a Minnesota licensed attorney practicing exclusively in the estate planning area for the past 45 years. He is an independent practitioner and focuses on the areas of trusts of all types, wills, and companion documents. He also has significant experience in the preparation of advanced directives such as Durable Powers of Attorney, and Health Care Directives with Proxy Appointments. His knowledge includes transfer tax minimization strategies, charitable planning and business succession arrangements. Jim s banking career spans 43 years as well, all of it devoted to Personal Trust Services. He started at Northwestern National Bank of St. Paul, Minnesota (later Norwest and Wells Fargo); advanced to First National Bank in the Twin Cities, then to Firstar Bank, and the last 15 years at U.S. Bank. He was responsible for all facets of trust administration. Ned Miller Senior Vice President, MZ Bierly Consulting, Inc. Ned Miller is a Senior Vice President with MZ BIERLY CONSULTING, INC. a consulting firm that specializes in helping bankers develop strong relationships with business customers. Ned was formerly a relationship manager and team leader at Citibank and at the Philadelphia National Bank and spent two years with The Richardson Company, delivering sales, sales management and negotiations training to bankers in the U.S., Canada, and various countries in Latin America. Ned is also on the faculty of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Patrice McGuire Principal, McGuire Business Partners Patrice is a seasoned Human Resources and Training professional and provides over 25 years of experience in these areas. For the past 14 years Patrice has worked as a trainer, consultant and business partner for many organizations in a variety of industries. Much of Patrice s work history and experience has been in the banking and financial services industry. She is currently a faculty member for the Graduate School of Banking and has been a webinar program presenter for many years. Patrice received her BBA in Human Resource Management from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and is past President for the Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development. David L. Osburn Founder and Managing Member, Osburn & Associates, LLC David is the founder of Osburn & Associates LLC, a business training and contract CFO firm that provides seminars, keynote speeches, and webinars for various trade groups including CPAs, bankers, attorneys, credit managers, contractors, and business owners. He also serves as a contract CFO for construction companies, medical practitioners, and developers. His extensive professional background encompasses over 30 years in banking, finance, and marketing. His bank commercial lending credentials include comprehensive loan underwriting, management, customer development, and loan workout experience.
4 Ashley Podhradsky Assistant Professor, Information Systems, Dakota State University Dr. Ashley Podhradsky is an assistant professor and MS Information Assurance program coordinator at Dakota State University. Her current research focuses on developing digital forensics standards for non-traditional devices, specifically the Xbox 360 and One. With more communication moving from traditional computing devices to non-traditional devices such as gaming systems, there is a strong need for forensic experts who can analyze these systems. Her work has been published in several journals, conference proceedings, and she works directly with several government agencies. She has also been an invited presenter to disseminate her research at institutions such as The Pennsylvania State University, Florida State and DePaul, and government agencies such as the Bureau of Justice Affairs. Mark Scholl Partner, Wipfli LLP With over 30 years of technology experience, Mark specializes in all aspects of technology services for the firm, primarily in the financial institutions industry, including information security and perimeter vulnerability assessments, IT risk assessments, network design and support, and IT training. He is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars on various information technology topics. Mark is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), and Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA). Philip K. Smith President, Gerrish McCreary Smith, Attorneys and Consultants Mr. Smith is the President and a member of the Board of Directors of the Memphis-based law firm of Gerrish McCreary Smith, Attorneys and Consultants. Mr. Smith's legal and consulting practice places special emphasis on community bank mergers and acquisitions, bank holding company formations and use, financial analysis, acquisition and ownership planning for boards of directors and strategic planning for boards of directors. His firm exclusively represents financial institutions across the country and he is a nationally known speaker at banking conferences, trade associations and for individual boards of directors. He is also on the faculty of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Kevin F. Streff, Ph.D. Founder and Managing Partner, Secure Banking Solutions Kevin Streff is the director of the Center for Information Assurance at Dakota State, which has been recognized by both the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security as a national center of academic excellence in information assurance. He has extensive knowledge of the financial services industry, including banking, insurance, and credit operations. Streff is founder and managing partner of Secure Banking Solutions, a security consulting firm focused on improving security in community banks across the country. Kevin also serves on the Faculty of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the GSB Bank Technology Management and IT Security Schools. Josh Stroschein Instructor, Information Systems, Dakota State University Josh Stroschein received his B.S. in Computer Science from the University of South Dakota (USD) and his M.S. in Information Assurance from Dakota State University (DSU) in Madison, SD where he now serves as an instructor of Information Systems. He is also an instructor with the SBS Institute conducting seminars, webinars, and is currently developing a new certification program for mobile devices, to provide additional value to financial institutions around the country. Josh has spent over a decade as a programmer with a focus on web applications and application security. He is also a technical advisor and consultant, providing his years of experience to organizations across a variety of industries. His research interests include malware analysis, application security, software development and wireless communications.
5 Cheryl Thomas, SPHR-SCP Director, Wipfli LLP Cheryl is a director on the strategic advisory services team of Wipfli LLP s financial institutions practice. Her experience as a human resource (HR) practitioner gives her a unique skill set that enables her to understand her clients needs and provide services and solutions that exceed their expectations. Cheryl brings more than 30 years of experience in financial services and health care, working in a variety of organizations. Her HR leadership experience includes small and large companies that are locally, nationally, and internationally focused. Cheryl has worked with boards of directors and executive management of family-owned, nonprofit, and publicly traded companies. Greyson Tuck Attorney, Gerrish McCreary Smith, PC Mr. Tuck is a member of the Board of Directors of both the Memphis based law firm of Gerrish McCreary Smith, PC, Attorneys and Gerrish McCreary Smith, Consultants, LLC. These two firms have assisted numerous community banks in virtually every state across the nation. Mr. Tuck s legal and consulting practice places special emphasis on community bank holding company formation and use, community bank mergers and acquisitions, regulatory matters, corporate reorganizations, corporate taxation, general corporate law and community bank strategic planning. He is a frequent presenter at state and national bank association conferences and has authored a number of articles of interest to financial institutions. Jon Waldman Partner and Senior Information Security Consultant, Secure Banking Solutions Jon Waldman, Partner and Senior Information Security Consultant for Secure Banking Solutions, LLC, is a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC) who received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems with a minor in Business Administration from Dakota State University and his Master of Science in Information Assurance with an emphasis in Banking and Finance Security from Dakota State University. Jon is also a co-founder of SBS, and over the last ten years, has helped hundreds community banks across the country create and implement comprehensive, valuable, and manageable Information Security Programs. He also conducts webinars and certification programs, such as Certified Community Banking Vendor Manager, for the SBS Institute.
