Arizona took the second half kick and engineered a 15-play, 65-yard drive that elapsed 6:35 off the clock before a 31-yard PK Neil Rackers field goal put the Cardinals in front, Rackers pooched the ensuing kick into the second row of the 49ers return unit where LB Takeo Spikes mishandled the ball, resulting in an Arizona fumble recovery and a first down at the San Francisco 33-yard line. Arizona converted that drive into a touchdown when rookie RB Tim Hightower scored on a two-yard run on a fourth-and-one situation for a Cardinals lead. San Francisco QB J.T. O Sullivan positioned the 49ers for a 30-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to close the gap to The 49ers comeback chances ended when Arizona went on an 18-play, 62-yard drive field goal drive that took over 10 minutes for a advantage. After spotting the Lions a field goal, O Sullivan connected on a 25-yard pass to WR Bryant Johnson followed by an 18-yard pass to WR Josh Morgan and then a 24-yard touchdown pass to TE Delanie Walker for a 21-3 advantage. The only scoring in the third quarter was a field goal by Detroit to close the lead to 21-6 before the 49ers had a ten-point fourth quarter to seal the victory. The 49ers moved to the Detroit one-yard line early in the fourth quarter and were faced with a fourth-and-one situation. Head coach Mike Nolan elected to go for the touchdown rather than attempt a field goal. Eleven-year veteran CB/PR Allen Rossum took a handoff and scored a touchdown on a one-yard run for ers lead. It was Rossum s first NFL offensive play of his career. Detroit responded on the next series when QB Jon Kitna scrambled on a fourth-down play to help set up a 34-yard touchdown pass to RB Rudi Johnson. The Lions attempted an onsides kick on the ensuing drive that Battle picked up and returned 28 yards to the Detroit 12-yard line to set up a 25-yard PK Joe Nedney field goal for a lead. 11 Game 4 NEW ORLEANS 31, SAN FRANCISCO 17 At New Orleans, September 28, 2008 RB Deuce McAllister s hard running gave the New Orleans Saints the credible power running threat they needed to open deep throws for QB Drew Brees in a Saints victory at the Louisiana Superdome. Brees was 23-of-35 for 363 yards and had three scores, including touchdown passes of 47 yards to WR Robert Meachem and 33 yards to WR Lance Moore. Brees also set up scores with a 52-yard pass to Meachem and an 81-yard connection with WR Devery Henderson. McAllister saw his most extensive action of the year, gaining 73 yards on 20 carries, including a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. The 49ers had three turnovers, including two QB J.T. O Sullivan passes that were intercepted by the Saints in the end zone. Despite the big plays and turnovers, the 49ers still had a chance with four minutes left to play. Leading 28-9 with just over six minutes remaining, New Orleans elected to go for the touchdown on a fourth-and-goal situation from the San Francisco one-yard line. S Michael Lewis forced a fumble that was recovered by LB Patrick Willis following a pass from Brees to FB Olaniyi Sobomehin. The 49ers responded with a touchdown drive that was helped by a 43-yard pass interference penalty against the Saints that gave the 49ers a first down at midfield. O Sullivan completed a 19-yard pass to TE Vernon Davis and a 36-yard pass to WR Arnaz Battle to get in position for a five-yard touchdown pass to WR Isaac Bruce to close the Saints lead to after the successful two-point play with 4:08 left in the game. The 49ers tried to get the ball back, but failed to convert the onsides kick attempt, and the Saints took advantage of the good field position with a field goal to seal the victory. After San Francisco took a 3-0 first quarter lead, New Orleans countered with 21 points in the second quarter. Early in the quarter the 49ers had their first turnover when O Sullivan was stripped of the ball on a sack at the 49ers own 32-yard line. That play set up the Saints first touchdown, a five-yard pass from Brees to Moore. Brees had touchdown passes of 33 yards and 47 yards on the Saints next two series sandwiched between a 49ers field goal to take a 21-6 halftime lead. The 49ers opened the second half with a 10-play, 48-yard drive into New Orleans territory but the Saints forced the 49ers to settle for a field goal. The 49ers drove deep into New Orleans territory on their next two drives, but both times O Sullivan was picked off while attempting a pass into the end zone. 12 SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS Game 5 NEW ENGLAND 30, SAN FRANCISCO 21 At San Francisco, October 5, 2008 Three turnovers and an explosive 66-yard touchdown reception by New England WR Randy Moss helped the visiting Patriots beat San Francisco to drop the 49ers to a 2-3 record. New England had not traveled to Candlestick Park since 1995 and had never won in San Francisco in four attempts. After a strong start that saw the 49ers take a 14-7 lead on two QB J.T. New England dominated the time of possession, holding the ball for 39:52 compared to the 49ers 20:08. The 49ers also had trouble getting first downs, going through a stretch of 36 minutes without a first down during the second and third quarter. O Sullivan threw three touchdown passes, but completed just 14 of 29 passes for 130 yards and was intercepted three times. After striking first on a 16-yard touchdown pass from O Sullivan to RB Frank Gore, the Patriots responded on their next drive going deep with a 66-yard touchdown pass from QB Matt Cassel to Moss to tie the game at 7-7. A 38-yard pass from O Sullivan to WR Isaac Bruce on the ensuing series set up a six-yard pass from O Sullivan to Bruce for a 14-7 advantage. The Patriots went on a 13-play drive that took over six minutes and ended in a field goal to close to and then with just over three minutes to play in the first half took a lead they would not relinquish when RB Kevin Faulk capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown after taking a direct snap on a fourth-down play with nine seconds to play in the first half. S Rodney Harrison picked off an O Sullivan pass deep inside San Francisco territory in the third quarter to set up a Patriots touchdown, as New England expanded its lead to The 49ers had the ball for only 2:49 of the third quarter. After taking a lead on a field goal early in the fourth quarter, the 49ers offense finally was able to move the ball. The 49ers gained four first downs on a drive that went to the New England five-yard line where O Sullivan connected with Bruce for a score that made it with over ten minutes still remaining in the game. O Sullivan completed three straight passes, including a 28-yard pass to WR Isaac Bruce, to move the 49ers to the New York 19-yard line. On the next play, O Sullivan was intercepted by Johnson for a second time. O Sullivan was picked off when he attempted a pass to WR Arnaz Battle in the end zone to end the 49ers scoring threat and secure the Giants a halftime lead. The 49ers first offensive series in the third quarter was killed when O Sullivan and RB Frank Gore fumbled the exchange, allowing the Giants to recover at the San Francisco 18-yard line. The Giants converted that turnover into a touchdown when QB Eli Manning connected with WR Plaxico Buress on a six-yard touchdown to extend their lead to The Giants moved to the San Francisco 17-yard line late in the third quarter and were on the verge of taking a 17-point lead with a 35-yard field goal attempt. LB Manny Lawson blocked the kick, and CB Nate Clements picked up the ball and raced 74 yards untouched for the score to close the gap to heading into the final quarter. The Giants defense proved too much for the 49ers, and New York added five points in the fourth quarter with a 48-yard field goal and a safety to secure the victory. The 49ers were backed at their own 20-yard line when DE Justin Tuck forced a fumble on a sack of O Sullivan. The ball rolled into the end zone and was kicked out of bounds by WR Josh Morgan for a safety. 15 Game 8 SEATTLE 34, SAN FRANCISCO 13 At San Francisco, October 26, 2008 The Seattle Seahawks burned the 49ers on two fullback swing passes that went for touchdowns and also returned an interception for a score in a victory over the San Francisco 49ers to ruin Mike Singletary s debut as head coach. Singletary was named head coach following the dismissal of Mike Nolan earlier in the week. Seattle CB Josh Wilson scored on a 75-yard interception return, and Seattle FB Leonard Weaver scored on touchdown passes of 43 and 62 yards to give the 49ers their fifth straight loss. QB J.T. O Sullivan lost a fumble early in the game and then threw the interception that was returned for a touchdown before being replaced by backup QB Shaun Hill at the end of the first half. Both of his turnovers happened inside Seattle territory. Down 3-0 early in the game, O Sullivan connected with TE Delanie Walker for a 53-yard gain to the Seattle 21-yard line. The 49ers moved to the six-yard line when O Sullivan fumbled on a sack. The ball was recovered by DE Patrick Kerney, who raced to the San Francisco 27-yard line to set up a Seahawks field goal and a 6-0 first quarter lead. The Seahawks extended their lead to 13-0 early in the second quarter before the 49ers answered with a field goal to make it 13-3 midway through the second quarter. The 49ers were driving inside Seattle territory and were faced with a fourth-and-four situation from the 29-yard line with 44 seconds to play in the first half. With two time outs remaining the 49ers elected to try to convert on fourth-down, but O Sullivan s pass was picked off and returned for a touchdown to make it 20-6 at the break. Hill completed 15 of 23 attempts for 173 yards with one touchdown in relief. On his first drive in the second half, he took the team on a 14-play, 56-yard drive that ended in a 40-yard field goal to close the gap to On the ensuing series, Seattle QB Seneca Wallace completed a short pass to Weaver that resulted in a 43-yard touchdown to put the Seahawks in front, 27-6, heading into the final quarter. A two-yard touchdown pass from Hill to WR Jason Hill closed the gap to early in the fourth quarter, but Weaver sealed the Seattle win with a 62-yard touchdown on a swing pass from Wallace with six minutes to play for a win. 16 SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS Game 9 ARIZONA 29, SAN FRANCISCO 24 At Arizona, November 10, 2008 The Arizona Cardinals stopped RB Michael Robinson up the middle on a run from the two-yard line as the game ended to preserve a victory against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football at University of Phoenix Stadium. The Cardinals never led in the game until 4:16 left to play when a 34-yard interception return by LB Karlos Dansby set up a fiveyard touchdown pass from QB Kurt Warner to WR Anquan Boldin to give the Cardinals a lead after a failed two-point play. San Francisco still had two more chances with drives into Arizona territory. The first one ended when QB Shaun Hill was intercepted by S Adrian Wilson at the 12-yard line. The 49ers defenses stopped the Cardinals on three straight plays on the ensuing series and got the ball back at the Arizona 42-yard line with 1:06 left in regulation. Hill completed three-straight passes to WR Jason Hill, including a 14-yard pass to get to the Arizona one-yard line with 21 seconds left. RB Frank Gore was tripped up on the first run, and then Robinson was stopped on a two-yard run up the middle to secure the Cardinals win. The 49ers took the game s opening kickoff for a touchdown on a 104-yard return by KR Allen Rossun and then jumped in front at halftime behind a 31-yard touchdown pass from Hill to WR Josh Morgan and an 18-yard touchdown pass from Hill to TE Vernon Davis. One of the defining moments of that drive was when Hill lost his helmet and still plowed ahead to convert a third-and-11 situation with a 12-yard run. Warner, who finished with 328 yards passing, led the Cardinals on a touchdown drive to start the second half, but the 49ers answered with a field goal drive to keep a lead heading into the final quarter. Ball security plagued the 49ers late in the game, leading to nine Arizona points. Hill lost a fumble on an exchange from center at the San Francisco 10-yard line to set up a Cardinals field goal early in the fourth quarter. That was followed by Hill s two interceptions later in the fourth quarter. The 49ers defense held the Cardinals to 46 yards on 19 carries for a 2.4-yard average. LOUIS 16 At San Francisco, November 16, 2008 Mike Singletary picked up his first win as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers as the team ended a six-game losing streak with a victory over NFC-West rival St. Louis. The 49ers used a 28-point second quarter to jump to a 35-3 halftime lead. QB Shaun Hill threw two touchdown passes, ran for another score and RB Frank Gore rushed for another two to give the 49ers the lead. Hill had a perfect passer rating of in the first half and helped the 49ers hold the lead in the second half to secure the win. Gore registered his 15th career 100-yard rushing game with 106 yards on 18 carries for a 5.9-yard average. The 49ers took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, and after a St. Louis field goal early in the second quarter, the 49ers answered with a 69-yard drive that ended in a two-yard touchdown pass from Hill to TE Vernon Davis for a 14-3 lead. Hill positioned the 49ers for the score with a completion to WR Bryant Johnson that resulted in a 42-yard gain to the St. Louis seven-yard line. The Rams next three drives ended in turnovers, which led to 21 unanswered points by San Francisco. First, Rams QB Marc Bulger lost the exchange from center and the 49ers recovered at the St. Louis 16-yard line to set up Gore s second touchdown on a one-yard run for a 21-3 lead. Then on the following series, Bulger was intercepted by CB Walt Harris to give the 49ers a first down at their own 40-yard line. A 31-yard pass-play from Hill to RB DeShaun Foster gave the 49ers a first down at the one-yard line where Hill scored on a one-yard run up the middle for a 28-3 advantage. On the next St. Louis series, CB Nate Clements intercepted a Bulger pass that gave San Francisco a first down at their own 44-yard line with 1:49 to go in the first half. Hill executed a two-minute drill and took the 49ers to the two-yard line where he connected with Johnson on a two-yard touchdown pass for a 35-3 lead. A 36-yard pass from Hill to RB Michael Robinson was the highlight of that drive. The Rams added two field goals in the third quarter and a touchdown in the fourth quarter for a final. 18 SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS Game 11 DALLAS 35, SAN FRANCISCO 22 At Dallas, November 23, 2008 Dallas Cowboys WR Terrell Owens broke out with 213 yards receiving to help the Cowboys beat San Francisco at Texas Stadium. The 49ers had a great chance to grab control early, driving into Dallas territory on their first three drives. After missing a 53-yard field goal, the 49ers faced a first-and-goal from the four on their next two drives but were forced to settle for a pair of field goals and a 6-0 first quarter lead. Dallas took control in the second quarter with 22 unanswered points. The Cowboys took the lead when QB Tony Romo completed a 75-yard touchdown pass to Owens on a third-down play for a 7-6 lead. The Cowboys blocked a punt out of the end zone for a safety on the next set of downs and scored on their last three drives of the second half behind two field goals and a touchdown to build a 22-6 halftime lead. Romo, who threw three touchdowns and had 341 yards passing, connected with Owens for a 45-yard pass for one of the field goals. Dallas s touchdown was set up by a 49ers turnover. QB Shaun Hill lost the exchange from center deep in Dallas territory, and the Cowboys recovered at the San Francisco 19-yard line to set up a one-yard touchdown pass from Romo to TE Martellus Bennett for the 22-6 lead. The Cowboys lead swelled to 29-6 when they took the second half kickoff and went 75 yards before Romo hit WR Patrick Crayton with a pass across the middle in a play that resulted in a 10-yard touchdown. The 49ers responded with a drive to the Dallas 18-yard line but once again were forced to settle for a field goal. The 49ers appeared to get a break later in the third quarter when LB Manny Lawson picked off a lateral pass behind the line of scrimmage for a first down at the Dallas 17-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Hill s attempt to the end zone was intercepted by CB Anthony Henry to end the scoring threat. Dallas increased its lead to 32-6 early in the fourth quarter before the 49ers finally reached the end zone with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Hill to WR Isaac Bruce, who finished the game with eight receptions for 125 yards. The 49ers recovered an onsides kick on the ensuing kickoff but were penalized for being off-sides. Even after being pushed back to the 25-yard line, the 49ers tried again for an onsides kick, but Dallas recovered to set up a field goal that extended their lead to lead. Hill, who had his first 300-yard game by finishing 21-of-33 for 303 yards, moved the 49ers to the Dallas nine-yard line before throwing a touchdown pass to RB DeShaun Foster on the next series. Dallas recovered the 49ers onsides kick attempt and ran out the final 3:45 to secure the victory. 49ers Cowboys ers Nedney 23 FG 2:39 (10-75) 49ers Nedney 22 FG 0:00 (5-47) Cowboys Owens 75 pass from Romo (Folk kick) 13:54 (3-77) Cowboys Punt blocked by Polk out of bounds in end zone for Safety 12:02 Cowboys Folk 48 FG 7:23 Cowboys Folk 41 FG 3:02 (6-57) Cowboys Bennett 1 pass from Romo (Folk kick) 0:52 (5-19) Cowboys Crayton 10 pass from Romo (Folk kick) 12:04 (7-75) Cowboys Nedney 35 FG 8:23 (8-42) 49ers Folk 47 FG 14:49 (12-51) 49ers Bruce 18 pass from S.Hill (Nedney kick) 8:20 (5-80 Cowboys Folk 42 FG 5:06 (6-17) 49ers Foster 9 pass from S.Hill (pass failed) 3:46 (4-57) 49ers Gore 14-26, S.Hill 1-0.
