Legendary Rebel Head Coach John Vaught and his football team not only put together the only perfect season in the history of Ole Miss foobtall, but they also captured the Litkenhous Ratings national title and their fifth SEC championship. The season s highlight came when the Rebels were invited to the prestigious Sugar Bowl, where they defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks Vaught garnered SEC Coach of honors. Those associated with the 1962 team donated the funds for the Walk of arch, located at the entrance to the Grove near the Student Union plaza. The site is the route for the football team s traditional walk through The Grove on game days. It was dedicated in the fall of The purpose of the arch is to remind all athletes that they play for national championships, SEC championships and Ole Miss pride. The names of the coaches, players, trainers and managers who won the hearts of Rebel fans with their spirit and tenacity are listed on a plaque. Joe Wilkins, Larry Leo Johnson and I first discussed the idea of an arch in the fall of 1997 while we were visiting in the Grove, and we agreed to purse it, said Samuel W. Owen of Nashville, a member of the 1962 team. We want the arch to stand as a symbol of what can be accomplished with teamwork, loyalty and trust REVIEW 131

8 SEC Western Division 7 Straight Winning Seasons MEMPHIS Game #2 September 6, 2003 Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium (51,914) Memphis, Tenn. Danny Wimprine threw for 355 yards and three touchdowns as Memphis beat Ole Miss, 44-34, at the Liberty Bowl. Wimprine threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to DeAngelo Williams for one score and Williams, who Bill Flowers had 135 yards rushing, also scored on runs of 19 and 20 yards. But it was a 92-yard touchdown pass from Wimprine to Tavarious Davis with just over six minutes to play that put Memphis (2-0) ahead for good. Under pressure and Eric Oliver off balance in his own end zone, Wimprine hit Davis near midfield, and Davis outran the defense to give the Tigers a lead. Wimprine finished 18-of- 33. It marked the first Memphis win over the Rebels (1-1) since 1994, and the most points ever scored by Memphis in the 53-game series. 10 SEC Western Division 7 Straight Winning Seasons TEXAS TECH Game #4 September 27, 2003 Vaught-Hemingway Stadium (54,649) Oxford, Miss. Despite more than 400 yards of passing from senior quarterback Eli Manning, and scoring on seven of eight drives, the Ole Miss Rebels were unable to hold off a late rally from visiting Texas Tech, as the Red Raiders downed the Rebels, 49-45, in Oxford. Ole Miss led the game, 45-34, with 8:01 to go, and seemingly had the game in hand, when Eli Manning Texas Tech quarterback B.J. Ole Miss would drive the length of the field in an attempt to reclaim the lead and the win, but Manning s pass to Mike Espy was picked off by Ryan Aycock at the Texas Tech 11, sealing the win for the Red Raiders. Manning finished the day 29- Jonathan Nichols of-49 for 409 yards with two interceptions. His first interception came at the hands of Vincent Meeks in the endzone in the second quarter, thwarting a Rebel scoring attempt. 11 20 #24 FLORIDA 17 Game #5 October 4, 2003 Ben Hill Griffin Stadium (90,101) Gainesville, Fla. Vashon Pearson scored on a one-yard TD run with 1:10 remaining and Eric Oliver intercepted a pass with 29 seconds left to lift Ole Miss to a win over No. 24 Florida in Gainesville. The Gators (3-3, 1-2 Von Hutchins Southeastern Conference) lost consecutive games at The Swamp for the first time since , and a oncestoried program was shut out in the second half for the second straight year by Ole Miss (3-2, 2-0). The Rebels beat Florida last year in Oxford when the Gators Vashon Pearson were ranked No. 6 in the nation. Senior QB Eli Manning was 17-of-29 passing for 262 yards and was intercepted once. He directed a late, eight-play, 50-yard scoring drive that consumed 4:02 off the clock and resulted in Pearson s game-winning score. 16 SEC Western Division 7 Straight Winning Seasons #20 24 AUBURN 20 Game #10 November 8, 2003 Jordan-Hare Stadium (86,063) Auburn, Ala. The breaks finally turned Ole Miss way. After two possible TD passes were dropped that could have helped the Rebels win in their early-season losses to Memphis and Texas Tech, Auburn s Ben Obomanu dropped the possible gamewinning TD pass in the end zone on third-and-goal. Then on fourth-and-goal, junior Eric Oliver broke-up Jason Eric Oliver Campbell s pass, and Eli Manning was able to take one snap from center and run out the clock to lift Ole Miss to a win over Auburn in a key SEC Western Division game that was televised nationally by CBS. The victory was the Rebels (8-2) sixth straight and gave them their first 6-0 start in the Lorenzo Townsend SEC since Ole Miss tied the game at 17 early in the fourth quarter when Jonathan Nichols capped a 10-play march with a 42-yard field goal. The field goal was the 41st of his career to tie the Ole Miss career record set by Brian Lee and it also moved him past Deuce McAllister and into first place on the school s career scoring list with 248 points. The Tigers would answer on their ensuing possession, moving 56 yards in 10 plays to take a lead on Philip Yost s 30-yard field goal. 17 #3 LSU 17 #15 14 Game #11 November 22, 2003 Vaught-Hemingway Stadium (62,552) Oxford, Miss. Stellar defense, just enough offense and a little good fortune kept LSU in the hunt for a national championship - and No. 15 Ole Miss from clinching its first SEC West title. The No. 3 Tigers held Eli Manning and the high-scoring Rebels in check for three quarters, then withstood a fourthquarter rally to earn a Travis Johnson victory. Matt Mauck threw two touchdown passes for LSU (10-1, 6-1), which now controls the SEC West race and can clinch its second trip to the conference title game in three years with a victory over Arkansas. Ole Miss (8-3, 6-1) had its chances to pull off a second straight fourth-quarter comeback victory. Justin Wade Jonathan Nichols, who had missed only one of 24 field-goal attempts coming in, was wide right on a 36-yarder that would have tied the game at 17 with 4:15 left. The Rebels got one last chance with 2:15 left, but Manning was incomplete on three straight passes and on fourth down he was tripped pulling away from center by one of his linemen. Manning was 16-for-36 for 200 yards with a touch- down and an interception. He was sacked three times. Mauck was 16-for-29 for 189 yards, but threw three interceptions that helped keep Ole Miss close while gaining only 98 yards through three quarters. Travis Johnson picked off Mauck's pass on LSU's first play and returned it 6 yards for a touchdown to give Ole Miss a 7-0 lead. The Rebels, who came into the game the SEC in scoring at 37 points per game, didn't score again until the fourth quarter. Mauck found Devery Henderson deep for a 53-yard touchdown strike early in the fourth quarter that put LSU up, Manning threw high and deep down the side line to Bill Flowers, who made an over the shoulder grab for 43 yards to the LSU 20. Manning converted on third down again moments later, beating the blitz with a 10-yard flip for a touchdown to Brandon Jacobs that made it with 10:51 left. After an LSU three-and-out, Manning started moving the Rebels again on a drive reminiscent of the one that produced the winning TD against Auburn two weeks ago. He hit Flowers for 30 yards to get the Rebels to the LSU 40 and a couple of good runs by Tremaine Turner had them at the 18. That's where the drive stalled and the Rebels brought on Nichols, who missed and LSU held on to the lead. A record-breaking crowd of 62,552 packed Vaught- Hemingway Stadium for the most anticipated game ever played in Oxford and the Rebels kept them rocking early with Johnson's touchdown. But LSU took over from there, led by the No. 1 scoring defense in the country. The Rebel defense was led by senior LB Justin Wade with 13 tackles (nine solo). 18 SEC Western Division 7 Straight Winning Seasons 31 MISSISSIPPI STA TE 0 Game #12 November 27, 2003 Scott Field (53,582) Starkville, Miss. Eli Manning passed for 260 yards and three touchdowns and the Rebel defense shutout Mississippi State in a 31-0 victory Thanksgiving night, in the 100th meeting between the Magnolia state rivals. The victory secured the Charlie Anderson Rebels (9-3, 7-1 SEC) at least a share of the SEC Western Division title. Mississippi State ended its season at Ole Miss outgained the Bulldogs, Mississippi State did not top the 100-yard mark in total offense until early in the fourth quarter. During one stretch, the Lawrence Lilly Rebels held Mississippi State to without a first down on eight straight offensive series. Ole Miss also stopped the Bulldogs on 10 consecutive third-down opportunities, and the Bulldogs were just 2-of-14 on third down conversions on the evening. The shutout was the Rebels' first against the Bulldogs since Only two lost fumbles by Manning in Mississippi State territory kept the game from getting completely out of hand early. Manning found Tremaine Turner in the back of the end zone for a 25-yard score late in the first quarter and got a lot of help from backup tight end Lawrence Lilly on an 11-yard TD pass in the second quarter. Lilly had to reach behind him for the throw and tipped the ball. The ball then hit off a defender and Lilly reached into a crowd to cradle it in for a 14-0 lead with 8:40 in the half. Chris Collins caught Manning's third TD pass late in the third quarter, breaking a tackle and scooting 23 yards to make it Collins caught eight passes for 113 yards and Manning finished 19-for-27, improving to 2-1 in Egg Bowls. Senior DE Charlie Anderson led the defensive effort with eight hits (four solo). The Rebels also recorded three sacks on the evening, including 1.5 by junior Cory Robinson. 19 #16 31 #21 OKLAHOMA STA TE 28 Game #13 - Classic January 2, 2004 The Cotton Bowl (73,928) Dallas, Texas After a 42-year hiatus, the Rebels made a triumphant return to Dallas as 16th-ranked Ole Miss claimed a win over 21stranked Oklahoma State in the 2004 playing of the. Eli Manning led the charge for the Rebels as the senior quarterback and Heisman finalist passed for 259 yards and three touchdowns on his way to Offensive MVP honors as he rallied the Rebels from a 14-7 Eli Manning deficit in the second quarter. Manning finished the day 22- of-31 with one interception and two touchdown passes. Both teams traded punches early before Ole Miss drew first blood, scoring the first points of the game when Tremaine Turner took a 16 yard pass from Manning into the endzone at the 4:55 mark to give the Rebels a 7-0 lead after Jonathan Nichols connected on the PAT attempt. Oklahoma State struck right Josh Cooper back, scoring on the next possession when Vernand Morency capped off a 69-yard drive with afour-yard touchdown run to tie the game with 1:17 to go in the first quarter. Oklahoma State took the first, and only, lead of the game as the Cowboys scored again early in the second quarter. Tatum Bell scampered into the endzone from three yards out to put the Cowboys up 14-7 after the successful PAT attempt from Luke Phillips at the 11:30 mark. The Rebels struck back quickly, though, tying the game on a 25 yard strike to Mike Espy from Manning to tie the game at 14 with 8:30 left in the first half. Ole Miss then took the lead for good when Nichols, the Lou Groza Award winner as the nation s best kicker, split the uprights with a 33-yard field goal to give the Rebels a halftime advantage. The Rebels came out after the break and continued to attack on the offensive side of the ball as Ole Miss increased the lead to 10 points when Tremaine Turner took the ball into the endzone on a two-yard run. The Ole Miss defense, led by Cotton Bowl Defensive MVP Josh Cooper, gave the Rebel offense the boost it needed, keeping the Cowboys out of the endzone and out of field goal range for the duration of the third quarter, and allowing Ole Miss the time it needed to build what would prove to be an insurmountable lead. Ole MIss extended its lead in the fourth quarter when Manning kept the ball on a one-yard run into the endzone to end a 97-yard drive that took 5:16 off the clock and gave the Rebels a lead, the largest of the game for Ole Miss. The Cowboys weren t done, though, as Oklahoma State charged right back at the Rebels, cutting into the lead with a scoring drive of its own that saw Morency take the ball into the endzone from one yard out to trim the Ole Miss lead to 10 points. Ole Miss was challenged once again, as the Cowboys mounted another drive, moving the ball 78 yards in 1:45 to cut the lead to three as Rashaun Woods took a 17-yard pass from Josh Fields into the endzone to pull Oklahoma State within three points at Manning and the Ole Miss offense went to work in the final 4:38, closing out the game with a drive that started at the Ole Miss 20 yard line and ended when time expired with the Rebels at the Oklahoma State 15 yard line. With the victory, the Rebels celebrated the first Cotton Bowl appearance since 1962 with a win over a nationally ranked program from the Big 12 and capped off the first 10-win season for the program since 1971 and improved the Rebels to a 2-1 record in the Cotton Bowl.
