Educational Grant Procedures 10 VINYL DIVISION GOVERNANCE 11 Sponsors 12 SPE NAMES NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Announcement Received January 19, 2012 Willem (Wim) DeVos, former CEO of Vitalo Group, has been hired to replace Susan Oderwald, who left SPE in December. A resident of Belgium, Wim obtained an engineering degree in Polymer Chemistry from Industriele Hogeschool CTL in Gent, Belgium, and his executive MBA from Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School. He began his career at Eurocompound, a leading European supplier of rubber emulsion compounds and coatings to the textile, automotive, and paper industries. In our worldwide search for a new CEO, we were delighted to find in Wim a 20 year Veteran of the plastics industry who is already active in, understands our Society has a truly global perspective, and brings outstanding management experience at a time when SPE is focused on growth, said Russell Broome, SPE s President.

2 2012 ANTEC Greetings Vinyl DivisionTechnical Program Committee Please excuse my delay in sending out the minutes from the ANTEC TPC meeting. I took a mini TPC vacation. Attached find the minutes from our meeting on April 2 and the current roster. Let me know if you find any errors. Yes, the first thing you may have noticed is that I am still acting as TPC Chairman. Emily McBride has a family medical issue that she is focused on and she cannot take the Chairmanship at this time. We all wish Emily the best. Rhonda Rogers-Agent was elected secretary and Becky Brewer has offered to assist the Chairman. If you were not at ANTEC, you should have been. The presentations were very well done. Bill Arndt presented a great paper on Dibenzoate blend plasticizers. Don Witenhafer presented a new look at the age old concern of PVC fusion. George Paleos presented a novel approach to evaluating printability on flexible sheet. Laurant Matuana presented a study of PVC foam fiber filled vs. other polymers. Jay Thomas showed how PVC roofing can be recycled achieve high marks for sustainability. Richard Krock presented the latest data on combustibility (or lack thereof) of PVC powder. All in all, a small but high quality program. In addition the evening reception that we co-hosted with PMAD was well attended and a highlight of the ANTEC for all who were there. I want to call your attention to the importance of ANTEC. This is our chance to reach out to engineers and technicians working with other polymers and also to many technical polymer users (potential customers!) who are at the ANTEC. I had a personal epiphany this year. I realized that we can do much more to promote Vinyl at the ANTEC than we can at our Vinyltec. Now don t get me wrong, I am not downplaying the importance of Vinyltec one bit. Vinyltec is the perfect opportunity for us to come together to discuss what is new in Vinyl. However, we also need to have a greater presence at ANTEC where we can promote Vinyl outside of our own group. We need to be telling the new plastics professionals that they cannot believe all they hear about Vinyl from the environmentalists and news media. If we are not out shouting about the advantages of Vinyl, I guarantee no one else will be. I am personally committing to reach out for Vinyl papers to present at ANTEC that show Vinyl in a good light environmentally and demonstrate the ability of Vinyl to reach into new applications. Please join me. Robert G. Weiler, North America Sales Manager - rweiler@amfine.net Cell Phone: Amfine Chemical Corp. 10 Mountain View Road, Suite 215N Upper Saddle River, NJ Dear Division Chairs: On behalf of SPE HQ, I would like to thank all of the Divisions that donated to the ANTEC 2012 Student Activities Fund. We raised over $30K, which was almost $9K more than in If you would like to receive your Certificate of Appreciation for donating please me back with your mailing address. I would like addresses from the following Divisions: Thermoforming Automotive Injection Molding Marketing/Management Vinyl Color and Appearance PMAD Best Regards: Lauren McCarthy Society of Plastics Engineers 13 Church Hill Rd. 6 Councilor s Report - Don Witenhafer This was the 70th ANTEC and the 75th NPE, so quite a celebration. Jim Griffing took the helm as President of SPE, and Willem de Vos continued to greet members as the new CEO. The NPE proved to be the heaviest exhibit ever at the Orange County Convention Center, with more equipment on exhibit than recent years. Reflections on the past year in SPE Russell Broome reflected on the many challenges and changes during his tenure. He noted SPE volunteer leadership appointed a focused position for Membership. Additionally, SPE saw its second consecutive year of growth in retained earnings. The LinkedIn site now has almost 16,000 members, a strong source for future members. The Education Committee is focused on delivering technical information through webinars, topical conferences, etc. This year saw EUROTEC deliver over 200 papers to 330 attendees with net proceeds of $65k. The SPE hired Wim De Vos to manage staff as CEO. He was a member of SPE already, active over 20 years, bringing global experience. Financial Review - Vijay Boolani, SPE Treasurer, and Willem de Vos reviewed the SPE finances over the past 12 years, highlighting the improvements over the past 4 years. Since 2009, the Foundation has been included in the overall financial analysis added $155k to retained earnings. Bylaws - Len Czuba presented the first reading of changes to the bylaws reflecting the change in job title for the Executive Director to the function chief staff representative. The changes were recommended by the SPE attorney and endorsed by the Executive Committee. The recommendation will be published in Plastics Engineering magazine for action at a future Council meeting. The bylaws will also be updated to correct the address to Newtown, CT (instead of Brookfield, CT). As a minor change, it does not require Council action. Events and Membership - Tom Conklin discussed new membership types which were announced at the last Council meeting: Young Professional (under 30 but not students) and Senior Members (10+ consecutive years of membership). Continuing membership types are Professional Member, Student and Emeritus Members, Member Distinctions of Fellow, Honored Service, etc. The AVECTRA membership database software has been challenging, especially for joining and renewing as well as group membership reporting. The software was chosen for its out-of-the-box functionality as well as for cost constraint, but some issues may require an upgrade. ANTEC Mumbai, India, will be held December 6-7, 2012 at the Renaissance in Mumbai. Barbara Arnold-Ferret introduced Rick Wagner as the incoming Divisions Committee chair. Barbara noted the challenge in recruiting and developing new leaders. She noted that only two Divisions did not meet the requirements for outstanding division. Council II Operating Plan - President Griffing presented his operating plan. They were little changed from last year. The plan was approved by Council. Jim s word for is integrate, the task for integrating all of last year s change into the SPE fabric. Moreover, integration of people into the organization is itself member driven. The new CEOwill also be integrated into the SPE activity, utilizing his fresh perspective, helping him be the SPE face globally. Across the world, SPE content is used to facilitate plastics developments. But some of the best information is in the heads of members. Thus, the SPE experience opens a broad opportunity for connecting and sharing information. Korea Section - The Korea Section will have a 1-day conference June 22 in Korea and invited all to attend. Next Meeting - The Next Council meeting will be September 15, 2012, in Dearborn, MI. 6
