Shearman & Sterling has worked with the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) for the past 12 years, and over 120 lawyers have completed 1-month externships at the ICTR during this time. We have covered legal issues such as the intersection of free speech and incitement to genocide which have provided the opportunity for us to play a role in shaping new law. Our lawyers have participated Vault.com Inc.
4 as faculty in trial advocacy training programs at the ICTR, merging traditional trial advocacy techniques with the latest trial support technology and the use of electronic media in the courtroom. Also the firm s lawyers provided pro bono assistance to prosecutors at the International Criminal Court and to Civil Parties before the Extraordinary Chambers of the Courts of Cambodia. In Cambodia, we will assist in representing more than 50 civil parties throughout the investigation/trial phases of a case involving the main leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime. At the ICC, our volunteers have worked with trial attorneys in the Office of the Prosecutor to assist in preparing for the first-ever trial at that court involving the enlistment of child soldiers. Shearman & Sterling lawyers in London, New York and Washington, DC have been working with Climate Bonds Initiative, a London-based charity promoting investment in a low-carbon economy to help develop the Climate Bond Standard, a screening tool for investors and governments to support investment in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Institutional investors such as pension funds and sovereign wealth funds have become aware of these issues with a growing number of them favoring green investments. Shearman & Sterling finalized an agreement between SK Films and Fondo Mexicano para la Conservacion de la Naturaleza ( Fondo or FMCN ) cementing FMCN s role as a participant and advisor for and exclusive manager of all conservation fundraising programs related to the IMAX film Flight of the Butterflies. The film, almost complete, will trace the migration of the Mariposa butterflies from Toronto to Mexico and back each year. Shearman & Sterling attorneys volunteer at a variety of clinics in New York, DC and the Bay Area with issues involving: veteran s and SSI benefits, housing, family law, small business start-ups, artists, domestic violence and criminal matters. On several occasions, clinics have been staffed jointly with in-house counsel. List up to three pro bono matters that are highlights (e.g., a Supreme Court case). Please limit your answer to a short paragraph per matter. Shearman & Sterling, co-counseling with Legal Aid, overturned the 1993 murder conviction of an innocent man, sentenced to life in prison by a Bronx jury for a crime he did not commit. The sole evidence presented at trial was the testimony, rife with inconsistencies, of one eyewitness who said she saw armed defendants exiting a car on the street four stories below. No physical evidence corroborated the testimony. Always maintaining his innocence, the defendant s fortune turned in 2006 when Southern District New York Judge Kaplan granted his co-defendant s habeas motion, finding that evidence not put before the jury placed the co-defendant overseas on the night of the murder. We began investigating and the team s work lead to a cohesive story about a vulnerable, troubled woman threatened by an NYPD detective into identifying the accused. At the 440 hearing, that story was told to the court for the first time, culminating in the recantation of the witness s trial testimony and her chilling plea to the defendant for forgiveness. Kenya is adapting to many legal changes, such as constitutional reform and the implementation of a new Sexual Offences Act (the SOA ) to increase legal protections for all Kenyans. In partnership with longstanding clients Viacom International Media Networks and Lawyers Without Borders, Shearman & Sterling produced educational materials designed to increase public understanding of gender-based violence and the new rights and obligations of Kenyans under the SOA. Our team obtained permission to design our materials using the characters, storyline and distribution platform of Shuga: Love, Sex, Money, a TV drama that premiered across Africa on Valentine s Day Produced by MTV Networks Africa in association with other entities, Shuga is part of a ground-breaking multimedia campaign conceived to achieve a generation of young people without HIV. Shuga addresses taboo topics such as rape and sexfor-gifts, told through the lives of realistic characters and emotional situations drawn from real life. Launching a small business in today s economic climate can prove difficult, or even impossible, for low- and midincome aspiring micro-entrepreneurs. The Neighborhood Entrepreneur Law Project (NELP), an initiative launched by the New York City-based City Bar, has been supported by a number of Shearman & Sterling lawyers who have helped aspiring small business owners realize their goals. NELP s goal is to provide the legal services necessary to help micro-entrepreneurs get their businesses off to a good start. Our partners and associates have been volunteering at the small business clinics, held at various locations since On several occasions, clinics have been staffed jointly with in-house counsel. These clinics offer basic legal guidance on questions relating to business structure, incorporation, contracts, commercial leasing, and intellectual property. Our attorneys have also assisted NELP with presentations on various business topics.
