The Saville Center, Inc. Celebrates 10 Years! By Diane Coffey, Bill Thompson & Barbara Gish This year, as The Saville Center celebrates its 10th anniversary, we ve been looking back at how it all began, and looking forward to even greater goals in the future. We d like to share some of those stories with you, our loyal supporters. The Child Advocacy Center of Payne County, originally located on S. Monroe. In 1992 a young boy named Ryan Luke died as a result of child abuse. Many service providers knew of the family problems but were unable to communicate with one another due to the confidentiality issues of each agency involved. In 1996 the Ryan Luke Bill mandated anyone involved in child abuse investigation should do joint investigations to reduce trauma to the child. Multidisciplinary teams across the state formed and advocacy centers became the linchpin for teams and abuse victims to come together in a homelike, child friendly environment. In 1997 the Payne County Child Abuse Response, Evaluation and Support (CARES) Multidisciplinary Team was formed, consisting of DHS/CPS, law enforcement, the District Attorney s office, medical and mental health professionals.. In April 1998, through the efforts of the Payne County Bar Association and coordinated by Barbara Gish and Peggy McCormick, a Child Watch Tour was conducted involving thirty 2 local residents. In September, 1998, the Stillwater Medical Center made available a house at 636 S. Monroe, which became the first Child Advocacy Center of Payne County. Some of the highlights of our 10 year journey include the hiring of Executive Director, Teresa Tully; she has been an instrumental part of our success from early on until the present. The Saville Center was able to gain state and national accreditation and became a United Way agency. We were fortunate to gain public funding provided by the state as a result of the Child Abuse Multidisciplinary Account (CAMA) bill signed into law in 2000, largely through the efforts of Sen. Mike Morgan and a generous donation of approximately $60,000 was made by Dorothy Saville. As the Center grew, realtor Grace Provence discussed our needs with Mr. Allen Grady, and he agreed to sell the property at 9th and Walnut to us for less than the appraised value. The Grady family also donated many furnishings, some of which were sold at a garage sale, benefiting the Center. At closing, Mr. Grady made an additional donation of $5000. The Saville Center s facilities at 9th & Walnut. The outpouring of support from the community has been almost unbelievable! During a Day of Caring, the Stillwater Homebuilders Association members got us started on renovations of our new house, and many organizations have continued to give us their time (and sweat!) through the years. The Pi Beta Phi sorority and the local Alumnae Club provided invaluable help to the Center by volunteering countless renovation hours and providing furnishings for the living room. Volunteers from United Way s Day of Caring have built fences, planted gardens, painted, and even re-insulated the attic at The Saville Center! Paying off of our mortgage was a major milestone as fundraisers and other private donations helped us accomplish that goal. Then, the garage was converted into a Training and Conference room, due to the efforts of Toni Stone, who spearheaded the planning. She, along with Bill Thompson and others, secured donations to cover the cost of this major renovation. The final significant highlight of our growth has been the success of our annual fundraiser, Champagne and Diamonds. This is due to the efforts of our many consistent donors and sponsors! Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed to our success!

Pediatric SANE Program to Help Sexual Assault Victims Stillwater Medical Center, with help from The Saville Center have provided pediatric SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) training to two registered nurses. Like the SANE Program utilized by Stillwater Domestic Violence Services and other agencies, the Pediatric SANE Program will minimize the trauma experienced by children during sexual abuse medical evaluations by providing nurses who are educated, knowledgeable and sensitive to the developmental, emotional, and cultural needs of abused children and their families. The Pediatric SANE Program is invaluable, and funding sources are being explored by Stillwater Domestic Violence Services and The Saville Center through various granting agencies. Ongoing funding will be needed to purchase and maintain a piece of state-of-the-art equipment that will significantly aid in the care and treatment of sexual abuse victims, the colposcope, which costs approximately $20,000. With extreme magnification capacities, the colposcope allows the detection of even the smallest injuries. It has the ability to take color photographs and video which can make a tremendous impact on a victim s case. Examiners can usually only see about 25-5o% of victim s injuries with the naked eye, but a colposcope provides more than 80% visibility. Nurses with SANE training perform the examinations utilizing the colposcope. These nurses are also trained to testify in a court of law and report their findings. The SANE program also works with the CARES team to ensure that children s needs are being met. If you would like to support this program, please call The Saville Center at (405)

FROM THE DESK OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, TERESA TULLY Looking back over the past ten years, I am struck by how far we ve come and how far we can go in the future. My memories are of challenges, of goals and of extraordinary rewards. In 1998, The Saville Center was an organization of firsts - the first community meeting, the first board meeting, the first volunteers and advisors. My own knowledge of the Center was in regards to the tremendous community support they had already gotten. I had heard stories of board members so dedicated they worked themselves sick during one particularly rigorous Day of Caring that required the demolition of three layers of carpet at our free-lease facilities on Monroe Street! By 1999, I was interviewing for the position of Executive Director - and first employee ever - of The Saville Center. What a challenge the interviewers encountered when the air conditioner wasn t working in July in Oklahoma! We persevered and eventually began to outfit our new organization to make it a homelike, child-friendly environment for children. I didn t realize just how child-friendly we had managed to make it until the day we had a forensic interview of a fourteen-year-old boy! Realizations like this have helped us tweak and perfect how we do things around here -knowledge gained by invaluable experience; and, these challenges have made us appreciate even more the vast progress made over such a short course of time. Our team has experienced similar growing pains through the years, starting as all-encompassing group of concerned professionals who have now refined a protocol and purpose. Group trainings, like the one held in Huntsville, AL allowed initial team members to make a plan of action and the introduction of a forensic interviewer helped solidify the focus of the Center. We have had countless helpers over the years, even down to the meals we provide our team during their lunch hour (thanks Junior Service League)! I ll never forget the hard work we ve put into this organization - from sorority girls scraping wallpaper to board members freely giving their time to organize a fundraiser, but the realization of what we ve managed to accomplish is staggering, and a true symbol of hope for the years to come! As you can see, fluctuations in caseloads greatly affect the number of services provided by The Saville Center in a given year. However, since 2001, our center has served over 1,800 children and families and provided 526 forensic interviews! 4

Meet the Staff... Holly Shelton-Victim/Family Advocate Holly has a bachelor s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Oklahoma. She completed her practicum with the YWCA as a sexual assault advocate and knows how important it is to provide support to sexual assault victims and their families. On October 17, 2007 Holly began work as the Victim/Family Advocate at The Saville Center. During the past year, she has assisted over one hundred non-offending caregivers. Helping them connect with services in the community provides support to those who protect the child in the aftermath of an abuse report. During her free time, Holly enjoys spending time with her boyfriend Colt, an OSU police officer, and their two dogs, Roonie and Oliver. Sonya Franks-Administrative Assistant Recently relocated to Stillwater from NE Oklahoma, Sonya s previous work experience at an intercity non-profit agency assisting the homeless has prepared her for the important work at The Saville Center. Sonya has a BS in Business Administration/Management of Human Resources from Oklahoma Wesleyan University and is married to Chris, an OSU alumni with an Environmental Sciences degree. Between them, they have three children: the oldest is a high school senior and has been offered a scholarship to OSU, and the two youngest attend elementary school in Stillwater. Earlier in her career Sonya worked as an Administrative Assistant in the medical field of psychiatry and worked closely with a multidisciplinary treatment team. Sonya says, I have worked within Geriatric and adult programs, its only natural that now the focus is on helping children. I love being a part of such an important process. Vicki Boan Forensic Interview Specialist Vicki has a Master s in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma with studies directed towards obtaining a licensure for counseling. She currently is an independent forensic interviewer/trainer with Oklahoma Interviewing Services, which provides interviewing services for Child Advocacy Centers and multi-disciplinary teams across Oklahoma. Mrs. Boan is also a member of the Finding Words of Oklahoma faculty, conducting training to multidisciplinary teams in Oklahoma. She has been a forensic interviewer for over 4 years and has conducted over 800 forensic interviews. Maria Rosales-Lambert Forensic Interview Specialist Maria is currently the Program Director and the Bi-lingual Forensic Interviewer at Oklahoma Interviewing Services, INC (OIS) where she provides forensic interviews in English and Spanish, as well as training for law enforcement agencies, Department of Human Services (DHS) and Child Advocacy Centers (CAC) throughout the state of Oklahoma. Ms. Rosales-Lambert currently serves as a faculty member with the National Children s Advocacy Center and Finding Words Oklahoma. Ms. Rosales-Lambert started her own business, The INTERVIEWER, LLC in 2004, conducting interviews and trainings in Oklahoma and nationally. She herself has been specifically trained on interviewing children, as well as interpreting and culture issues. Ms. Rosales-Lambert has an Associate Degree in Police Science and worked for more than two years with a CAC in Oklahoma City as the Bi-lingual Forensic Interviewer. She was a Police Officer for five years with the Ft Smith Police Department in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Ms. Rosales-Lambert is a native of Mexico. Jennifer Smith - Intern, 2009 Spring Semester Jen will be graduating in May 2009 from Oklahoma State University with a Masters of Science in Human Development and Family Science, Child and Family Services option. Upon completion of her degree, she will be prepared to work with children and families. Jen s particular interest is working with abused children and victims of crime. As a part of her graduate requirements, she is developing a program recommendation for The Saville Center for children who are asked to testify in criminal court. This program is called The Court School Program and will be designed to help reduce the stress and trauma children experience when testifying in criminal court. Both children and their caregivers will benefit from the program by learning more about - and becoming more comfortable with - the court process. 5

A special thanks Dr. Stephen H. Miller Dr. Miller s Smiles for Life campaign through the Teammates for Kids Foundation has consistently provided funds for The Saville Center to purchase education materials for children and families. These materials, including coloring books like Keep Your Body Safe and pamphlets like Building a Stronger Family, have been distributed, not only to the individuals who visit The Saville Center, but also to families at health fairs, public events and even OSU classes! Without the generosity of Dr. Miller and his staff, much of the preventative outreach provided by the Center would suffer. Thank you for all you do! Pictured from left: Julie Tuck, Dr. Stephen H. 10 A word from our President, Todd Winters: In January of 2009, The Saville Center Board of Directors welcomed executive coach and consultant, Leo Presley to our annual Board Retreat. Dr. Presley helped us work on a draft of our strategic plan, focusing on our organization s goals for the future. Some of the topics discussed included addressing our core values, vision and mission statement. Ideas about the Center s services, community involvement and even diversification of revenue were examined. The Board was able to look at the organization s path, as well as appreciate all the hard work and good choices that the past ten years have benefited from. With our draft in place, we can now focus on perfecting, revising and implementing a strategic plan that will grow with the Center for years to come. From the Payne County Child Abuse Prevention Task Force Each year, Child Abuse Prevention Task Forces from across the state utilize April s Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month to inform their individual communities about the realities of child abuse. In the past, Payne County has presented pinwheels on the courthouse lawn as a visual reminder of each and every child affected by child abuse and neglect. This year, our Task Force is asking the community to participate in the Build a Blue Ribbon Tree for Kids campaign. We would like businesses, homes, and organizations to decorate a tree with blue ribbon(s). The blue ribbon is the international sign for child abuse prevention and serves as a constant reminder that all of us have a responsibility to help keep children safe. In Payne County we had 121 confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect in It is up to the individual how they want to decorate their tree. You can put 121 blue ribbons on a tree, you can wrap a big blue ribbon with a bow around a tree, or even build your own tree. The goal is to have the trees displayed for the whole month of April. For more information on preventing child abuse, visit Pi Beta Phi Sorority The Pi Phi s have painted and planted; they have modeled and maintained; they have decorated and dedicated! Identifying and meeting unmet needs of children and families is a challenging and worthy endeavor. We continue to equip individuals and families with the services they need to make life choices that help them lead safer, healthier, more independent and productive lives. These outcomes are achieved by everyday heroes: the individuals and families we serve; our employees; and the hundreds of federal, state and local partners who share our mission and commitment to stronger families and a brighter Oklahoma. ~Howard H. Hendrick, Director Oklahoma Department of Human Services To read the report in its entirety, go to The Saville Center is the first step in providing assistance to a child when there is an allegation of child abuse. When a case is reported to law enforcement or DHS and authorities suspect that abuse has occurred, the child is brought to the Center and interviewed by a professionally trained forensic interview specialist in a non-threatening environment. The interview is taped through one way mirrors and held for review or for possible use later in court. The Saville Center, centrally located, allows the CARES team, consisting of medical and mental health professionals, law enforcement, prosecutors and DHS child welfare to come together to jointly investigate and staff these cases of abuse. 11
