1 Summer 2018, Issue 2 A message from our president Hello Fellow LL alumni, On behalf of the LL Board of Trustees, we wanted to let you know about all the exciting things we have done so far in The Class of 2018 have heard from our local leaders and public services for Local Government Day and learned about all the amazing things our community has to offer for Quality of Life Day! They have also been hard at work with their community service projects, bringing much needed recognition to these wonderful organizations, more to come in the next newsletter. The Youth Leadership League had an incredible year and were able to connect with the community and create great programs to help local organizations and hone their leadership skills. We also had our Summer Board Retreat where one of the best facilitators, former VSU president, Ronald Zaccari, started us on the process of developing a strategic plan for Leadership Lowndes! We are extremely grateful for our alumni and sponsors. Without them we could not continue to develop and educate the current and future leaders of our community. Thanks again and if you have any ideas you would like to share please don t hesitate to let me know! Stan Crance Local Government Day The 2018 Class began its Local Government Day hearing the sounds of the bagpipes being played by members of the Valdosta Fire Department. Board member and Valdosta Fire Chief Freddie Broome explained to the group the responsibilities of the department. The group then visited Lowndes County Jail where Sheriff Ashley Paulk presented to the class and they toured the jail and 911 Center. The class even got to see some of the impressive equipment they use to protect and serve the citizens of Lowndes County. Mayor John Gayle and Commission Chairman Bill Slaughter took questions from the group during a lunch catered by Covington s. Gayle and Slaughter informed the group of the items and initiatives that City Council and County Commission discussed at their respective retreats to help improve the quality of life in Lowndes County. Next the group toured the Valdosta Crime Lab and heard a presentation from Police Chief Brian Childress and VPD s swat team. The presentation ended at the impressive Lowndes County Courtroom with a speech from Judge John Edwards about local courts.

Graduates of 2018 Youth League include, Laneigh Alford, Rosa Alvarado, Fola Asebiomo, Pierce Baker, Logan Best, Macee Chappuis, Emily Clifton, Sarah Cole, Jocelyn Frazier, Dallas Freeman, Mackenzie Gay, Madison Highsmith, Renee Hollingsworth, Shayla Jackson, Pate King, Olivia Lee, William Lester, Ryan McGee, Ashton Moorman, Mary Grace Nix, Chunjun Park, Talley Petermann, William Steinberg, Chase Stokes, Savannah Sumner, Colby Thomas, Lauren Voyles, Ian Willis, Jack Wilson and Hanna Yeager. We want to thank LYLL planning committee which includes Erin Willis, Tiffany Stewart, Tesha Larkins, Dana Richards, Deborah Paine, Meghan Barwick and Chad Case for their work with the future leaders of Valdosta and Lowndes County!

3 Quality of Life Day On May 17 despite the rain, the group got a fun filled day across Lowndes County to showcase all the great reasons why we live here. First visiting Hahira Train Depot to learn about revitalization of downtown Hahira then off to North Lowndes Park to hear about the new soccer complex, Miracle league and several other projects and services that Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recs offers to the community. Some entertainment was in store for the class so we headed to Wild Adventures to meet with animals and ride on a roller coaster; however, class member, Kevin Moore, needed a little more action so he suited up to take on the course at Valdosta Wake Compound. Next off to lunch at The Patterson, a premier venue for weddings and parties, to hear from several LL alum about the Turner Art Center, Main Street Valdosta, Historical Society, and the Tourism and Rainwater Conference Center. And, to round out the day we visited the Theatre Guild and had a quick tour of the Boys and Girls Club. By the end of the day everyone was ready to socialize at the beautiful clubhouse at Kinderlou.
