Please take a few minutes to look through the magazine to learn about Santander s first quarter results, our plans for the next few months, and how you can participate in our events. In June, we hold our Annual General Meeting (AGM) and your voting documents are enclosed with this dividend mailing. I would like to encourage everyone to complete and return their voting card as your votes are important to us. See details of how to claim your AGM free gift on page 5. Also enclosed with this mailing is the annual tax voucher for those shareholders who receive their dividend by mandate. On the front cover is a photograph of University of Guadalajara (Mexico) where the 2nd International Meeting of University Chancellors is to be held later this month. More details on this university collaboration, which is sponsored by Santander, are on page 7. Congratulations to Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton on a well-earned one-two finish at the Chinese Grand Prix last month. 5 Alfredo Sáenz Second Vice Chairman & CEO Profit rise of 6% to EUR million in 1st quarter Santander obtained attributable profit of EUR 2,215 million, 6% more than in the first quarter of This profit excludes extraordinary gains from the sale of assets. According to the Chairman Emilio Botín, Santander is demonstrating the advantages of its geographic and businesses diversification. Despite reduced economic growth, we have maintained our ability to generate recurrent profit and have improved our liquidity, efficiency and solvency. Some of the highlights of the first quarter results are: The Group continued to progress in its geographical diversification with Continental Europe contributing 47% of Group profit; Latin America, 35%; the U.K. 16% and Sovereign (U.S.) contributing 2% Growth in revenues of 11% significantly exceeded the increase in costs of 7% Attributable profit in the U.K. totalled 426 million (up 15%) More information on the Group s results visit RESULTS & AGM Annual General Meeting (AGM) The AGM will be held on 11 June in Santander, Northern Spain. Shareholders can view the proceedings at (see enclosed letter for details) from 9am British Summer Time. The Chairman would like to see all shareholders returning their completed voting cards this year so please return your card as soon as possible. This year you will be able to drop off your voting card at over 350 selected Santander and Alliance & Leicester branches. Those shareholders who return a voting card will have the chance to receive a free gift. Gifts may be collected from selected branches (see list on Proxy Card) in return for a completed form or if you return your voting form by post, your gift will be mailed to you. Gift stocks are limited so an early response is recommended. 5

6 Healthy Cities, Strong World Santander UK Shareholders introduce the 2010 ArtShare Photo Competition From 25 May until 20 August, Shareholders are encouraged to submit original photographic art that reflects how the individual artist views the city in which they live, in terms of strength and healthy spirit, which are some of the corporate values of Santander. In order to participate, contestants should submit their photographs in the highest possible resolution to All files must be in JPEG format and no larger than 1 MB. To successfully enter the contest, the following information MUST be included in the entry: Artist s personal information (name, age, address, phone number, ) Description and explanation of how the photo represents the strength and spirit of their city (maximum of 200 words) Winners will be announced at the end of July and will be awarded as follows: FIRST PLACE Fujifilm FinePix HS10 Digital Camera SECOND PLACE Samsung N310 Netbook THIRD PLACE ipod Touch 16GB The winning works will be decided by a board of judges from Santander UK Shareholders Relations. They will then be published in on 20 August. The Winners of the UK ArtShare photo competition and the top 50 finalist will then go on to be entered in a World competition. The 50 finalists will be announced and posted on this website at the end of August, 2010.

7 2nd International Meeting Universia Chancellors Guadalajara 2010, Mexico 31 May to 1 June For a socially responsible educational space in Latin America Universia, the largest network of Spanish and Portuguese speaking universities, is inviting its 1,100 academic institution members to reflect on the challenges facing Spanish and Latin American University in a society in economic crisis, immersed in a growing globalization process and undergoing a boom in scientific and technological knowledge never seen before in the history of mankind. With the Guadalajara Meeting, Latin American universities will commemorate the Bicentenaries of Latin American Nations Independence and will discuss higher education and knowledge as key factors for developing a balanced and inclusive development of our societies, as well as their contribution to the creation of a Latin American region of knowledge in a globalised world. Universia has extended the invitation to a large number of universities from China, the US, Morocco, the UK and Russia. UNIVERSIA Universia Universia currently has 1,124 member universities from 17 Spanish and Latin American countries. By May 2010 it will be present in all Spanish and Latin American countries and its membership will include the main higher education institutions. The overall purpose of Universia is to identify areas of common interest for groups of universities, in order to combine efforts to bring direct added value to the different university collectives at institutions and indirectly to all member institutions as a whole. 7

14 BRITISH GOLF TOUR 2010 The British Golf Tour 2010 The sunshine arrived just as our first regional shareholder golf tournament teed-off at The Belfry, Birmingham. Next stop was Celtic Manor and the Twenty-Ten course, the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup. Again we had glorious sunshine and some excellent golf. Dai Davies receiving his trophy from José Rojo 14 Shareholders who took part in the competitions have all enjoyed some fantastic golf, made new friends and raised a considerable amount of money along the way for Cancer Research. As we go to print, we still have to play Sunningdale, Archerfield and Lough Erne and I am sure that these events will be as enjoyable as the first two.
