1 Pacific Regional Conference March 16 18, 2017 Oakland, California Speakers list Elise Brickner-Schulz - Miller Nash Graham and Dunn, Portland, OR Elise Brickner-Schulz joined Miller Nash Graham & Dunn in Elise is an experienced paralegal in the practice areas of securities, corporate, and shareholder disputes; banking and financial institutions; litigation, arbitration, and mediation; products liability; and public policy and government. Elise has assisted in over 60 trials and has had extensive contact with clients. She has designed and implemented in-house litigation management systems, as well as coordinated and overseen 30 outside counsel to work on over 80 cases nationwide. She has also assisted in many of the firm's Pro Bono matters. Elise is responsible for workflow coordination and productivity for the firm s litigation associates. She is also involved in the firm s new associate training program, assists in training new litigation associates, and is a member of the firm s Pro Bono and Technology Committees as well as co-chair of the firm's Diversity Committee Elise.Bricknerschulz@MillerNash.com Loretta Calvert, Fullerton College Loretta Calvert started her legal career at Sullivan & Cromwell in NYC after completing her law school education at New York University. Loretta has been admitted to practice law in NY, AZ, TN, and CA. She has been the program director at Volunteer State Community College and currently teaches at Fullerton College. Her book, What the Good Student Said, is available through Amazon. Dayton, Fullerton College Steven Dayton is presently the program director for Fullerton College s ABA-approved Paralegal Studies Program in Fullerton, California, Past-President of AAfPE (2014), and currently serving by appointment as the assistant editor of AAfPE s publication, The Paralegal Educator. The Fullerton College Paralegal Studies program awards both an Associate in Science degree and a certificate to qualified graduates. In spring of 2016, Steve completed the two-day intensive academic training of E-Discovery software Relativity offered by kcura. sdayton@fullcoll.edu Dwight Dickerson, California State University, East Bay Dwight Dickerson is the Director of the Paralegal Studies Program at California State University East Bay in the Division of Continuing and Education and a former member of the ABA Standing Committee on Paralegals Approval Commission. Dwight is a member of the AAfPE Board of Directors representing the Pacific Region. Dwight has been a member of the faculty of the CSUEB Paralegal Studies Program since 1991, and is an instructor of Contract Law and Nonprofit Law on the CSUEB Hayward Hills campus. Dwight graduated from Brandeis University with honors majoring in American & Urban Studies and received his J. D. from the University of Michigan Law School. Dunlap, Esq., is the Director of Legal Education for UC San Diego Extension's ABA Approved Paralegal Certificate Program, the Intellectual Property Certificate Program, and the E-Discovery and Litigation Technology Management Certificate. Julia received her Bachelor of Art's degree in English from the University of California at Berkeley. She earned her Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of San Diego, School of Law, and became an active member of the California State Bar in In addition to her duties at UC San Diego, she is a sole practitioner specializing in estate planning. Julia has played an active role in paralegal education for over 18 years and she is currently the President of the American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE). jdunlap@ucsd.edu Dora Dye, City College of San Francisco Dora Dye has been a paralegal educator for over 25 years. She is currently the paralegal program coordinator and CurricUNET administrator at City College of San Francisco. Before that, she worked as a real estate/corporate paralegal for over 15 years at large San Francisco law firms. Dora received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Spanish from the University of California at Berkeley. 3 Cheryl Feiner, San Francisco State University Cheryl Feiner is a Supervising Deputy Attorney General at the Office of the California Attorney General. She supervises attorneys and paralegals in the Health, Education, and Welfare section of the Civil Division. For over 15 years, she has represented over 30 state agencies that administer a multitude of state health, education, and welfare programs. She practices in state and federal trial and appellate courts. Before joining the Attorney General's Office, Cheryl was in private practice. She received her undergraduate degree from UCLA, and her law degree from UC Hastings College of the Law. feiner.cheryl@gmail.com Janice Hollman, Portland Community College Janice Hollman brings more than 20 years of experience as a legal technologist to her role as head of kcura s Academic Partners program. Previously, she spent 15 years in information management with Nike, served as a project manager for an e-discovery vendor, and helped Grant Thornton leverage data analytics to identify tax credits for research and development. Janice received her B.S. from Cal State University, Northridge and her A.S. in Paralegal Studies from Portland Community College. Kennedy University Lisa S. Hutton is a Professor and serves as the Program Chair for the American Bar Association approved Bachelor s Degree in Legal Studies Program and Paralegal Certificate Programs at John K. Kennedy University in Pleasant Hill, California. Lisa teaches Introduction to Law and Capstone in the Bachelor s and Certificate Programs. Additionally, Lisa is currently serving her 8 th year as John F. Kennedy University s Faculty Senate President, the governing body for faculty at the University. lhutton@jfku.edu Juliet Jonas, John F. Kennedy University Juliet R. Jonas, Esq., is a core faculty member in John F. Kennedy University's Legal Studies program. Juliet earned her Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the UC Davis School of Law, and became an active member of the California State Bar in Juliet teaches Torts, Litigation I and II, and Legal Technology. In addition to Juliet's teaching duties at JFKU, she is a member of the JFKU Faculty Senate Executive Board, JFKU Diversity Council, a board member of the litigation section of the Contra Costa County Bar Association, and is on the newly formed Membership and Education Committee with the Contra Costa County Bar Association. 4 Douglas Lusk, National Society for Legal Technology Douglas Lusk is the Founder/CEO of National Society for Legal Technology (NSLT). Doug is also currently serving as Committee Chairman of the Legal Technology Committee of the Ready for Practice Section of the American Bar Association Law Student Division (try and fit that on a business card!). Doug s goal, as Founder of the NSLT, is to promote the need for on-going legal technology education in the legal industry as a whole and works to connect students with legal technology education resources. In November 2016, in recognition of the NSLT s new Legal Technology Certification program, the NSLT was a nominee for an Innovation in Legal Technology Education award at abovethelaw.com. In addition to his work and industry involvement, Doug attends law school part-time at the University of La Verne, College of Law in Ontario, California, where he is currently in his 3L year. She graduated from the Saint Mary's College Paralegal Program in Monica worked at Burnham Brown in Oakland (formerly Larson & Burnham) for 7 years, Archer Norris in Walnut Creek for over 16 years, and recently joined Shearman & Sterling LLP last October. She specializes in litigation and trial support/attendance, and is now working in white collar litigation, corporate law and pro-bono cases with the San Francisco Innocence Project. Monica also serves on the John F. Kennedy University Legal Studies Advisory Board and has been a guest speaker for the University s paralegal program on topics ranging from a paralegal's roles and responsibilities in the office, to selecting the appropriate trial software and the paralegal s role at trial. monica.mccallister@shearman.com Nicholas McGrue, El Camino College Nicholas McGrue teaches law full time at El Camino Community College in Torrance, CA. Nicholas received his Juris Doctorate degree from Pepperdine University School of Law and also holds an LLM in Taxation & Financial Services. He is licensed to practice law in both California and Washington State, and also holds a California Real Estate Broker s License. 5 Cindi Young - Chevron Corporation, San Ramon, CA Cindi Young is the Manager of Litigation Support SR, Enterprise Law, for Chevron in San Ramon, California. She earned an undergraduate degree at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and a JD from Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Prior to joining Chevron, Cindi worked in various recruiting and placement roles with national organizations. She started at Chevron in 1994, as a contract paralegal. She currently manages a group of 15 paralegals. Her reports are located in both San Ramon and Houston. Cindi s group supports the enterprise, providing paralegal support to attorneys in litigation, environmental and safety, corporate services, compliance and transactions.
