2 Ontario, Canada Champion of Hong Kong Cup Alumni in Toronto won the inter-university alumni ping-pong tournament and brought the Hong Kong Cup home. Joined by six alumni associations of Hong Kong universities in Toronto, the tournament ignited the sportsmanship of each participant. HKU alumni were particularly moved by the high spirit and the comradeship! 4 University Hall Alumni Limited The last few months saw the alumni busy with its activities. We hosted a dinner at the Hong Kong Club on January 3, 2011 in honour of U-Hallites Leong Che-hung (MBBS 1962; Hon DSc 2006), who has just been awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal, and John Chan Cho-chak (BA 1964; DipManStud 1971; Hon DSocSc 2011), who was just awarded a Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa by HKUST. Their immense contributions and unselfish devotion to voluntary public services afford good examples for all U-Hallites. Congratulations again! On January 10, we held a memorial gathering for our beloved former warden of the 60s to 70s and good friend, John Llewellyn, MBE, who passed away on December 10, 2010 at the ripe age of 95. Rest in peace, we will miss you fondly forever, John. We had our customary Sports Day on January 16. Marathon soccer, followed by curry and high soup lunch a guys meet, can t get better than this. At its 184th Congregation on March 22, the University conferred a Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa to John Chan Cho-chak and a Doctor of Science honoris causa to John Leong Chi-yan (MBBS 1965; Hon DSc 2011). Congratulations to those outstanding U-Hallites! U-Hall students and alumni showed up in good numbers with Sam So ( ) at the HKU-100 Kick-Off Ceremony on January 9, We must be one of the most attractive teams. 5 Alumni Networks Ricci Hall Old Boys Association Unveiling Ceremony for Matteo Ricci Statue The Ceremony was officiated by Rev Fr Deignan, S J (Hon DSocSc 2003) (2nd right), Superior of the Jesuits in Hong Kong, Rev Fr Ng Chi-fun (1st left), Warden of Ricci Hall, Dr Yuen Kar-ngai (MBBS 1978) (1st right), Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong Ricci Heritage Society, and Cheuk Chun (BEng(CivE), Year 3) (2nd left), Chairman of Ricci Hall Students Association. More than a hundred Ricci boys witnessed the unveiling of the bronze statue of Father Matteo Ricci on December 18, 2010, which marked the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the passing of Father Ricci, a forerunner of international exchanges and The Master from the West. The bronze statue, located in Ricci Hall, is one of the three created by Coke Wong Ka-long, a contemporary sculptor and a local artist who graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts with a major in sculpture. Every statue of Matteo Ricci, which took some six months to complete, is a combination of eastern and western culture, showing Ricci like a kind Chinese scholar dressed in Chinesestyle clothes. The first statue was unveiled at Fu Jen Catholic University, Taiwan on April 19, 2010 by Professor Bernard Li, President of Fu Jen Catholic University and Fr Louis Gendron S J, Jesuit Provincial. The second one is in Macau and stands at the Ruins of St Paul s, a former Catholic church that is now a UNESCO world heritage site, and was unveiled on August 7, 2010, 428 years to the day that Father Ricci first arrived in Macau and reached Chinese soil. The unveiling was officiated by Chui Sai-on, Chief Executive of Macau SAR. The third and final one is housed in Ricci Hall. All are welcome to visit Father Ricci!
