5 Speaker Biographies The Honourable Mick de Brenni MP Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni was elected as the Member for Springwood in the January 2015 Queensland State Election. Serving as the Chief Government Whip for all of the 2015 Parliamentary sittings, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk chose Mr de Brenni to lead the Housing and Public Works portfolio, and was sworn in as the new Minister on 8 December Mr de Brenni has always taken an active involvement in the local community, well before politics came knocking. Mr de Brenni is passionate about standing up for local service providers and volunteer based organisations, ensuring they get a fair go from government. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Industrial Relations and Human Resources from Griffith University. Claire Parry Strategic Consultant, Hiller Parry Pty Ltd Claire is an internationally-based consultant providing advisory services to government agencies and leading industries. A specialist in skills, employment and industry participation, she works with organisations to develop strategic approaches and delivery outcomes including local employment, workforce development, apprenticeships, workforce diversity and SME capacity. Her clients include government departments, major projects, training providers, not-for-profits and private sector organisations that are seeking to achieve socioeconomic and industry participation objectives through commissioning, procuring or delivering skills, employment and industry capacity programs. Previously Head of Skills and Employment at Crossrail, the largest infrastructure project in Europe, she came to Australia in 2012, to support the development of similar approaches across major projects and local government. Mark Daniels Head of Market and Sector Development, Social Traders Mark plays a key role in social procurement by introducing new markets to the benefits of social enterprise. He also works with social enterprises to build capacity in winning contracts and finding customers. Mark has wide ranging experience in social enterprise across program, advocacy, policy and project development. Prior to joining Social Traders in 2008, he was Social Enterprise Manager for the Brotherhood of St Laurence, managing a number of social enterprises aimed at assisting people into mainstream employment as well as providing expertise to other agencies looking to establish social enterprises. Nathan Williams Project Support Officer, Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy Nathan has a background in journalism and is actively involved in promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture in the far north Queensland region. In his role with DATSIP he works with young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to gain employment through the Youth Employment Program. Luke Terry Executive Director, Toowoomba Clubhouse Luke currently leads the Toowoomba Clubhouse and its associated social enterprise projects which support people living with a mental illness in the Toowoomba region. Luke is currently working on a new $5m commercial laundry and career development centre, as well as a regional School for Social Entrepreneurs Program, designed to increase interest in social entrepreneurship. He is also working with the University of Southern Queensland to write a book on regional development and social enterprise. For his efforts at the Clubhouse and his community Luke was awarded the Social Champion Category of the 2015 Australian Social Enterprise Awards. Vince Aisthorpe Manager Supply Chain, Stanwell Corporation Limited Vince is a highly successful and results driven supply chain practitioner and leader with an extensive strategic and operational leadership background in the defence, energy resource, logistics and local government sectors. He is an innovative and decisive leader with comprehensive skills and a reputation for driving significant procurement and supply chain savings. Vince is President of the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia (Queensland) SCLAA, Chairman of the Queensland Supply Chain & Logistics Conference, Chairman of the Australian Supply Chain & Logistics Awards. Vince holds a Graduate Diploma Logistics Management, Graduate Diploma Management and is a Life Member SCLAA. Paul Bide Chair, School of Social Entrepreneurs Paul is a passionate advocate and capacity builder of Australia s emerging social enterprise sector. He is motivated by wanting to play a part in better harnessing the power and wisdom that exists in the community to identify and solve social problems within 5
6 it, and is particularly interested in business and mission development, developing access to early stage social capital, linking the social sector to business networks, inclusion and economic empowerment. Paul s 27 year career in banking and finance started at the Reserve Bank of Australia in He then moved to Bankers Trust Australia in 1986 for 13 years and ended with a decade at Macquarie Bank where he was an Executive Director and Head of the Debt Markets Division. Paul is a Director of the Trustee of the Newpin Social Benefit Bond, a member of the Youth Justice Board of the WA Department of Corrective Services, a member of the investment committee of SVA s Social Impact Fund, a Director of Challenger Retirement and Investment Services Limited, and, on the Advisory Board of the Australian Office of Financial Management. Amelia Salmon Co-founder and Chair, Queensland Social Enterprise Council Amelia is co-founder of SPIRAL Community Hub and Qld Social Enterprise Council. She has worked in community development practice, particularly community economic development, for over 20 years. Amelia has driven a number of successful social enterprises such as the Big Issue, Mu ooz Restaurant and Just Earth. Amelia is currently transforming the Just Earth social enterprise as CEO. Through her work with QSEC and SPIRAL supporting many social enterprise start ups, Amelia has developed considerable knowledge of the range of social enterprise types and structures, their different needs, attributes, and how this may affect their growth or sustainability. With her grasp on systems advocacy and policy development, she is also a consistent and long-time advocate, growing collaborative partnerships such as QSEC to build a voice for enabling legislative, policy and investment environment for the social enterprise sector. Jessie Williams Program Facilitator, School for Social Entrepreneurs Jessie joined SSE Australia in 2011 and has facilitated multiple learning programs and worked with over 200 budding social entrepreneurs as they developed their ideas. She leads outreach programs across Australia. As a learning entrepreneur, she works across business, nongovernment organisations and social enterprises. She has facilitated action learning sessions with clients such as The Macquarie Group, Atlassian and Office of Environment and Heritage. She has a BA (Government) from Sydney University, a Post Graduate degree in Education and Training, is an accredited coach and works as an Associate with the School for Social Entrepreneurs. She is also the Chair of The GroundSwell Project, a national social enterprise that promotes death literacy. Peter Morichovitis Chief Procurement Officer, Gold Coast City Council Peter commenced as Chief Procurement Officer with Gold Coast City Council, Australia s second largest local government, in July In this role Peter is responsible for developing a strategic procurement function for the Council including ensuring greater effectiveness of Council spend, procurement process efficiency, probity and customer service. Peter s career spans 20 years as a procurement professional in the resources, manufacturing and government sectors. He has specialised in global supply chain, procurement and commercial activities at a range of locations. Peter is the Vice Chair for CIPSA in Queensland and holds post graduate qualifications in marketing as well as undergraduate qualifications in commerce and journalism. Gillian Mailman Managing Director and CEO, Fibre Optics NQ and MJB Solutions Gillian is a proud Bidjara women and trailblazer who sets, rather than follows trends. This started at a young age when Gillian became the first Aboriginal female electrician in Australia. In 2003 Gillian started her own fibre optics company Fibre Optics North Queensland (NQ). Fibre Optics NQ services many clients including local, state and federal governments. In 2013, Gillian established the Joint Venture ICT Connect, a merger between Fibre Optics NQ and MJB Solutions. Richard Warner Coordinator, Nundah Community Enterprises Cooperative Ltd Richard is the coordinator of Nundah Community Enterprises Cooperative Ltd (NCEC) a work co-operative and award winning social enterprise established by people with a disability. Nundah Community Enterprises Co-operative uses a cooperative model of business to create work for their members while delivering satisfaction to their customers. More than 20 people are employed in two businesses: Espresso Train Café & Catering and NCEC Parks & Maintenance. NCEC was finalist in 2013 and 2014 Australian Social Enterprise Awards and winner of best small Social Enterprise in Michael Cherry Founding member, Nundah Community Enterprises Cooperative Ltd Michael is a founding member of the cooperative and has worked in both its parks and cafe divisions. He is also member of the Nundah Co-operators, a group who organise public speaking at events on the behalf of the cooperative. 6
7 Nancy Johns Manager, My Pathway Nancy has a strong passion for working with people to help them improve their business. Her interest in enterprise started at age 6 running a market stall and continued through to attaining a degree in Business and owning a string of successful businesses. Further to this, Nancy has led a number projects in medium and large organisations, including continuous improvement projects. In the last four years, Nancy has developed a keen interest in Social Enterprise and has undertaken university education in Social Entrepreneurship. She is currently leading and supporting the development of 40 Social Enterprises in remote northern Australian communities as well as supporting mainstream businesses to find their voice and become Social Enterprises. Neil Willmett Executive Director, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Strategy Unit, Office of the Director General for the Queensland Government Department of Housing and Public Works Neil provides specialist strategic advice and is responsible for the Department of Housing and Public Works Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander strategy. Prior to this senior executive service level appointment, Neil worked in the private sector in corporate business advisory, responsible for providing business development, strategic planning, project management, risk management, procurement and contract management, and talent management advice to companies in the finance, construction, education, health care, aviation and mining, oil and gas and government sectors (in both Australia and overseas). Kylie Hickling Director Commercialisation & Information Services Department of Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts Kylie is currently focused on designing and delivering a number of programs under the Advance Queensland Business Investment and Attraction initiative. She actively supports and encourages collaboration between research, business/industry and government sectors to improve commercialisation rates and start-up formation. Kylie has also worked in various government roles in education and community services and prior to joining the Queensland Government Kylie worked at Gartner Group Australia. Gabrielle Stewart Field Officer, Many Rivers Gabrielle is passionate about community development and finding small business solutions that provide positive outcomes for disadvantaged people living in regional Australia. Duncan Murray Duncan Murray, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, Cape York Partnership Duncan is a former investment banker and lawyer, but for the majority of his career has been a CEO and COO level operator in the public and private sectors, as well as the private equity and not-for-profit industry. He has occupied senior executive roles for more than a decade. Duncan joined the Cape York Partnership in Stephen Mungomery Executive General Manager, Employment Services (Acting), Endeavour Foundation Stephen s focus is on improving Endeavour Foundation s commercial viability and providing greater employment opportunities for people with a disability. Stephen has a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Arts, a Masters of Entrepreneurship and Commercialisation and a Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment at the Securities Institute of Australia. Prior to joining Endeavour, Stephen held senior roles with KPMG, Rio Tinto, MIM, Ampol and Northline Transport. Harry Venmans Executive Director, Strategic Procurement, Department of Housing and Public Works Harry is responsible for driving a culture of accountability for the end-to-end procurement and strategic sourcing process and programs for Building and Asset Services. Through a diverse team of procurement professionals located across the state, Harry is building procurement capability and leading the development and implementation of strategies within the Building and Construction category that focus on improved supplier relationships that promote regional growth and deliver value for money outcomes for the department s clients. Ren Niemann Partner, McCullough Robertson Ren has provided all levels of government and the private sector with strategic advice on procurement, construction and infrastructure projects for more than 17 years. As part of Ren s experience, he has advised organisations such as Community Services Industry Alliance, Queensland Health and Royal Flying Doctors Service on the tendering, development and procurement of social outcomes and payment by outcomes projects. Ren works with his clients to develop the best integrated approach for tendering and, if successful, transitioning to the delivery of projects. 7
