1 HEART OF AMERICA COUNCIL MARCH 2004 VOLUME 5, ISSUE 1 Gold Bank Sponsors Handbooks for the Urban Scouting Program A generous gift of $10,000 from Gold Bank will underwrite the cost for all Cub Scout and Boy Scout handbooks provided to Scouts in the Urban Scouting program in The Urban Scouting program serves more than 13,800 young people in the urban core of Kansas City. It is critical that Scouts have a handbook to fully participate in the Scouting program. Gold Bank s gift will provide over 2,500 Tiger Cub, Wolf, Bear, Webelos and Boy Scout handbooks. Since its inception in 1988, the Urban Scouting program has served at risk young people who need the Scouting program but may not have the financial resources to participate. We believe in the positive benefit of the Scouting program, said Mick Aslin, President of Gold Bank. By providing handbooks to the Scouts involved in Urban Scouting, we are ensuring that Scouting programs and values are being delivered to youth in our community. Each will include a sticker that states, Gold Bank supports the Scouting program helping young people learn values, selfreliance, thriftiness and citizenship. Many aspects of the Scouting program help young people learn thriftiness and good money management skills including the personal management and entrepreneurship merit badges, Cub Scout electives where Scouts make a family budget, and more. Through the support of Gold Bank, thousands of youths in the urban core of Kansas City will benefit from the Scouting program! For more information on the Urban Scouting program contact Erik Dickinson at (816) or jdickins@bsamail.org.
2 Buzz Shepard receives NFL Community Quarterback Award Buzz Shepard of Troop 90 was recognized by the Kansas City Chiefs with the NFL Community Quarterback Award on December 11, This program recognizes volunteers who have made a significant impact to the community through their work in a local non-profit. He was chosen from among hundreds of applicants to receive the award. Janet Feltham, Director of Community Relations for the Kansas City Chiefs said one thing that was evident was Buzz s complete dedication to special needs youths of the Scouting program. Thanks to Buzz Shepard, countless Scouts with special needs ranging from Downs Syndrome to severe autism have enjoyed the fun and excitement of Scouting. Troop 90 began in 1985 and Buzz has been involved since 1991, joining with his son, Josh who has ADD and mild mental retardation. Buzz served as Scoutmaster from 1994 to 2000 and today serves as Troop Committee Chairman. Buzz s philosophy about how Scouting serves boys with special needs is simple. We always underestimate our own children. There is very little that they can t do if we ask them and plan properly. Buzz continued, One of the most challenging experiences I ve had is convincing parents that their Scout is not breakable. We create a safe environment where boys grow and achieve. This is especially important because these boys have usually heard about what they can t do. During his involvement with Troop 90, Buzz has given more than 7,400 hours of unpaid volunteer service. The experience has changed him profoundly saying, this is the most rewarding thing I ve done in my life, but it s also been the most fun. Buzz has helped his Scouts understand their potential and their unique abilities. At a meeting he once asked, Who here is handicapped? No one responded. This prompted a change in the Troop patch from the logo of a Scout in a wheelchair to a Troop 90 totem pole, which all the Buzz with his wife Nancy and son Joshua at the Chiefs award ceremony Scouts participated in designing and carving. With these Scouts, I ve learned that your measure of success changes. We measure success in inches instead of feet. The more success we can build with these young men, the more confident and able they become, Shepard said. When asked what has surprised him the most about his experiences with Troop 90, Buzz replied Every meeting, every encounter has surprised me. I ve seen miracles happen. The thing I ve heard most often from parents is I didn t know my son could do that. Buzz with Scouts and leaders of Troop 90. The Troop totem pole is in the background 2

Currently, more than 13,800 young men and women in the urban core are positively impacted by Scouting s values through the Urban Scouting program. All proceeds from the DCAD will support the Urban Scouting program. Bill Tempel, Executive Board member and Landon Rowland, Chairman Emeritus of Janus Capital will Co-Chair the event. Marketing Audit Results Charlie Tetrick, Vice President of Marketing On December 12, Charlie Tetrick, President of Walz Tetrick Advertising and Vice President of Marketing for the Council, led 31 staff and volunteers in a Council marketing audit. This effort identified specific strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for the Council to determine the best marketing plan for the future. This is an exercise that we utilize with our clients and it provides an opportunity to step back and look at the whole picture. By identifying these critical areas, a marketing plan can be created to address the critical areas facing an organization Tetrick said. The areas identified include camping as a strength and success story that can be leveraged to an even greater degree. Weaknesses include retention of Scouts and communication with parents, leaders and other stakeholders. An opportunity that will be an area of focus is to increase our presence in the Hispanic community for better recruitment and to increase the overall awareness of Scouting. The biggest threat facing the Council is possible decreased school access directly impacting the Council s ability to recruit Cub Scouts. The marketing audit results will become the focus for many facets of the Council s operation in 2004 and beyond. Watch for additional information and updates in future Profiles of Scouting issues. 3 THREAT Decreasing School Access OPPORTUNITY Increasing Hispanic Population WEAKNESS Retention Communication STRENGTH Camping Program For more information on the Council s Marketing efforts, contact Mike Johnson, Director of Finance and Marketing at (816) ext. 179 or mijohnso@bsamail.org.
