Chapter 18
Chapter 18: Lobster On Food Stamps Marcia P. Coggs human Services center: 170,000 ft sq. 232 windows. 450 County employees (215). Larraine applies to get food stamps reinstated (number 4023) (216). Can t call to set up appointment but misses it due to eviction. Gets two bags of canned food from food pantry. To Larraine, putting something on layaway was saving. Due to SSI benefits, she couldn t have more than $1,000 in her bank account, so she spends her money as to not get her benefits cut. She sees layaway as a way to save money similar to a bank.
Larraine On Food Stamps, SSI, and lives in the trailer park under new managment. Spends all her monthly food stamp money on Crab legs and Lobster tails. I m satisfied with what I had, she said. And I m willing to eat noodles for the rest of the month because of it. (219) If Larraine spent her money unwisely, it was not because her benefits left her with so much, but because they left her with so little. She had to eat pantry food for the rest of the month. Some days, she simply sent hungry (219). Gets evicted as soon as winter comes around with all her warm clothes in bonded storage; lives with Brother Beaker.
Other Characters This chapter is mainly focused around Larraine but includes some other minor characters. Niece, Sammy: Gives insight into Larraine Pastor, Daryl: Gives insight into Larraine Beaker, Brother: Lives with Larraine until he moves to old folks public housing Ms. Betty: Old lady who lived across the road, Roommate.
Chapter 19
Chapter 19 Characters Pam Has 4 kids but only is taking care of her youngest daughter who is 2 years old. She was also 9 months pregnant at the time she was evicted. Ned In a relationship with Pam. Was working as a construction worker but he lost his job and soon afterward, got evicted. Travis A friend of Pam and Ned s. He let them stay with him for a while even though he was sceptical because the last time he let people stay with him, they got him evicted. Arleen Single mother of 2. Applied or called for more than 89 apartments after she and her kids were evicted. Had a hard time finding a place to stay because she had kids.
Chapter 19 In this chapter a lady named Pam, who is pregnant and only taking care of her youngest daughter gets evicted out of her home and has to stay at a motel that charges $50 a night. Her husband Ned got fired from his job after missing two days of work after being evicted because he had to help his family move out from the trailer park. Pam spent long hours of the the day calling different landlords but almost everytime getting told that they don't allow children. Finally they found a place but 3 days later they got kicked out because Ned got in fight with the upstair neighbors. After that ned applied to a nice two bedroom apartment but he only applied for himself not for pam and their two kids.
Chapter 20
Chapter 20: Nobody Wants the North Side Crystal had been evicted for unauthorized subletting to an evicted tenant (243). She stayed at the Lodge and soon met Vanetta, the single mother of three children. Vanetta used to have a job, but she became unable to pay bills and rent, and fearful for her children, she helped rob two women. After a court hearing, she was fired and evicted.
Chapter 20 Crystal and Vanetta look for a home together. They are rejected for these reasons: They were both evicted within the past 3 years, Vanetta s felony, and The fact that neither have any income. The two only began looking at homes in the inner city after they had applied for more than fifty apartments. At the end of the chapter, Crystal is forced to leave the Lodge.
Reflection Write a reflection (½ page) from the point of view of either Crystal, Arleen, or Pam about their struggles to find a place to live and how hard it has been to move around as much as they have. Have they faced any type of discrimination because of their living/working status? Has it been hard to find jobs? Would you say there is a cycle that low income/homeless families face? Explain.
