3 Committee For Economic Development The Committee for Economic Development (CED) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, business-led, public policy organization that delivers wellresearched analysis and reasoned solutions to our nation s most critical issues. We are proud to highlight CED s strong legacy of engaging leaders in public policy and look forward to recognizing the many companies and individuals who have been part of that legacy. Since its inception in 1942, CED has addressed national priorities that promote sustained economic growth and development to benefit all Americans. These activities have helped shape the future on issues ranging from the Marshall Plan in the late 1940s, to education reform in the past three decades, and campaign finance reform since CED s research findings are coupled with multi-pronged outreach efforts throughout the country and abroad, achieving tangible impact at the local, state, and national levels. Our nation needs renewed business leadership to reach the goals that we all share including robust economic growth, increased educational and job opportunities, and rapid productivity. We need civil dialogue to address these challenges, and we need great statesmen and women to support, influence, and lead the discussions. The Distinguished Performance Awards honor business leaders who have answered CED s call for leadership. In 2013, we are pleased to once again recognize an outstanding group of companies and individuals. We look forward to including you in CED s Distinguished Performance Awards Dinner. 4 Peter G. Peterson Award for Business Statesmanship Howard Schultz chairman, president and chief executive officer Starbucks CED is proud to honor Howard Schultz, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Starbucks Coffee Company, with the 2013 Peter G. Peterson Business Statesmanship Award for his strong support of environmental stewardship, investing in people and communities, and creating a strong culture in which purpose and profit goes hand-in-hand. The Business Statesmanship Award was established in honor of Peter G. Peterson, and it recognizes corporate executives who champion issues in the interest of the public good, above their company or personal interests, and who meet the highest standards of ethics and integrity. Howard s vision for Starbucks began in 1982 as director of operations and marketing when Starbucks had just four stores. After visiting Italy in 1983, Howard left Starbucks to start his own coffee company called Il Giornale. In August 1987 he purchased Starbucks with the help of local investors, and today the company has nearly 19,000 global coffee shops. As part of his legacy in building the Starbucks brand and company, Howard created two landmark employee benefit programs, including comprehensive health coverage for part-time employees and equity in the company in the form of stock options. Howard has also been supportive of CED s policy programs to fix political dysfunction in Washington, and finding reasoned solutions to the federal budget deficit. CED commends Howard Schultz for his dedicated leadership as a true Business Statesman as we present him with the 2013 Business Statesmanship Award.

5 Owen B. Butler Education Excellence Award Edward B. Rust, Jr. Chairman and CEO State Farm Insurance Companies CED is pleased to present Ed Rust, Jr., Chairman and CEO of State Farm Insurance Companies, with the inaugural Owen B. Butler Education Excellence Award. This Award was established in 2013 in honor of Brad Butler, former Chairman and CEO of Procter & Gamble and recognizes an individual s exceptional commitment to quality education, skills development, and workforce development programs. State Farm is nationally recognized as a leader of public-private partnerships to improve the quality of education in the United States. Ed s own personal dedication to promoting educational excellence and workforce development has made a real difference in advancing the national education reform movement, as well as within State Farm s industry and in the states where they operate. Among his many other distinct education leadership honors, Ed serves on the boards of America s Promise Alliance and the James B. Hunt, Jr., Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy, is former chairman of the Business-Higher Education Forum and Business Roundtable s Education Initiative, and has served on the National (Glenn) Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century and on the No Child Left Behind Commission. He served as a founding board member for Achieve and still serves on several education groups within his home state of Illinois. We are proud to count Ed as a long-standing Trustee of CED s Board and former Chair of our Education Policy Subcommittee. With Ed s leadership and engagement of his colleagues at State Farm, CED has led ground-breaking studies on K-12 standards and assessments, teacher quality, and improving innovation and performance of post-secondary education institutions. Ed Rust s contributions to CED s policy work have been stellar and we are proud to present him with this inaugural Owen B. Butler Education Excellence Award.

6 Distinguished Performance Award for Corporate Citizenship Kendall J. Powell Chairman and CEO General Mills CED is pleased to recognize General Mills, under the leadership of Ken Powell, for its long-standing dedication to strengthening communities by fostering public-private partnerships; helping children lead healthy, active lifestyles; working to end hunger; and improving nutrition. The 2013 Corporate Citizenship Award is presented annually to a company that demonstrates a strong commitment to corporate responsibility practices, and whose leaders are actively engaged in supporting and expanding those efforts. The award highlights companies that integrate relevant societal concerns into their core operating strategies, embracing them as beneficial for businesses, customers, employees and their communities. CED is proud to recognize the exceptional leadership Ken provides to General Mills corporate social responsibility programs. Ken joined General Mills in 1979 and was named president of General Mills Big G cereal division in In his impressive 34-year career, he was elected president and COO in 2006, named CEO in 2007, and appointed chairman in CED applauds the strong commitment General Mills has made to address the challenges facing its operating communities tied to nutrition, education and the environment. The company also has made extensive efforts to foster the career growth of women, support equality in the workplace and create a multicultural workforce that reflects the demographics of its customers. This work aligns naturally with CED s efforts to place more qualified women on corporate boards. CED is pleased to present Ken Powell and General Mills with the 2013 Corporate Citizenship Award.

7 Distinguished Performance Award for Leadership in Diversity Daniel F. Akerson Chairman and CEO General Motors Company CED is proud to recognize Dan Akerson as the recipient of its 2013 Leadership in Diversity Award for his support and encouragement of women within General Motors. This award was recently established to honor exceptional companies and individuals who are leading programs that foster workplace diversity and champion underrepresented groups, including supporting women and their advancement across the full spectrum of private enterprise. Dan s commitment to addressing the challenges women face rising through the ranks, dedication to diversity, and recognition of the strong impact women leaders have on global competitiveness, particularly through corporate Boards, is truly remarkable. CED is inspired by Dan and is pleased to provide this well-deserving recognition. At General Motors, Dan is deeply committed to improving the quality of life in communities across the U.S. through philanthropic efforts focused mainly in the areas of education, health and human services, community development, and the environment. With a special emphasis on educating tomorrow s leaders and innovators, the General Motors Foundation alone over the last year has provided an estimated $20 million to fund education initiatives, including the national Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, which places a special emphasis on helping women and minorities receive a quality secondary education focused on science, technology, engineering and math. The Award aligns with CED s ongoing project addressing women s economic empowerment. The work CED is leading on diversity, women on corporate boards, and boosting competitiveness presents an opportunity to highlight leadership in these fields. Dan has been a proud supporter of this work and formally endorsed CED s recommendations for advancing women on corporate boards. CED is proud to count General Motors as a long-standing partner and to honor Dan Akerson tonight with our 2013 Leadership in Diversity Award.

8 Distinguished Performance Award for Excellence in Public Policy Kenneth C. Frazier Chairman of the Board, President and CEO Merck & Co., Inc. CED is proud to honor Ken Frazier and Merck & Co., Inc. as the highlydeserving recipients of the 2013 Excellence in Public Policy Award for their strong commitment to educational excellence, campaign finance reform, and policies that champion fiscal health and responsibility. The Excellence in Public Policy Award honors individuals and their companies in the private or public sector who are dedicated to public policy in the nation s best long-term interests. The award recognizes leaders who advocate policies that address society s key concerns, including long-term economic growth, educational excellence, environmental sustainability, good corporate governance, and competitiveness. Ken s inspiring leadership is best showcased in three distinct policy areas: education, fiscal health, and political disclosure. Ken has worked to strengthen accountability practice around political disclosure, and encouraged other business leaders to step up and address the budget deficit. This award encourages current and next generation corporate executives to follow the examples of its honorees, and take a more active role in policy deliberations. In addition to serving as Chairman of the Board, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Merck & Co., Inc., Ken is also a Director of Exxon Mobil and PhRMA, a Member of the Board of Overseers, Weill Cornell Medical College and Graduate School of Medical Sciences, and a Trustee of The Pennsylvania State University and Cornerstone Christian Academy. 9 Distinguished Performance Award for Trustee Leadership Joseph E. Kasputys Chairman, China Monitor, Inc. Founder, IHS Global Insight CED is proud to present Dr. Joseph Kasputys with the 2013 Trustee Leadership Award, which recognizes an individual s exceptional service on our Board of Trustees and the special contributions made to CED s policy research, outreach programs, and overall governance. Joe has served CED for nearly three decades and was Co-Chair of the Board from 2006 to His many years of dedication to CED have advanced several key programs, including our Fiscal Health and Global Financial Imbalances Subcommittees, both of which he co-chaired. Joe has also provided strong guidance and governance through our Membership & Nominating, Strategic Planning, and Executive Committees. Joe brings extensive experience and expertise from several major public corporations until, in 2001, he founded Global Insight (now IHS Global Insight), a premier economic and financial analysis forecasting firm. With noted economist Dr. Allen Sinai, he also founded Decision Economics. In addition, from 1972 to 1977, Joe served in the US Department of Commerce, rising to the position of Assistant Secretary. He was Deputy Director of the White House task force formed to deal with the Arab oil embargo in 1973, and participated in the forming of the US Department of Energy. He has been an integral part of CED s strategic thinking and an exemplary ambassador of CED s work to elected officials and the business community. His extensive experience in economic information, analysis and forecasting has contributed to many aspects of CED s core programs over the years CED is pleased to count Joe Kasputys as a good friend and leader of the organization, and we are very proud to present him with our Trustee Leadership Award in 2013.
