He has played the guitar for 40 years and enjoys playing a wide range of traditional, folk and contemporary songs and tunes. He has run a number of successful guitar courses where the emphasis has been on learners selecting the music that they want to play. His courses are characterised by a friendly approach, moving steadily from simple to complex and an ability to tailor course content to group progression coupled with individual coaching. This course aims to help learners to: Have fun Expand their understanding of chord formation and chord Increase their personal repertoire of chords and songs/tunes Transpose published chord into chord that are more suitable to their playing ability and pitch of their voice. Develop more complex strumming patterns Learn some flat picking methods Learn some finger picking methods Learn about and be able to play basic blues/calypso s etc Develop a personal play-list of songs/tunes of their choice NB* The course will not cover jazz guitar, flamenco guitar, classical guitar styles
2 The course is for: People who have previous experience of playing the guitar and can play basic chords confidently People who may have found their learning/playing has reached a plateau phase and want to progress to a new level People who want to experiment with new and different techniques (e.g flat picking, finger picking etc) People who want to experiment with different musical styles (e.g. traditional folk, contemporary folk, blues etc) People who want to experiment with getting differing sounds from their instrument (e.g using pick-ups and amplifiers) People who want to experiment with playing the guitar and mouth organ simultaneously. Attending this course would be a natural progression for people who have recently attended the recent 10 week Rossett Adult Learning Beginners and Beginners Plus Guitar Courses For the first session students will need An accoustic 6 string guitar Plectrums A Capo This course is not suitable for electric guitars Additional Costs There are some low cost accessories (plectrums, strap, guitar case etc) that learners may wish to acquire. Some music and song sheets will be provided. Depending upon individual choice some learners may wish to buy additional accessories and/or equipment/books to pursue their particular interests. By the end of the course students should be able to: Demonstrate an increased repertoire of chords and chord Demonstrate differing techniques (eg flat picking, finger picking etc) Demonstrate differing musical styles (eg. traditional folk, contemporary folk, blues etc) Get a broader range of sounds from their instrument (eg using pick-ups and amplifiers) Transpose unsuitable chord into those which are more suitable to the pitch of their voice. Combine playing the guitar and simultaneously playing the mouth organ. Prepare a more comprehensive personal play list Play songs/tunes from their playlist with confidence

Group learning needs and Group learning plan development of some generic goals that will underpin the learning throughout the term Personal learning needs and Personal learning plans assessing what people want to learn individually and how this can be done. Chord sequence progressions (playing in differing keys) Practice for week 1 Linking chord to lyrics of popular songs Strengthening the left hand (independence exercises) to manage challenging chord patterns Strumming patterns making the instrument do the work Introduction to the scope of songs/tunes that can be played through a more advanced repertoire of chords Accessories : Using the Capo to increase scope of voice pitch etc. Compiling individual playlists personal choices which present suitable learning goals Practice for week 2 Flat picking exploiting the potential of using a plectrum Simple Flat Picking techniques Using the plectrum to generate differing effects; introductions, middle sections, song endings etc Linking and transferring the learning to traditional and contemporary songs Supplementing learning from the internet Practice for week 3 Introduction to the blues Chords in the key of E - E major, E7, A major, B7) 12 bar blues chords Further finger independence exercises and technique reminders. Playing with others with a partner or in a group Practice for week 4 Introduction to finger picking techniques. Simple Finger Picking techniques. Linking and transferring the learning to traditional and contemporary songs

Consolidation of learning Progress Review mid-term reassessment of learning and application. Adjustment to personal learning plans, goals and play lists. Practice for week 6 Selection of group work songs for final session and practice of these in groups Selection of individual songs for final session and practice/playing to others Recap on flat picking and finger picking Practice for week 7 Learning further chords and where they fit in differing Learning how to transpose chord from published music books and sheets into simpler, more applicable chord patterns. Practice for week 8 Further development of the blues Revisiting the 12 bar blues chords Introductions and endings to blues songs and Consolidation of techniques: Where bar chords fit in playing the blues Where flat picking can be used in playing the blues Bottle neck blues Practice for week 9 Learning further chords and where they fit in differing Practising group and individual playlist songs Student s prior learning This is not a course for beginners. This Guitar Improvers course is intended for people who have recent experience of playing basic guitar chords and are able to link this to playing songs/tunes Students intending to enrol on this course should Have a good knowledge of basic chords and an ability to play them, (eg Gmaj,Cmaj, Dmaj, Am, Em, G7) Be able to make changes between chords
5 Have a basic strumming ability Progress and learning outcomes Progress and learning outcomes will be measured through weekly performance of songs/tunes learned the previous week, within small groups and sometimes the whole group As this is the Autumn Term, in addition to the general songs which people we will cover a number of Christmas songs; traditional carols, contemporary Christmas songs and tunes.
