2 MAINTENANCE AND FINE TUNING Horizontal Pulling Bar The Horizontal Pulling Bar has a break-in period and should be readjusted after the bow press seats itself. Only a few uses should seat the bow press. 1. Adjustments are made by the two vertical adjusting screws found under the center of the pulling bar, on either side of the jack. First loosen the lock nuts, on both screws; then eye the Horizontal Pulling Bar level, while alternately loosening one screw and tightening the other, a little more than finger tight. Do not over tighten. When level, snug both lock nuts back in place. 2. The Pulling Bar is attached to the Jack with a 5/8 x3 ½ jack bolt, and should be adjusted by tightening the bolt until the thin bearing washers between the jack and bar clip become tight, then backing off the bolt slightly so the bearing washers can just be moved. A knife or a thin tool can be used to check washer tension. Note: This procedure should take most of the play out of the horizontal pulling bar. 3. The Pulling Bar should be centered between both Drop Arms. To adjust, loosen the (2) jack base plate bolts, hold the jack to one side or the other and re-tighten bolts. If more adjustment is needed, you can use a thin plastic shim under one side of the jack base plate. Plastic shipping tape, folded to the desired size, makes a good shim. Adjusting the Stand 1. Lay bow press on its back. 2. Loosen the Securing Knobs. 3. Remove the Adjustment Clevis Pins. 4. Pull legs out to desired hole. 5. Replace Clevis Pins and snug Securing Knobs. Jack CAUTION POWERFUL, HEAVY DUTY JACK. Know the limits of your jack. 1. Immediately stop cranking when the jack comes to a stop in either the extended or retracted position or damage to internal components may occur. 2. Care should be taken not to expose jack to moisture. Although parts are plated, internal components can rust. 3. Grease bevel gears periodically, located at the crank assembly, with premium axel grease. A pencil or other thin tool can be used to reach the gears. 4. Disassembly of the jack will void warranty. 2

3 MAINTENANCE AND FINE TUNING CONT D ADX Adapters The (2) fork slide pins on each adapter, on which the center fork slides, should be oiled periodically with a thin lubricating oil. A drop of oil may also be needed on the adjusting screws. ADX Protector Sleeves To replace the protector sleeves, cut-off the old sleeves and clean off any remaining residue. Apply Fletching Cement to the inside of the new Protector Sleeve on the convex side only (a Q-Tip works). Also apply cement to the cut-out notch on the end of the metal fork. Push the sleeve on fully; repeat on each fork. If done correctly, you shouldn t need to clean off any adhesive. Pulling Straps Replace when worn. Stand Adjust leveling bolts as needed. Cleaning Use a mild soap with warm water. Do not use solvents. Keep Dry This product is meant to be used indoors. 3

5 RULES TO REMEMBER 1. Telescoping Rollers and Adapters should always be set at equal hole locations. Uneven adjustment will stress the bow press and put uneven pressure on the bow. 2. Keeping the telescoping Rollers and Adapters in the fully retracted position will dramatically increase the life of the bow press and its components due to lever arm forces. In most applications, you will find that extending the telescoping adapters is unnecessary. 3. When pressing a bow, press the limbs at equal locations. Do not judge distance from the bow s cams, as cams may be different sizes. A good rule is to keep the bow string parallel with the Pulling Bar. This will be a close location for pressing limbs equally. 4. Do not over tighten Pulling Straps, just take up the slack. Over tightening straps will cause creeping of the bow s cams toward the rollers (adapters). 5. Never use the Pulling Straps when pressing using Limb-Tip. 6. Remove any vibration dampening screws on a bow s limbs that may tear Adapter Protector Sleeves. 7. Back down limb poundage prior to pressing a bow. Manufacturers usually suggest (4) full turns on limb bolts. 8. It s a good practice when pressing or un-pressing a bow to watch both of the bow s cams. Look for clearance, string jump, limb travel, etc. 9. Immediately stop cranking when the jack comes to a stop in either the extended or retracted position or damage to internal components may occur. 10. Always follow manufacturer s specifications to press a given bow. 11. Safety glasses are recommended while using bow press. 5

6 Detail #2 PRESSING A BOW Back down limb poundage prior to pressing a bow. Manufacturers usually suggest (4) full turns on limb bolts. When pressing a bow using rollers, position the roller with about a ½ gap between the bow s largest cam and the top of the roller. The bow s smaller cam doesn t matter. Remember to keep the bow string parallel with the Pulling Bar. Never press on a bow s cams, or damage to the bow may occur. Parallel Limb bows may need more gap under the cams and less pressure on the Pulling Straps. Note: Rollers do not work with all bows. Always follow manufacturer s specifications to press a given bow. 6

7 PRESSING A BOW CONT D When using Pulling Straps, position them over or through the ends of the bow s riser, near the limb pockets, and bring up the slack. Hard strapping will result in limb creep toward the cams. Watch for cam clearance, and if contact occurs with the cam and roller, stop pressing the bow, un-press, and adjust the press so there is more gap under the cam. We recommend strapping over a riser and not over a limb, but always follow the bow manufacturer s specifications to press a given bow. The Pulling Straps are designed to have the cam buckle release button facing forward while the hook on the strap should be placed in the space between the rear dowel bar and the horizontal pulling bar, with the hook facing away. This setup allows you to drop the hook after placing it through the gap, keeping your hands free to adjust the straps and allowing the hook to travel up and grab the bar. Turn jack crank clockwise and stop when bow string just becomes slack. 7

Limb-Tip (Detail D) is where the tips of a bow s limbs are placed into the cut notches on the ends of the forks. Limb-end (Detail E) is where the bow s cam is placed between the forks. WHEN PRESSING WITH LIMB-TIP Remove any vibration dampening screws on a bow s limbs that may tear Adapter Protector Sleeves. Limb-Tip is mainly used when pressing crossbows and short-limbed bows. When pressing a crossbow with a narrow traditional limb, first try pressing with rollers and straps. Traditional limbs 8

9 are normally longer. If pressing these limbs with limb-tip, use only (1) fork on each adapter, adjusted to the center of the slide. Do not use pulling straps when pressing with limb-tip. Start with adjusting the telescopic slides being fully retracted (Detail D) and position the slide to the optimal position (Detail A). This position is best for lever arm forces. Keep adapters in these locations whenever possible. Extending the adapters (Detail C) up and out increases the lever arm forces and is harder on the bow press. Position adapters to desired location, with set pins installed. Adjust the width of the forks by holding the bow up to them, turn the fork adjustment knob until the forks are centered on quad limb bows or are close to the cam on single limb bows. With one hand, insert one side of the bow into the notches of the adapter and apply pressure to hold in place. Turn the jack crank with your free hand until the other fork makes contact with the bow limb. Make sure the bow is seated into the forks by pulling up on the bow. Turn jack crank until the bow string goes slack. When un-pressing a bow, hold the bow with one hand and turn the jack crank counter-clockwise until bow is released. WHEN PRESSING WITH LIMB-END Limb-End is mainly used on parallel limb bows with hardware installed near the limb tips. Position the bow s cams between the forks (Detail E). Turn the jack crank to adjust the press and leave approximately 3/8 gap between the bottom of the cam and the fork slide pin. Turn the fork adjustment knob until the forks are centered on quad limb bows or are close to the cam on single limb bows. Strap the bow near the end of the riser and take up the slack. Turn the jack crank until the bow string goes slack. When fully un-pressing a bow with bow string removed, watch for limb creep off the forks. If creeping occurs, stop, re-press and re-set forks. If creeping off forks still occurs, do not use limbend for that bow. 9

10 QUICK REFERENCE PRESSING Back down limb poundage prior to pressing a bow. Manufacturers usually suggest (4) full turns on limb bolts. Position the bow on the press so the bow string is level. Adjust the press allowing about ½ gap between the larger cam and the roller. Place pulling straps on each side of the bow, equally near the ends of the riser and take up the slack. (does not apply to limb-tip) Turn jack crank clockwise and stop when bow string just becomes slack. UN-PRESSING Check both cams and make sure strings and hardware are seated in proper locations. Turn jack crank counter-clockwise and stop when bow string is taunt. Check cams again for string and hardware alignment. Turn jack crank counter-clockwise until pulling straps become loose. Press the cam buckle release button to release the pulling strap. Caution: You should only push the cam buckle release button when straps are loose. 10
