1 LEAD FOR THE GUTAR (MPROVSNG) Prep Section by ARTHUR BAYAS Primary, ntermediate, & Advanced Section by DON COMANDA Lead (mprovising) is the spontaneos creation of a rhythmic, melodic line to a grop of given chords (a progression) sally taken from a known song or one form or another of a bles progression. t is a way of conveying yor feelings to yor adience (speaking) throgh yor instrment (a way of expressing yorself). mprovising, or lead, as it is referred to by a great many of or yong msicians of today, can be taght only to a certain degree. For the most part it depends on the talent and creative ability of the individal, once sfficient knowledge regarding it is accmlated. The stdent, however, mst have something on which to base his mprovising, the fondation or grondwork on which to bild. The first step in this grondwork is a rn. A rn is a grop of notes which blend with a particlar chord or chords. Each of the rns sed will have a nmber. This is so that they may be identified in the pages following. All rns mst be memorized thoroghly so that they may be played in any position of the fingerboard. Read and practice each page thoroghly. The lead is laid ot step by step and each step shold be completed before going on to the next. With practice and persistence yo will, in a srprisingly short amont of time, begin to get a real, good, melodic (professional) sond in yor lead. (This progressive way of teaching lead gitar has been tried and tested with tremendos sccess for over eight years. t is the most direct approach to lead gitar as it is today.) May take this opportnity to wish yo great sccess in yor lead and all other phases of yor gitar playing. (f possible have someone play the chords as yo play yor lead. A tape recorder is also good. Record the chord progression several times, then play it back and begin yor lead to the chords.)
