1 ECFHS Honors English II 2018 Summer Reading Assignment Honors English 2 will require you to read and analyze a variety of texts across genres while relating them to the larger picture of English literary tradition. In order for students to begin the school year prepared make these literary connections, all Honors English 2 students are required to complete the following summer work which will create a basic foundation from which to begin building content and skills necessary for success in the course. Please be aware that this assignment must be completed by the first day of school! You will be given a project on the reading the first week of school followed by a test to ensure mastery of the concepts introduced by the work. Completion of this assignment is a requirement for participating in Honors English 2. #1. Read Thomas C. Foster s book How to Read Literature Like a Professor. Foster, a professor of English at the University of Michigan, has written this book to help students handle the basics of studying literature. You will find his book both entertaining and insightful. Additionally, we will reference the book regularly throughout the year using several of Foster s methods to help inform our own interpretations and discussion. Be sure you get the right book! Foster has another book, How to Read Novels Like a Professor this is NOT our book. You will find this book at most local bookstores (new and used), online, school and public libraries. We suggest getting your own copy of this book as it will come in handy for both this course and AP Literature; but it is not required. * Foster references many works of literature with which you will probably be unfamiliar. You do not need to read every word of every chapter focus on the bolded points of each chapter and make note of any of the books Foster references that you would like to read in the future! #2. Take notes for each chapter on the provided chart ( except : Introduction, Interludes, Sonnet, and the Test Case). Chapter one has been done for you as a model. Chapter Gist: main idea(s). This should be no longer than 3 sentences. 1 A quest or hero s journey consists of five things: a quester, place to go, stated reason to go there, challenges and trials, and real reason to go there (self-knowledge) Connection to another source & explanation (play, film, novel, poem) NOT referenced in Foster s book Harry Potter : Harry, an eleven year old orphan leaves the Dursleys to attend Hogwarts and learn magic. Throughout his years he faces trials, villains, tests, school, and his ultimate nemesis, Lord Voldemort. In the end, he learns the truth about himself and his past. #3. Read books! Read two or more novel(s) of your choosing and keep a log of what you read. Honors students should make a habit of reading and challenge themselves to read more challenging texts. Type two paragraphs in connection to HTRLLP based on ONE of your summer novels - save to your Google Docs account. You will submit this to turnitin.com the first week of school. This class will largely be centered on applying concepts and skills to literature selected by students. This summer, pick one novel that you read this summer and apply 2-3 concepts from Foster s book. Write up a paragraph explaining your findings using evidence from your novel to connect to chapters in HTRLLP. Attach this paragraph to the end of your How to Read Lit. notes. A list of titles that have been enjoyed by students in past years are on the back of this sheet, but do not feel confined to this list if there is something else that you find interesting and would like to read.

7 2018 Summer Reading Log Log the books you read over summer. Two are the minimum and these are to be books you have never read before. Find books that are interesting and appropriate for your level.
