2 Congratulations! You are taking part in a murder mystery by Red Herring Games. A few simple instructions to help you along: Firstly: Don t Panic! This booklet contains all the information you need as a guest to help you act your part throughout the murder mystery party. The first page provides you with additional background information to help you get into character, however there are no special acting abilities required and you can make as much or as little of your character as you wish. After that on each page you are given either something to read out (dialogue), questions to ask, or information to help you answer questions you will be asked. These questions and answers are not intended to be read out word for word. Instead read them, digest the information and then ask and answer any questions in your own words. You are encouraged to ad lib, but it is very important you do not lie, so please provide the information contained within your booklet when asked. Your host for the evening will direct you where necessary and tell you when to move on to the next round when the time is right. If you are the murderer you will not be told. When you finally come to guess who did it it could easily be you and feel free to point the finger at yourself if you feel you must! And lastly: Have fun! Al Cologne Background Character Information: Keep this information to yourself, and use it to help you to act in character throughout the mystery: You carry a violin case with you at all times. Inside it is your machine gun! You run the notorious Chicago Outfit - a dangerous gang of mobsters and bootleggers. To maintain your role as a respectable businessman, you own a perfume factory. This, however, is merely a front that is being used as a cover for your bootlegging enterprise. You are carrying a perfume bottle marked Cologne. It is full of hooch! Take a swig when your wife, May, isn t looking. You re a bit scared of her! 1 1 2

3 Al Cologne Scripted Dialogue Round 1 Introductions: That jackass had been taking my business! Use the following dialogue to introduce yourself to the other guests, speaking when indicated below. Al Cologne speaks first using the following dialogue: Well, that s swell! Meringue s dead! He was a palooka! A dumb bum! No wonder somebody shot him! And I really don t think I need ta introduce myself to anyone! All of Chicago knows the name of Al Cologne! I m a manufacturer and purveyor of fine perfume. Oh, and a fearsome mobster to boot! Nobody messes with me! Say, has anyone called the meat wagon yet? I don t want that punk on my premises any longer than necessary. He s giving me the creeps! After you have heard from everyone, please continue reading and begin round 1. What? Was Meringue selling perfume? Nay, you dummy! Moonshine! You sell liquor? Bottles Cologne: Don t tell me you didn t know? Everyone on Northside knew! Sugar Meringue: I can t believe you think the Rexington s a teashop! Al told me it served lemonade! Sugar Meringue: And you believed him? Well, I think that s that. Al has as much as admitted he killed Meringue so what are we waitin for? Whoa! He only said he was a jackass. He didn t say he killed him. He near as damn did! Look, you re a jackass and I haven t killed you... not yet! This is getting us nowhere! Cont. 3 4

4 Bottles Cologne: What was Meringue doing at the Rexington? He must ve known this place would be crawling with the Chicago Outfit. You can t walk the block without bumping into one of Al s crew. He must ve had protection. You don t come here without a bodyguard carrying a beanshooter. Sugar Meringue: So who was covering his back? Whoever it was shouldn t have bothered. They did a lousy job. The man s a pincushion! Come on, own up! Who s the sap who goofed? Bottles Cologne: Yeah, who s the outsider here? Or should I say Northsider? Al Cologne - First Round Questions you should ask: Ask Bottles why he s not bottling perfume at the factory tonight. Ask Mrs Roody whether she saw Meringue this evening. Information you should reveal about yourself only when asked. Meringue was muscling in on your business ventures so you are pleased that he is dead. He had set up a rival speakeasy on Northside and your profits were down. You were not at the Rexington all evening. You went out at about 7pm for your violin lesson. Do not read further until instructed by your host. God give me strength, I need a drink! And I dinna mean coffee! 5 6

5 Scripted Dialogue Round 2 Och, you re looking mighty fine tonigh, Mrs R! Yeah, sure are! But what was Meringue doing at yours? Och aye! And who are you trying to kid? We ve all slept there! You re a bunch of real trouble boys, aren t you! Every last one of you! Don t say it too loud! Mind yer own business! Bottles Cologne: I don t suppose he was paying rent. You re right there, laddie! He always was a sucker for a good looker! And boy, Mrs Roody is one swell hooker! Er, I mean looker! Sugar Meringue: Jeez, he wouldn t even have glanced at the likes of her! Yer ve got ta be kiddin! He d chase any skirt! You re treading on thin ice, mister! Sugar Meringue: He was probably looking for a flophouse to lay low in. He was always mighty protective of me and kept any trouble away from our door. My house is not a flophouse! It s a genteel establishment. Bottles Cologne: I shouldn t worry. The gumshoe ain t gonna solve this one. It s a mystery to me how anyone got the better of Meringue. Well whoever pumped him full of metal certainly meant business. There wasna one bullet left in the cylinder! Sugar Meringue: And how do you know that? I was listenin to the inspector, wee lassie! Maybe you all should, if you wanna keep yer mug out of jail! Bottles Cologne: Okay Mr Wise Guy. If you were listening so hard, how come you didn t hear the shots? He was scratching away at his violin, no doubt! You really must tell us more about those lessons, Al! Cont. 7 8

6 Al Cologne - Second Round Questions you should ask: Ask Jock why he didn t ask for Al s help to pay his debts. Ask Sugar whether she argued with Meringue today. Information you should reveal about yourself only when asked. You keep your machine gun in a violin case. May gets quite jittery when you go out on a job, so you ve told her you are learning the violin to keep her happy. You actually went to Mrs Roody s at 7 pm. Scripted Dialogue Round 3 Bottles Cologne: Why was Meringue wearing Al s coat? I don t know! I didn t loan it to him. Well somebody must have. It wasn t me, if that s what you re thinking! Och, I m nay thinkin anything ma am. I m nay paid ta think. Let s not get hung up on the coat. The schmuck took it. So what? The violin case is not yours. All of the Chicago Outfit carry their guns in violin cases to avoid detection from the law. You still have yours. So what? It cost me a fortune at Sears Roebuck! Al, how could you be so careless? Do not read further until instructed by your host. Sugar Meringue: Well I want to know more about the hip flask. And the dry-cleaning receipt. Sugar Meringue: Aw, don t be dumb! What s so important about a dry-cleaning Receipt? The hip flask contained arsenic! Can ya no see? Someone tried ta drug Meringue! Bottles Cologne: But it was in Al s coat. Cont. 9 10

7 There ain t no question how he died. He was shot! But maybe it weren t a fair fight. Look. I can clear this up. I put the hip flask in Al s coat. Sugar Meringue: You tried to drug your own husband? No! I filled his flask with cough mixture. Potter s Efficacious Cough Linctus to be precise. It contains traces of arsenic but only enough to make a man drowsy. But why? Bottles Cologne: Al has a delicate constitution. Really? Did you put a packet of lozenges in his other pocket? Al Cologne - Third Round Questions you should ask: Ask May whether she told Al about Meringue s planned raid on the Rexington. Ask Jock whether he was in the alleyway this evening. Information you should reveal about yourself only when asked. You were on a job tonight. You planned to gun down Meringue and took Jock McBurn with you. It was a real cold night though, so you went inside the Rexington to get a coat. By the time you got back out, the gunfight was over. You have no idea how Meringue got hold of your coat. You were wearing it when you went to Mrs Roody s, but her place was so hot, you took it off. Guess you must have left it behind. Do not read further until instructed by your host. Ha! Perhaps you d better stay at home next time Al, in case you get a wee chest infection! 11 12
