WHAT S NEW WITH HERITAGEQUEST ONLINE?
New ProQuest-Ancestry Partnership Ancestry is the world's largest online family history resource with 2.7 million paying subscribers across all its websites. Awarded the 2015 Best for Genealogy Reference Database in the November 2014 edition of Library Journal. ProQuest has been the distributor of Ancestry Library Edition since On June 27, 2014, Ancestry and ProQuest announced an expanded partnership and distribution agreement which creates broader and deeper opportunities to deliver premier genealogy resources to libraries.
Agenda New features of HeritageQuest Online New additions to collections 7 Step Genealogy Research Process (PDF) Live Demonstration 5
What is the New HQO? The new HQO was released on March 4, 2015 For the initial launch, the new HQO contains the same six datasets as found in the product today. There have been additional or expanded content collections added since then. All content will be provided and hosted by Ancestry, except for the PERSI Archive and U.S. Serial Set. The product will have a more modern user interface as it is moved to the Ancestry platform.
What is the New HQO? Just like the current HQO, cross-searching of the individual databases is not possible due to the disparate metadata and schemas. Most original documents are now 256 greyscale or color images, instead of bi-tonal. The all-new image viewer for HQO is more powerful, easier to use, and users can send images to home. The product retains American Disabilities Act Section 508 compliance.
What is the New HQO? We are using the same authentication methods that are currently used, including: o Static IP address o Referring URL o Barcode o Embedded username/password
What is the New HQO? We are using the same usage reporting system that s currently available. However, there will be some changes to the reports themselves. We have retained the historical HQO statistics; no usage data will be lost. Customer Field Trainers have updated and revised the HQO LibGuide, 2-minute videos, and other training materials. There are live, online training (webinars) available to library staff on our public schedule.
NEW Features & Tools Census, Books & Directories, Revolutionary War, & Freedman s Bank NEW: Search Page NEW: Results Page NEW: Images load in Ancestry.com s Interactive Image Viewer 10
Key Changes - Census HQO gains Ancestry s complete U.S. Federal Census, including every-name indexes and greyscale/color images. Additional census records are included: o U.S. Territories and Military & Naval Forces Schedules o U.S. Indian Census Rolls, o Mortality Schedules o 1880 Schedules of Defective, Dependent and Delinquent Classes o Selected U.S. Federal Non-Population Schedules,
Key Changes - Census Ancestry created the majority of the census name indexes, and they are continually being improved. The new HQO Census uses basically the same interface as Ancestry Library Edition, and gains industry-standard features such as SOUNDEX, wildcard searching, and more. Users can choose between the basic or advanced image viewer depending upon their needs. No special plug-in is required.
NEW Content - U.S. Federal Census Data NEW: All names indexed on each page of every census year NEW: Additional schedules and special censuses are now included, such as: Selected Non-population schedules, Mortality schedules, Indian Census,
Key Changes Genealogy Books The collection has grown to over 48,000 full-text genealogy and local histories, city directories and other publications. 20,000 city directories were added! HQO Books gain an all-new user interface and search engine, including industry-standard thumbnail images and hit highlighting.
NEW Content - Genealogy & Local History Books Now over 48,000 books, including nearly 10,000 family histories, 13,000+ local histories, and 20,000 NEW city directories added in February
Key Changes - Revolutionary War HQO gains the complete NARA M804 Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Applications digitized from 2,670 microfilm rolls. It is an every-name index of both pensioners and applicants. It has all of the pension applications from NARA, regards of their page count and genealogical value.
NEW Content - Revolutionary War Era Records Complete file of NARA Series M804 are included: Separated into Selected Records and Non-Selected Records ; indicated in-file by cover sheets Selected Records are those that NARA chose to bring forward in the file because of their relevance to genealogical research. Non-Selected Records are the remaining documents in the file. 17
Key Changes - Freedman s Bank Ancestry s version of the Freedman s Bank Records will be used, including the user interface and search engine. As a result, the transcription feature will no longer be available. Researchers will be able to more easily see the individual bank record in the context of the full register page.
PERSI Archive and the U.S. Serial Set Seen on the Home page, but re-direct to the legacy HeritageQuest Online search interface. The search options and display of images remain the same. 19
PERSI Archive & U.S. Serial Set There will be no significant changes to the PERSI Archive user interface or search engine. For the initial launch, there will be no significant changes to the U.S. Serial Set user interface or search engine. However, we expect to move the Serial Set to the Ancestry platform in the near future.
The Persi Archive PERSI: A Treasure Trove of Clues 21
What is PERSI? Covers national, regional, state, local and some international periodicals. Contains full subject indexing of key state history journals for each state in the U.S. Provides coverage for the most respected journals in the genealogy field. Search for people, places, how-to articles, and publications. 22
What s Indexed in PERSI? A Variety of Publications Genealogical Society Publications Historical Society Publications Surname Publications Ethnic Society Publications Special Interest Publications Online Publications 23
What s NOT Indexed in PERSI? Every Detail Author names or page numbers Every name found in every article. (The main family being researched is listed, but individuals mentioned in passing will not appear in PERSI.) Family group sheets, pedigree charts, queries Society officers, membership lists, meeting notices Book and computer software reviews 24
Searching in PERSI Helpful Hints! The PERSI search engine limits the results list to 1,000 viewable records. Use keywords, wildcards and Boolean operators to help narrow the search if the initial results are greater than 1,000. John Smith or Smith, John : The Search People screen is for surname only. Do not include given names. Smith + Coat of Arms : Commas, plus signs and slashes are not supported. Sm*th : Stemming is not supported in the middle of a word. Use a? instead of an *. 25
How and Where to Locate a Copy of the Article Library Resources Allen County Public Library (ACPL) has all the periodicals. Photocopies of up to six articles may be obtained from ACPL by completing and mailing the request form that s in HQO. There is a $7.50 minimum fee +.20 per sheet. The Known Repository listing in PERSI is only for major U.S. repositories based upon a survey conducted by ACPL many years ago. Major libraries such as the Library of Congress and the LDS Church s Family History Library in Salt Lake City can be good sources for many of the articles and publications. 26
Where to Locate a Copy Cyndi s List Cyndi s List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet has many links to the websites of active historical and genealogical organizations. Many publications found in PERSI come from these organizations. Go to: 27
NEW Search Pages = NEW Search Criteria Use truncation / wildcard symbols (see below) or the Exact match option that appears beneath each field when you begin typing.* Boolean and proximity operators (AND, OR, AND NOT, NEAR, etc.) are not permitted.* Truncation symbols (*) and wildcard symbols (?) are permitted to replace letters (e.g., Eli?abeth) or truncate a name or term to search for variant forms (e.g., Sam*).* Add Life Events or Family Members names to increase the precision of your search.* Keyword searching can also add focus to your search. Use double quotes when phrase searching (e.g., civil rights ).* *Same behaviour as Ancestry Library Edition 28

NEW Research Aids Page All new tips and tricks from the Ancestry.com experts and expert genealogists and historians worldwide! No matter your experience level, no matter your research goals, we ve got advice and helpful information available. All documents are downloadable PDFs. 30
Key Changes Census Maps Map Guide to the U.S. Federal Census has moved to the new Maps section as a stand-alone, interactive resource. Awareness and usage of this valuable resource should increase significantly. The Census Book by William Dollarhide has also moved to the Maps section, where its usage should increase as well.
